The song was originally composed by Shlomo Carlebach in 1970 during the Leningrad trials when a group of 14 soviet Jews were given harsh sentences, some to death when they attempted to hijack and land a plane in Sweden with the goalnof emigrating tobIsrael and bring the plight of soviet Jewry to the world. After a public outcry around the world the Russian government blinked and spared them from death and commuted the sentences. Singer Yitzchok Benarza released the niggun it again with a close version to the original, as Jewish hostages are held captive in Gaza
