Halacha: Eating the First Nght Sukkos When It's Raining

By Rav Doniel Nuustadt shlita Rav Pine River Village Lakewood
See PDF Here

Question: Are we required to eat a k’zayis of bread in the succah when it is raining?

Discussion: There are several disputes among the poskim concerning the obligation to eat in the succah on the first night of Succos if it is raining. The following points are debated:

If rain is falling, is one obligated to eat in the succah or not?
If it is raining, is one obligated to wait and see if the rain will stop so that he can eat in a dry succah?
If one does eat in the succah while it is raining, can a blessing be recited?
If a person ate in the succah while it was raining and then the rain stopped, is he required to eat in the succah again?
If a person ate in the succah while it was raining and then went to sleep, is he obligated to get out of bed to eat again once the rain has stopped?
Since there are various opinions on all of these issues, the following is a summary of the majority view[30] and the accepted practice:
If it is raining steadily and there is a reliable weather forecast for rain all night, one should make Kiddush [with shehecheyanu] and eat a k’zayis [or slightly more than a k’beitzah] in the succah. No blessing over the succah is recited. The rest of the meal is eaten in the house.[32]
If (as is often the case) there is no reliable weather forecast and there is a possibility that the rain will stop, e.g., it is drizzling or it is raining off and on, it is proper to wait an hour or two for the rain to subside.[33] The poskim agree, however, that if the delay will disturb the dignity and pleasure of the Yom Tov, or if the family is hungry and/or tired, there is no obligation to wait.
If the rain stops while the meal is being eaten in the house or even after the meal is finished, one is obligated to go to the succah, recite leishev basuccah, and eat at least slightly more than a beitzah[34] of bread. Even if the rain stops after midnight, that amount of bread must be eaten in the succah. If one has already gone to bed and then the rain stops, there is no obligation to get out of bed in order to eat in the succah.[35]

Erev sukkos, a Busy day for Men

(Repost
Submitted via comment)
Talk about Erev Pesach the pressure of getting ready for the Seder, making sure there is no chometz, turning over the kitchen, cooking the zeroa, making charoses etc. Men usually have easy chores when it comes to Erev Pesach its the Nashim tzidkaniyos that are the ones knocked out when we sit by the seder.

Its on Erev Sukkos when rolls are reversed that the men get to feel a bit what it is for the women on Erev Pesach. Talk about the stress of getting the sukkah up, making sure its sturdy, adding 2 new panels, last minute runs to the local hardware store- a screw and bolt here, a light fixture, oops need to run back for an adapter since its 3 prongs, Setting the shabbos clock, putting up the decorations. Then its back to the store for another 6x4 mat for the schach and a fold-able cot for the son in law who sleeps in the sukkah.

Hourly Forecast for Lakewood First Night Sukkos

Flood advisory From midnight  tonight through late Friday night. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.  Periods of heavy rain are likely beginning late tonight, continuing through Friday Night. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts of 6 inches or more possible.

Hourly forecast for tomorrow evening

What To Do If It Rains The First Night of Sukkos

The weather forecast for the first night of Sukkos this year is not looking promising for the Lakewood area with rain falling all day and late into the wee hours of the morning. 5 years ago in 2018 it rained the first night yuntiff.

As people came home from shul the question was how long to wait before starting the meal. Do you hold out to chatzos hoping the weather will let up? what about the kids how late can they stay up?  Can you make a bracha of leishev ba’sukka in this weather?  Those with a shlock could unroll it and quickly make kiddush before the rain seeeps in.

For reference:

Some  Rabbonim announced in shul not to wait more than an hour, others held out longer for a small break in the weather enough to make kiddush hamotzie and  start the meal.

Chazal say its a סימן קללה if it rains on sukkos some say it is only referring to the first night and only applies to Eretz Yisrael. The piskei Teshuva brings down from the bikurei yaakov that according to the Rama that one can eat in the rain on the first night it is not considered a סימן קללה, to the contrary one gets more schar fr it.

For all halachick matters consult with your LOR.

Election filing documents obtained by FAA News reveal that Rabbi Schnall's campaign office is... Township Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein's office! This is extremely revealing as to any agendas as Mr. Lichtenstein is the one pushing for all the overdevelopment - which causes additional traffic-congestion and increased taxes - in Lakewood. Clearly, a vote for Avi Schnall is a vote for Meir Lichtenstein's unabated overdevelopment agenda. Rabbi Schnall is campaigning on catchy slogans of "safer streets and more funding for school bussing." The campaign is specifically highlighting that our state owned roads need to be made safer.  Curiously, "safer streets advocate" Rabbi Schnall has not once been seen advocating at the township boards for any safety at all. - Unsustainable Lakewood school distric needs to borrow an additional $93 million to stay afloat it would be on top of the $165 million the district has borrowed since 2014. It has only managed to pay back $42 million. That would bring the district’s state debt to more than $198 million, an amount unlikely to be repaid anytime soon App reports. Lakewood currently has eight times as many students in private school, 42,307, as public school, 5,164. Even though Lakewood says it can’t pay its bills without a loan,....Just last month, the district approved a $22,000 raise for its superintendent and its board attorney earns more than $800,000 per year, among the highest in the state. The auditor review stated that Lakewood’s special education costs are among the highest in New Jersey, noting that 33.4% of students are classified “special education,” the second highest in the state and more than twice the state average of 15.9%. As presented in the 2023-24 district’s budget, Lakewood is set to spend $138 million on private school-related expenses. Those include $27 million for private school transportation; $55 million on resources for private schools such as security and technologies; and $53 million in private special education tuition. These expenses are state-mandated. See full report at Appm

TAG Update on Whatsapp Channels

The following statement was sent out by TAG regarding the release of WhatsApp channels feature.

Dear Fellow Community Member,

As you probably have heard, WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature called Channels. With the advent of Channels, WhatsApp has changed from being predominantly a messaging app to a social media app similar to many others.

Coming in the middle of the Yemei HaDin, this is a stark reminder of how any app can change overnight. An app which was considered relatively safe by many people has suddenly become highly problematic.

Baruch Hashem, requests are coming into our offices worldwide from individuals and businesses alike to block WhatsApp entirely since Channels were released. Mi K’Amcha Yisrael!

For those who will continue to use WhatsApp:

TAG International has been aware of this issue for a while and has been working proactively to create viable solutions for this latest threat. Currently, MB Smart and Netspark are able to block this feature for Android users. Gentech and Techloq are working on a block as well. MB Smart also has a partial fix for iOS. Please contact your local TAG center to find out more.

Please note: These solutions are being tweaked

To Whom Do We Give Tzedakah and Who Comes Before Whom?

Aseres Yemei Teshhuva between  Rosh hashana and yom kippur when many tzedaka requests are made by  Mosdos, Yeshivos individuals and organizations asking for donations as klal yisrael is in a giving mode of tzedaka during this time. we are bombarded by Tzedaka letters in the mail, robo calls, telemarketers soliciting donations, emails, a meshulach knocking at your door or approaching you in shul. Some have family obligations to support a relative.
If one can afford to give to all that would be wonderful, however not everyone is capable of that.  The question is is whom do I have to give

According to Halacha there are priorities in who to give tzedaka to first. Please discuss this with your Local Rabbi as there are differences of opinions.

Eating Pas Yisrael During Aseres Yemei Teshuva

Eating Pas Yisrael During Aseres Yemei Teshuva
By Rabbi Doniel Neustadt shlita  (Torah.org)
As part of their overall strategy to guard the Jewish People from assimilating among the nations of the world, our Sages decreed against eating [kosher] bread that was baked by a non-Jew.(1) This edict was one of several which served to limit social interaction between Jews and non- Jews. Thus non-Jewish wine, bread, and certain cooked foods were all declared off-limits for the Jew.(2)

Since bread is so much more of a dietary staple than other cooked foods – indeed, the Rabbis call it chayei nefesh, the vital element of the diet – the decree against non-Jewish bread was not as widely accepted as the decrees against other cooked foods.(3) Consequently, in many communities where quality Jewish-baked bread was not easily available, it became customary to eat pas palter, which is kosher bread that is baked in non- Jewish bakeries. The rationale behind allowing pas palter is that eating bread that was baked in a non-Jewish bakery does not lead to mingling and socializing with non-Jews.(4)

- Jackson residents get letters about upcoming reevaluation of all properties in the township[ for the 2025 year. An appraisal company will be sending out assesors to visit each home and collect information in order to determine the new appraised value. It is not mandatory to allow them in your homes as you have a right to privacy,  however industry experts say there are consequences for denying the assessor a peek inside your home: a finished basement, for example, will add a higher resale value to your home than a dusty junk area. But the assessor just can't barge. You can legally deny him entry. But if he can't see the inside, he could assume you have lots of nifty upgrades, like granite counter tops, a hot tub and a home theater, even if you just have cracked linoleum floors and unpainted walls. "There is a risk that the assessment could be higher than the true market value"

WhatsApp Channels Feature challenge to Frum community

The question many are asking is this beginning of the end for the frum WhatsApp community?

What was considered a clean and safe

Messaging app for the frum community has now changed as WhatsApp shifts to be like all social media by adding a channels feature with a global search option like other apps such as telegram. Over the next few days this feature will be available to all Whatsapp users.
The company announced "we’re excited to launch WhatsApp Channels to over 150 countries and deliver a private way to receive updates that matter to you. We’re welcoming thousands of organizations, sports teams, artists, and thought leaders that people can follow, right within WhatsApp".

What is the problem?

Whatsapp used to be a clean and simple app but now it's getting disgusting with the ability to  search for and join channels with shmutz and filth. You can't as of now op out or delete this new function. Kosher phone filter companies are  facing an uphill battle trying to find a solution to block or disable the channels feature. Tech Industry are calling on users to contact whatsapp directly and letting them know how the new channels is a danger to our community. Others are suggesting leaving and going to other messaging apps such as Signal.

An article on LinkedIn by the ceo of safetelecom:

The introduction of this feature presents a significant challenge for the Orthodox Jewish community and communities with similar values and sensitivities. Traditionally, WhatsApp has served as a reliable platform for simple and private communication among community members, allowing them to maintain a digital space in line with their cultural and religious values.

However, the advent of "Channels" introduces an element of unpredictability and exposure to potentially offensive content. This feature enables unknown individuals and entities to broadcast messages and content to a wider audience, regardless of personal connections or shared contact numbers. As a result, community members may find themselves inadvertently exposed to content that contradicts their traditional values and religious principles.

Furthermore, parents within these communities may be concerned about the impact of this exposure on their children, whom they are diligently raising with a strong adherence to their cultural and religious values. The ability for children to easily access and encounter undesirable content on WhatsApp Channels is a genuine concern for parents striving to provide a safe and culturally appropriate digital environment for their families.

Safetelecom says out they are working on a solutuon that has the ability to block key functionalities related to WhatsApp Channels on select Pixel devices. This update will enable users to: Block Channel Discovery: Prevent the ability to search for new channels, ensuring a more controlled content environment.  Block Channel Viewing: Restrict access to view channel content, allowing users avoid viewing objectionable content. Block Channel Following: Limit the ability to follow channels, offering a higher degree of content control.

However there still remains no solution for most users and industry techs say any channel that is followed by an account before switching to a kosher phone may not be blocked in the future as of now.

When Rosh Hashana Falls on Shabbos, No Shofar, Could be a Good year

(א"ר יצחק, כל שנה שאין תוקעין לה בתחילתה, מריעין לה בסופה, מאי טעמא, דלא עירבב שטן" (ר"ה, טז ע"ב
Any year that we do not blow the Shofar on Rosh HaShana we will have a bad year at the end (Rosh HaShanah 16b). There are opinions that the gemara refers to a regular year where there was no shofar blowing others say it is talking about  when shabbos falls out on Rosh Hashana such as this year. The Aruch Laner, (in his Minchas Ani, Parshas Haazinu) He discovered that whenever Rosh Hashanah fell on Shabbos, that year was either a terrible or a fantastic one for Klal Yisroel. Either way, it is almost never an uneventful somewhat forgettable year.

The Fifth Guy by Hatoras Nedarim

Article in Mishpacha Magazine from 2019

Erev Rosh Hashanah is approaching, which means it’s almost time for hataras nedarim, which means that at some point near the end of Shacharis, the people around you will start mentally calculating how many people are in the minyan and if that total is divisible by four. If it’s not, it means at least one group will have an extra person, and trust me, you don’t want to be a fifth guy at hataras nedarim. You need three to serve as dayanim, along with the one who is actually seeking the hatarah: That’s four. Number five is unnecessary, which means that he’s forcing the other four to sit through one more recitation of the text and, apparently, after a two-and-half-hour Selichos and Shacharis, it’s those four minutes that will ruin the day. So as you do the math in your shul and make the same mental kabbalah as last year — to find out what nezirus Shimshon actually means before next Rosh Hashanah — here’s a story for you.

Erev Rosh Hashana video Message from R' Hershel Herskowitz candidate for township committee

A Call To Action for the safety of the Community

A Call to action for the safety of  our childrens lives for mothers and fathers for yeshiva bochurim and pedestrians.
A Lakewood resident callson the entire community to take action on the dangerous roads in Lakewood  yes it is erev Rosh Hashana but it can't  go on anymore as people get hit daily by cars ending up with broken limbs wreaking havoc on families or CV worse. The blame is on this3 in office for the last 20 years for doing nothing. Township officials keep passing blame on the state and county, he asks how many applications did they send to county and state? What about the local dangerous roads under township control with no sidewalks?
What can we do? Coming up this November the only solution is to vote out the incumbents. We cant continue having children killed and injured daily on Lakewood roads. ENOUGH!!
If you don't go out to vote then you can only blame yourselves.

The Selichos You wont Hear About

Tens of thousands in Lakewood went to selichos motzei shabbos at chatzos, men women bochurim, girls and  young boys to the traditional selichos in their local shul or yeshivos just like their parents and  grandparents but there's nothing newsworthy about it.

Previously submitted

I went to shul heard a fiery speech from the Rav, the chazzan began the traditional kadish to the tune of yomim noraim, fathers with sleepy eyed children, old and young were in the audience all asking for forgiveness as we get ready for the Yom Hadin. When it was over we went home. There were no photographers, no guitars, no organ, no cello, no musical instruments, no dancing, no entertainment, no carlebach nusach no kumzitz. It was a simple selichos recital seen in many shuls across the world the way it was done last year, and the year before, with the authentic nusach. But you wont see a video of it on the websites because its just perhaps too old fashioned or not newsworthy. Not here to take away or make light of what others do but we have become a man bites dog society.
