While there, he was approached by a woman, who's been a baalas teshuvah for about a decade now. She said, “Please help me, I have no one in the world to assist me.” She related her story, which, reportedly, has since been confirmed independently.

Recap of BOE Meeting Board Votes on Conditional Budget (Video)

Watch Video below and recap by Lakewood News Network
There was a  proposal asking the voters to approve after school programs for a million and a half dollars and another million for non public related services they are not considered mandated programs and therefore will be put up to a vote by the public for $2.5 million in November at the general election. It approved it will raise annual taxes by $150 and  become permanent and part  of the yearly school budget raising taxes every year to cover it. If its rejected it will never be able to put back into the budget.

LNN  recap on the BOE Meeting:
Lakewood's Board of Education last night held a meeting in which they discussed the state legislature's budget, which slashes $30 million in state aid that the district was informed in March by the state DOE they would receive. Business Administrator Robert Finger told the board that, unless the board approves their own budget now, as of July 1 (the new school year), the school district legally can't operate.

The board approved a budget raising the average tax payers bill $150 annually, but with the condition that the budget is null and void if the state does in fact provide the $30 million.

Lakewood BOE Sells District Buses, Recoups some of the money

Last night at the BOE Meeting it was announced that the district sold its fleet of buses for $1,121,185 at auction. The profits from the sale will go into a capital reserve surplus money for future expenses and toward any deficit in the budget.
Officials did not disclose how much the township initially spent to purchase the buses but after an audit it actually cost the township an additional $3 million per year for 3 years by purchasing busies instead of outsourcing it.
It was back in 2016 that the Lakewood BOE under the state monitor decided to purchase its own bus fleet to transport the students to school. At the time they said it was going to be a savings of $3 Million dollars a year. Fast forward 2 years and now it appears that it ended up costing an additional $3 Million dollars a year. The board hired  private auditors that determined they could save about  $8 million over 3 years by outsourcing.  So the board voted to outsource the transportation to private companies for the next 3 years, and sell its fleet of buses.

Dems Pass Budget without Lkwd Funding, Singer Supports

The Democratic-controlled Legislature passed a $38.7 billion state budget in defiance of Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who is expected to counter by slashing spending added by lawmakers. The bill was passed with Republican support including State senator Bob Singer of the 30th district that includes Lakewood. This version of the budget strips $30 million in state aid that was initially put in for the Lakewood school district. Seven Republican state senators

Camp Before and After Camp

The girls schools have ended for the year some will be open for another week. Day camps in Lakewood are first starting July 1.  In order to lessen the free time when camp ends and schools begin in September the day camps agreed to start a bit later to shorten the extra days before the school year. A good idea to fix a yearly problem if too much time lapse from when camps end and the new school year.
Not all schools were on board to finish the year later as some are ending a full week earlier thus necessitating a camp before camp and camp after camp. If there was uniformity across the board there wont be a need to have day camp 3 times, parents wont have to shell out more money or take off from work.

Sweeny: Funding for Lakewood Schools still a Possibility

Senate president Stephen Sweeney,  suggested the additional funding for Lakewood schools was still a possibility, but that he wanted more information from the Department of Education about why Lakewood needed the money. App reports there was no conversation with the legislature when the $30 million was initialy thrown into the budget.

A spokeswoman for the governor reiterated the additional funding was necessary to provide stability in the district. "The governor remains committed to working with the Legislature to address the needs of our school districts, but simply withdrawing much needed support is not the answer to the challenges present in Lakewood," press secretary Alyana Alfaro said in a statement. Officials credited Lakewood High School math teacher and lawyer Arthur Lang, who has spent years in a legal battle arguing the funding formula doesn't work in Lakewood. The  funding was to help cover transportation and special education costs  and this funded the LSTA for another year and for provisional stabilization aid.

Yesterday the Legislature stripped this  $30 million funding from the budget as democrats and the Governor battle it out in Trenton. Nothing id final yet and Gov. Murphy huinted he may still veto the proposed budget which can force a govt shutdown.

Today the Lakewood School District has filed an emergency motion (see below) to stop the cuts according to reports. Board Attorney Michael Inzelbuch filed a initial request for emergent releif with judge Susan Scarola.
The Lakewood. School district does not have a approved budget ad it awaits word from the NJ DOE. Read. Full motion below

Letter By Rav Shmuel Kamenetzky on Actions of Anti Vaxxers in Albany

Posted on Yated Ne'eman Twitter page:

A letter sent in this morning to the Yated by Rav Shmuel Kamenetzky condemning "in the strongest of terms" the behavior of anti-vaxxers at last week's vote in Albany.

"The language used and the gestures performed by these individuals are disgraceful and shameful. No matter what their position is on the issue at hand, there is never a justification for such conduct in any forum, let alone in the state capitol in public view."

"We have a responsibility to be a light onto the nations behavior of this nature is not only repugnant and antithetical to that responsibility, but serves to create a chilul hashem b'rabim, a public desecration of the name of G-d."

Agudah Statement After NYS pushes back Eliminating Religious Exemption for Vaccinations

Agudath Israel of America has previously described that, with a measles vaccination rate in NY Orthodox Jewish schools of 96%, vaccination is our “clear societal norm” and that “it is imperative to build on the Orthodox Jewish community’s already high vaccination rate.” It has also decried an anti-vaccination rally held amidst the outbreak, and the inflammatory and senseless musings shared therein.

Agudath Israel has proactively organized multiple, free vaccination clinics in Borough Park, Flatbush, and Williamsburg; placed full page educational advertisements in community magazines and newspapers; and partnered with the NYS Department of Health and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to disseminate critical information to schools and parents describing best steps to prevent this disease. Our stance and actions on this issue have been clear.

Truck Driver's Account as He Drove through Lakewood

A Truck driver was dispached  to Lakewood this past weekend of Shavuos at a company terminal and he posted this account on Facebook.

I am rarely dispatched to our Lakewood terminal but drove through the town on Saturday close to sunset, i.e., the end of the Sabbath, and saw perhaps over a hundred Orthodox Jews of both sexes and of all ages in their orthodox Jewish garb. All the men and boys were wearing black suits, white shirts, thin black ties, black hats and black shoes. The women and girls were wearing below-the-knee length black dresses with long sleeves and black shoes. They had long, thick dark hair and I don't recall head coverings. All were walking along the sidewalks or waiting to cross at intersections as I rolled past in my tractor-trailer rig.~ I was filled with awe because it was such an unusual scene for me. I was also filled with respect and appreciation. It reminded me of scenes of the Amish. And I was filled with grave concern for their safety. Anyone who pays attention to the news knows that there are unfortunately in our society sick Nazi-like persons who hate and want to kill Jews and their ilk is demonstrably on the rise.
In seeing so many Orthodox Jews walking about peacefully and happily, I wished to see an obvious police presence, but saw none. When I got home, I googled "the Jewish Community of Lakewood, NJ." I learned that there is a school there for Orthodox Jews as large in enrollment as the College of New Jersey. Its students come from all corners of the globe to attend.

Solution to Remind Parents of Kid in Back seat of Car

Lakewood resident Mr. Yisrael Kleinman made bands to remind parents of kids in the back seat of a vehicle and is distributing them free of charge.
Babyinthecar.com While in some cases it is due to negligence, in most cases it is not. Rather we are all prone to falling into the trap of routine. Once our mind has started a familiar routine, it is very unlikely for it to reset and notice anything else. For parents of young babies, this happens when we are on our way to drop off the baby, get distracted, forget the baby for a moment, and then launch into a common routine like driving to work or driving home. Once you’re in that routine track, the chances of slipping out of it are low. The consequences however can be deadly.

Hamodia article Harav Nosson Kamenetzky ZT"L

Hamodia.com - Harav Nosson Kamenetzky, zt”l, was niftar at his home in Yerushalayim this past
Friday evening, Erev Shavuos. Rav Nosson, the son of Hagaon Harav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, had been hospitalized frequently during the past few months.

Born 89 years ago in Europe in the town Tzitevyan, where his illustrious father served as Rav, he was named after Rav Yaakov’s Rebbi, Harav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt”l, known as der alter fuhn Slabodka. Rav Yaakov once remarked that he had a personal shitah of not giving a child two names, and he felt vindicated when he could not add the name Tzvi to his son, since his own father in law, the mashgiach of Slobodka Rav Ber Hirsh Heller, zt”l, was still alive, and he would not name his child with the name of a living grandparent.

TR Councilman asked to Resign, Planning Board member Resigns

See  interview on Greater Lakewood
A Toms River Councilman and a Republican nominee for mayor was asked to resign while a planning board member filed her resignation. Toms River Council President George Wittmann Jr. and five other members of the council voted to censure Daniel Rodrick and urge his resignation from the council. The reasoning behind the council's decision is due to "Rodrick's "bigoted conduct" during the recent Republican mayoral campaign that shows his "unfitness for elected office," according to the other six members of the Township Council," according to the Asbury Park Press Report. A Campaigne mailer said "Mo Hill Gets Big Endorsement," featuring a photo of a smiling Hill speaking to Scott Gartner, an Orthodox Jewish resident of Toms River's North Dover section who is Hill's neighbor. Rodrick's campaign promoted what he presented as facts about Hill and Coronato:

"I resent the notion that I'm someone bigoted," Rodrick said. "I've never written anything bigoted or said anything bigoted."

Meanwhile, Toms River Planning Board Member Heather Barone who was also on the primary

CNN: Anti- Vaxxers Target Ultra Orthodox community

CNN- Health authorities in New York say they've faced formidable challenges to quell the current outbreak: anti-vaxers who specifically targeted the state's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, bombarding them with lies that vaccines cause autism.
When the anti-vaxers targeted the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, they knew exactly what they were doing. To help plant fear directly into mothers' hearts, their publications contained religious references and include illustrations of mothers and children wearing clothes typical of religious Jews.
New York state countered these booklets with posters in Yiddish -- but botched the translation so badly that parts of it are incomprehensible. the state health department has worked extensively with rabbis, community leaders, and health care professionals in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community to get the message out that measles can be dangerous and vaccines are safe.
Some religious Jewish women in New York think health officials missed a group: mothers.

Bill to Extend LSTA Consortium to Ocean County

Assemblyman David W. Wolfe, R-Ocean, introduced a bill that  "Establishes three-year nonpublic school pupil transportation pilot program in Ocean County to provide funding to county consortium of nonpublic schools that will assume responsibility for mandated nonpublic school busing".
The bill will renew the LSTA consortium for another 3 years but also extend it county wide to neighboring school districts in Ocean county such as Jackson and Toms River. It also calls for NJ Dept of Education to fund the consortium instead of  local , Wolf told the APP "I introduced the bill because I really want to get a discussion going about the whole concept of the consortium," .

Currently the LSTA secured funded for another year in the NJ Budget, this bill will extend it for 3 years, and if approved will take effect immediately. Its not clear if this will gain traction though.

Today: Primary Election Day Show Hakoras Hatov

Lakewood: Committeeman R' Isaac Akerman is running uncontested on the Republican Ticket. Last year the incumbent committeemen also ran  uncontested and the Vaad and Igud wrote strong letters of support as Hakoras Hatov to our elected officials asking everyone to go vote.
This year too let us show our Hakoras hatov to R' Isaac Akerman for all he's done for Lakewood  throughout the years as a public servant, with Mesiras Nefesh and distinction. Reb Isaac has served close to a decade on the township committee and  stands out for his accessibility, honesty and the sincere, humble manner in which he relates to each individual constituent. Guided by Daas Torah at every juncture with an achrayus for the klal, take a few minutes to vote for Reb Issac in appreciation and support to continue working on our behalf. R' Moshe Raitzik is running uncontested on the Democratic ticket. You can only vote for the affiliated party you are registered as, Independents can declare affiliation to either party at the polls.

Charrette Institue Release Assesment on Lakewood

The national Charrette institute sought by Lakewood neighbors released its report findings.
APP reports Back in February  professional mediators came to Lakewood and interviewed residents, community and political leaders to hear from them what is creating discord among township residents. Gedolei E"Y Dedicate Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan as a Yom Tefilla for the Dangers of Technology

Hamodia- In a joint kol korei, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisrael, the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Degel HaTorah, and the Moetzes Chachmei HaTorah of Shas have dedicated Monday, Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan, as a day of tefillah and hisorerus in response to the ever-growing spiritual dangers of the misuse of technology.

The Gedolim state that although there is a great hisorerus among Torah Jews to take all necessary measures in response to this grave spiritual treat, the shattered cry of the relatives of those who have fallen victim to this danger — men and women of all ages — are still being heard, and we are obligated to plead to Hashem about this grave nisayon.

The kol koreh points out that it is known that Erev Rosh Chodesh — and Erev Rosh Chodesh Sivan in particular – is a most propitious time to be mispallel that our children and descendants should go in the ways of Hashem, and urged that pirkei Tehillim be recited in public, every kehillah according to their own customs.
