Acceptence Letters sent out For Girls High School In Lakewood

Acceptance letters for Lakewood girls high school were mailed out this week. Among the schools who sent letters are Oros, Bais Kayla, Shiras Devorah and others. Some girls were accepted and placed into a school  they have not applied to.  Initially the vaad recommends that girls going to 9th grade apply to 4 schools hoping to be accepted into one of them. They are hoping to avoid the yearly shame of starting school while there are still girls not accepted at all to a school or those placed in one that's suitable for them. Ther are still many girls who were not accepted and schools are waiting for girls who were accepted into multiple schools to decide thus freeing up slots for the others.

Israel Dissolves Knesset and heads to Elections

The Israeli gov't will have its first back to back elections after prime minister Netanyahu failed to form a coalition. The date for new elections is 17 Elul/ September 17 2019. The knesset voted to dissolve with a majority of 74 - 45.
Negotiations went down to the wire with charedi parties offering to compromise on the Giyus Law. Degel Hatorah faction of UTJ and the Shas party joined  together without the Agudah party by fully accepting the current Giyus law as is in an attempt to appease and form a coalition.

All proposals were rejected by Lieberman and the 21st Knesset voted to dissolve itself.
Prime minister Netanyahu lashed out at Lieberman saying he took the country twice to elections in 8 months only becsuse he wanted more mandates he is now part of the left.
MK Litzman said it was not the Giyus law that bothered lieberman he instead used it as a excuse and stirred charedi hatred to get his way.

Uneven Retail Environment in Lakewood Poses Challenges
Article from  KosherToday.com- Lakewood NJ…by KT Staff Reporters
It was Wednesday evening, the first of the three-day pre-Shabbat shopping period in this growing hub for kosher foods. Yet, while some of the large independent stores were “busy,” others weren’t leaving some in the kosher food industry to wonder why. The magnificently mega Bingo store was virtually deserted leading some to speculate that the club-like kosher store was underachieving here compared to its pilot store in Boro Park. When Bingo first opened, Kosher Today reported that some local stores lost as much as 25% of their business. Most retailers in the area believe that as time went on, it was reduced to less than half (10%-12%), particularly on the eve of major holidays like Passover.

Located on Route 70 near such stores as Costco and Home Depot, the Israeli-style super store (Bingo is affiliated with the Osher Ad chain in Israel) has not yet captivated the Lakewood market. One kosher food industry veteran speculated that the location may not be as convenient for Lakewooders as was thought. In fact, Miriam, shopping with her husband in the extremely crowded Gourmet Glatt, said: “It’s a shlep for me since I live on the other side of town.” She also said that she liked the

YERUSHALAYIM - Hamodia.com The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudas Yisrael in EY met today and agreed to a compromise on the draft law offered by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, while Yisrael Beyteynu leader Avigdor Leiberman refused to back down on his demands making new elections appear inevitable.

“This evening, invitations to personal meetings with the prime minister, as well as the announcement from the Moetzet, were released a mere 10 minutes before the evening editions were scheduled to go to print,” a press release from Yisrael Beyteynu announced. “This is seen as a multi-pronged move to lay the blame for any collapse [of coalition talks] and return to new elections on MK Leiberman and Yisrael Beyteynu.

Dressbarn Closing All Stores

Dressbarn, the women's clothing chain is closing all its stores. Ascena Retail Group announced the closure of about 650 stores late Monday, saying the "wind-down" would help the company focus on its more profitable brands. There is one store in Howell, NJ near Kohls and  one in Jackson at the premium outlets mall.

"This decision was difficult, but necessary, as the Dressbarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability in today's retail environment," Steven Taylor, the company's chief financial officer, said in a statement.

NJ AG Appeals Sentence

Prosecutors and the NJ attorney general are appealing the sentence  of Rabbi Eiseman handed by Court Judge Benjamin Bucca Judge and have asked an appeals court to review it according to a spokesman for the state Office of the Attorney General. They say the sentence deviated from state statute, which says Eisemann faced a presumptive sentence of five  to 10 years in prison for each of two second-degree convictions for money laundering and misconduct by a corporate official. Eisemann's defense lawyer, Lee Vartan, said Thursday he also will file an appeal addressing various issues that came up during trial. "Given the state’s appeal we really have no choice but to appeal as well," he said. "We'll be filing a similar notice of appeal in the coming days." read more in APP

Agudah Statement : Nonsense and Insults at a Recent Monsey Gathering

STATEMENT FROM AGUDATH ISRAEL OF AMERICA.  May 15, 2019

Nonsense and Insults at a Recent Monsey Gathering
Countless rabbinical figures and leaders, including leading rabbis in the Agudath Israel movement and doctors serving these communities, have repeatedly encouraged vaccination in the strongest possible terms.

A recent gathering in Monsey, NY, heavily promoted in Orthodox Jewish areas, featured figures in the anti-vaccination circuit, including a pediatrician who uses “cranial-sacral therapy, homeopathy, essential oils, aromatherapy, yoga, Reiki, meditation, reflexology, and mindfulness”; a television producer who has sported a large yellow star at anti-vaccination rallies; and the author of a paper in the Lancet on vaccines that the publication retracted as fraudulent. The latter lost his British medical license for unethical behavior.

NYT Reports on Anti Vaccine Event in Monsey

New York Times reports on the anti Vaccine event in Monsey, NY

MONSEY, N.Y. —(NYT) An ultra-Orthodox rabbi falsely described the measles outbreak among Jews as part of an elaborate plan concocted by Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York to deflect attention from “more serious” diseases brought by Central American migrants.

A pediatrician questioned whether Jews were being intentionally given “bad lots” of vaccines that ended up giving children a new strain of the virus. And Andrew Wakefield, the British doctor whose study linking measles vaccines with autism was widely discredited and condemned, appeared via Skype to offer an almost apocalyptic vision of a world in which vaccines were giving rise to deadlier immunization-resistant diseases. “We Hasidim have been chosen as the target,” said the rabbi, Hillel Handler. “The campaign against us has been successful.”

Yeshiva Students forced to join Mixed Battalions in IDF

Hesder inductees annexed to mixed battalions
(INN) New Phenomenon in IDF: Yeshiva student fighters attached to mixed battalions. The Tzav Echad organization reports that the IDF is ignoring the Joint Service Order promoted by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and that a clash between the army and religious soldiers has been created.

The Order obliges military authorities to ask any religious soldier (except for an officer or NCO) before being assigned if there is a reason to prevent him from serving in a gender-mixed battalion. According to the organization, senior commanders have found a way to circumvent the order and bring yeshiva students to "reinforce deployment" at the borders, where the mixed battalions operate.

The religious fighters are under the command of a female company commander, together with her entire company in a small outpost.

Forward.com- The Lakewood Yeshiva is in New Jersey, but it’s the Texas of Talmud academies. Everything is big, from festivals to real estate deals. Its airy study halls can hold hundreds of bearded men in black pants and crisp white shirts, their fringes swinging at the waist as they spend their days in prayer and study. When the yeshiva opened some 70 years ago, Lakewood’s big business was chicken farming. Today, Torah is the economic engine, and Lakewood is a boomtown fueled by the yeshiva’s scholars and their families. The school makes the entire place feel blessed — to many.

New Details of Break in Attack at Eagle Ridge

See Full Letter and details HERE on FB
Excerpts from the letter posted by GL

“I cannot and will not ignore the matter of safety for my family. The Police have not yet made an arrest in the assaults that my wife and I suffered. There is absolutely no doubt that it was a targeted attack. Shortly after my wife and I had been struck on the head, which caused us to collapse to the garage floor, the attacker confirmed my last name by saying “You’re Robison right.” He went on to thank me for my years of service in the Marine Corps. I acknowledge that my last name and the fact that I am a retired Marine is rather well known, but I have never heard of a home invader interviewing the victims.

Later in the attack I was taken to the master bedroom. While there I asked the attacker “Why are you doing this?” because he had previously (and immediately) given up the demand for money. His answer to my question was “So you don’t like duplexes in your neighborhood…Remarkably very little was stolen from the house.”

BOE Raises Lakewood Property Taxes

Lakewood residents and tax payers were hit with a double whammy tax increase last week. The Board of Ed and the township committee passed separate budgets that include tax increases. Despite all the new construction and state aid there was still a need to raise taxes. The school district in Lakewood is unique since the state does not calculate the private school students who are mandated for state services. A home valued at 500,000 will see an increase from both budgets of $400 annually.

LNN reports This past Tuesday night, Lakewood's Board of Education adopted a final annual budget totaling approximately $183 million that would raise $102.84 million from Lakewood's tax payers (with the remainder coming from state aid). The budget is still pending state approval officials say the monitor will possibly overide it because of a request for a state loan to cover special ed in an ongoing litigation)
The tax rate for 2019 will be 1.041¢ per $100 of the property's assessed value. In 2018, the tax rate was 1.012¢. This represents a 2.9% increase to the tax rate.

According to this tax rate figure, an average townhouse which is assessed at $417,900 will be assessed a tax of $4350.33, up from $4229.14 that was assessed at the 2018 rate (a $121.18 annual increase). A single family house which is assessed at $557,100 will be assessed a tax of $5,799.41, up from $5637.85 (a $167.55 annual increase)

Lakewood Township to Build New Municipal Hall & Police Headquarters

Lakewood township began the process of  Expansion of Municipal Building and Police Department. The smart growth plan in 2009 called for a new Municipal complex to be built at Cedarbridge park.
The 2017 master plan also said " given the town’s growing number of residents, a review of facility  needs for township administrative functions and police based on current and future population is prudent.
The town has reportedly  reached out to a consulting company to look into the matter and decide on either redeveloping  and expanding the current location or moving to a brand new complex at cedarbridge or other locations.
