NYC Council Proposes Fur Ban, Shtreimel May be Exempt

Hamodia.com - The New York City Council has proposed a bill that would ban on the sale of all new fur items in all five boroughs, a plan that could have foreboding ramifications for shtreimel wearers in the Orthodox community.
Democratic Councilman Stephen Levin, whose district includes much of Williamsburg, told Hamodia that though the legislation was in its early stages, members were aware of the impasse it could pose to constituencies such as his own, and were favorably disposed to creating an exemption, should it advance.

“We heard quickly about the shtreimel,” he told Hamodia. “It’s my understanding that they are an article of a religious nature, in which case I would expect them to be exempt. That’s not in the language of the bill right now, but I certainly think that it’s an issue that ought to be addressed.”

No plan to Ban Unvaccinated Children in Lakewood

NJ and Lakewood officials say they have no plans to follow Rockland county  and ban unvaccinated children from public spaces, due to a measles outbreak. New Jersey Health Commissioner Shereef Elnahal said New Jersey has no plans to follow Rockland County's measures.
“There are a number of interim steps we can take if we see a surge in the number of cases," he said according to a report in the APP.  Lakewood mayor  Ray Coles also said despite the outbreak in Lakewood officials are not considering any measures like those undertaken in Rockland County.

WOW Air shuts down leaving passengers Stranded

Bochurim returning for Bein Hazmanim.
Bloomberg - Wow Air Hf has gone out of business, stranding thousands of passengers and creating potentially huge risks for Iceland’s tiny economy and its growing reliance on tourism.

The discount carrier is the eighth European airline to have failed since the summer as margins are pinched by fluctuating fuel costs and over-capacity that’s sparked a continent-wide fare war.

Wow’s demise should bring short-term relief to local rival Icelandair Hf. Ryanair Holdings Plc, EasyJet Plc and Wizz Air Holdings Plc -- Europe’s three biggest discount airlines -- also fly to the island in the North Atlantic, whose popularity has grown exponentially in recent years thanks to television shows like Game of Thrones.

Record 6000 Families Head to Orlando for Pesach 2019

Kosher Today- Record 6000 Families Head to Orlando for Passover

Orlando…Walt Elias Disney was said to have been a creative dreamer and genius but it is unlikely that he dreamt that the city that houses his world of fantasy and the celebrated Mickey Mouse would also be the central destination for Orthodox Jews on Passover 2019. Sources tell Kosher Today that as many as 6000 families (25,000-30,000 people) will fill thousands of villas and rentals as well as hotels during the Passover holiday (evening of April 19-April 27th) in this Central Florida city. Many kosher supermarkets will be shipping truckloads of Passover foods to the vacationers. Several kosher caterers have been retained to cater Seder meals at some of the villa complexes. The Grove Kosher Market with stores in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Hollywood will deliver food for a $150 delivery fee with a minimum $950 order. Some New York kosher grocers will also be shipping kosher fare to Orlando. Travel experts say that many of the Orlando Passover vacationers either stayed home previously or were in one of the 100 hotel programs. They also say that this year’s week-long Chol Hamoed (interim period) prompted the expansion. “Just look at the airfares,” one expert said, “and you will quickly realize how demanding the route to Orlando is.

Agudah Decries Passage of NJ'S Assisted Suicide Legislation

Agudath Israel of America’s New Jersey office decried the state legislature’s passage of a bill today allowing doctors to write lethal prescriptions for terminally ill patients who say they wish to end their lives.
The state Assembly and Senate voted today to send the bill to Governor Phil Murphy for his signature. If he signs it into law, New Jersey will be the eighth state permitting “aid in dying.”

The bill would allow physicians to write prescriptions for lethal drugs for terminally ill patients who are evaluated by physicians as having less than six months left to live.

Assisted Suicide Bill Approved, Murphy says will sign it

Earlier today both the state assembly and Senate in NJ voted to approve "the medical aid in dying for the Terminally I'll Act" and governor Phill Murphy said he will sign it into law. Opponents argued there is no way for a doctor to determine when most people are going to die. Rabbonim have issued a psak calling it Shefichas Domim.

The bill contains numerous safeguards and procedures to ensure the integrity and safety of the process, including:

Ocean Township buys property to keep yeshiva away from it

Town strikes $2M deal to stop Orthodox Yeshiva, dorms.
Yeshiva Gedola N'aos Yaakov Rosh Yeshiva
הגרש"פ שוסטל שליט"א was in contract to purchase a property. The Zoning board rejected the application. In 2016 the yeshiva won a discrimination lawsuit after its application was rejected by the zoning board in 2016. The yeshiva has since settled in Lakewood. The property was now purchased by the township costing tax payers $30.

NJ.com-Ocean township council voted 5-0 to  close on a deal to buy the property for $2 million, thus keeping it out of the hands of the Lakewood-based yeshiva and rabbi who had sought to buy the site and use it as a boarding school.

Ocean Township’s protracted battle to block a Yeshiva and dorm for 96 college-age students had nothing to do with concerns about nearby Lakewood’s expanding Orthodox Jewish community, the mayor said. “This wasn’t about religion,” said Mayor Christopher Siciliano, adding that Ocean itself has a large Jewish community and more synagogues than churches. “It was about preventing the overuse of a property in a residential neighborhood.”

NJ Assisted Suicide Bill Up for Vote Tomorrow

Tomorrow Monday March 25, lawmakers in both the state Senate and Assembly will decide the fate of a bill that would give terminally ill patients in New Jersey a legal right to decide how and when the die. The assembly vote is a t 1:00 pm the senate vote is at 12:00 pm.

Senator Singer's office said he will speak out on the floor against the bill. Lakewood Assemblyman Kean is expected to do the same.
Proponents claim  More protections have been added over the years to make sure patients are making the decision freely. Opponents remain unconvinced, however, that some patients won’t end their lives out of fear they are a burden to their families.

Doctors without borders setting up field Hospital in Lakewood

The international organization Doctors without borders will be coming to Lakewood to supply urgent medical care. A spokesperson said the group saw the need and felt it was the right place to come to. If so many Urgent care centers open it be an urgent situation, people have to wait a few days for doctor appointments, HMO's have dropped coverage, the local hospital has no beds left, and lacks a  maternity ward. Its a recipe for a serious humanitarian crisis that made us come, he said. Anti vaxxers will be allowed to use the services with no obligation to immunize.

Group of Kollel guys offer Trump Halachic Solution for Border Wall

A Chabura of lamdanim in Lakewood have reached out to President Trump via the Lakewood white house reporter with a solution for his beloved border wall. The Chabura is currently learning the sugya of Eiruvin and offered to build the wall using the halachic principals of Lavud and of Gud asik mechitzta. No physical barrier is needed and the only expense would be for some rolls of fishing string. Instead of metal or concrete one can place a few  poles on the ground and the wall from below is considered a pre-established "wall" to continue upwards .

The president reacted with skepticism and called it a FAKE WALL, he asked if this is coming from Chuck Schumer. He reached out to his Jewish son in law who had a yeshiva education  and well versed in complex halachic issues (such as  Pikuach nefesh on shabbos, Stam Yeynum) for his opinion. The Eidim replied that its a good solution since illegals don't bring goats that would render it pasul if they pass through.  The president shot back "what does my son in law know hes an am haaretz" forget the  Spanish Goat what about the illegal themselves they can get through the wall?
He said  I need a big beautiful wall that is a physical barrier and can't be breached,  just like  the walled city of shushan Habirah.

Senator chuck Shumer  was notified about the proposal.  This wall is good and like my last name is a good shomer  "if its good for eiruvin and sukkah its definitely good for Me and Mexico" he said.
President Trump  insisted he will ask his friend Bibi if such a wall is approved by the big Rabbis in Israel, I want nothing less than the great wall of China! not a fake news wall that is technically kosher i want it Glatt Kosher! just Like the party of King Achashveirosh.

Neighborhood In Uproar as Organization’s Parlor Meeting Cut The Carving Station!

Theonionkichel.com -Residents of the development community "Forest Something" were in for a big surprise when they arrived at a neighborhood parlor meeting last night. On the table where the carving station was supposed to have been – there was only pre-sliced meat.

"It’s a very big deal when people put down their phones and go support an organization, and to have pre-sliced meat is a real slap in the face", said a prominent neighborhood spokesperson. "If an organization cannot spend the extra few thousand dollars to have someone slice the meat front of us while we wait on line, then that is not an organization that I want to give my tzedakah to".

Even young people were quick to pile on. A Cleveland resident who is studying in a yeshiva a few miles south of Forest Something told reporters that "I was extremely let down by the pre-cut brisket tonight. When you take the time to hitch to a parlor meeting for supper, you have certain expectations, and those expectations were definitely not met last night". This could have long-term effects on the organization. This bocher also told reporters that he spoke to a lot of his friends and while they are not going as far as to say that they will boycott the parlor meeting being held for this organization tonight in the development across the street, or tomorrow night in the neighborhood down the block, they may choose instead to go the barbecue event being held by a yeshiva that promises to not cut any corners.

Judge Rules on Eagle Ridge

TBL on Twitter - On Friday Judge Ford ruled to allow the April 2018 ruling to stand leaving the status quo which allows Eagle Ridge to stay alive. Incredibly - her reasoning was based on the fact that the Township committee (by way of their lawyer) ..already responded to this lawsuit in 2018 and they represented all of Lakewood What Judge Ford doesn't realize is that the Mayor and at least 2 other Township Committee members admitted in 2019 that they never knew about the lawsuit.

The Charidy Campaigns

Today is the 7th of Adar  Yartzheit of  Moshe Rabbenu, and Esther Hamalka.  There is a minhag among many especialy the Chevra Kadisha to observe a fast on this day. It is a day that has great segula for prayers to say specifically פרק כ"ב בתהילים.  But more importantly for Torah learning. Women Scammed into Giving up Money

The chesed fund- A young Lakewood woman has lost nearly every penny she had after falling prey to a scam today. At approximately 1:30 PM this afternoon, a Lakewood businessman walked into a convenience store at the intersection of Route 9 and Chestnut Street, when he saw this young woman crying bitterly. When he asked her what's wrong, she had just lost almost all her money.

The approximately 20-year-old woman, an American-Israeli, moved to Lakewood approximately four months ago. Today, she received a call on her cell from a man who threatened her with arrest by the U.S. Marshal's Office is she doesn't withdraw all her money from her account and send it to them - or it could become frozen and she would lose it.

Judge denies Religious Exemption to let Unvaccinated children back to school

With New York State facing one of its most severe measles outbreaks in decades, public health officials in a suburban community took the extraordinary step in December of banning unvaccinated students from attending school, regardless of whether they had received religious or medical exemptions for the vaccine. The parents of 42 children affected by the ban at the school, the Green Meadow Waldorf School, sued the Rockland County health department, asking a federal judge to issue an injunction to allow the children to return. On Tuesday, the request was denied.

Lakewood Schools district to receive 30 Million in aid, Tax increase proposed

A proposed tax increase to balance Lakewood school district  budget would cost an average Lakewood resident about $87 a year.  The district is also getting an additional $30 million in state aid.  School officials credit Mr. Arthur Lang a Lawyer and math teacher at the Lakewood high school  who sued the state arguing that the funding formula does not work for the uniqueness of Lakewood and is unconstitutional. The budget will be voted on in May,  see more here

Will an Amazon Retail Chain Cut Into Traditional Sales of Kosher?

Kosher Today - New York – Amazon is already into kosher, big time, many food experts say. The on-line giant already offers more than 15,000 kosher certified items on-line. Its 500 Whole Foods stores also have a very impressive array of kosher certified products. And now, says the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is planning to go into retail with its first store scheduled to open in Los Angeles this year and two other locations in early 2020. According to the report, Amazon also is in discussions to open grocery stores at shopping centers in San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.In addition, sources told the Journal that Amazon is mulling potential acquisitions of grocery retail chains with around a dozen stores. It is no secret that the retail scene has been changing with many supermarket chains reporting flat sales or declines, including such iconic brands like Kroger. One chain that seems to be thriving is the Florida-based Publix chain which reported significant gains in sales in recent months. With the uncertainty continuing with the large retailers, kosher food industry sources are certain that the landscape will change for them as well.

- The lawyer for R' Eisemann filed a motion in court yesterday  that two guilty verdicts should be overturned or his client should get a new trial. Lawyer Lee Vartan argued, the jury misunderstood the law and Eisemann should be acquitted of all charges. He also argued that his client  cannot be guilty of money laundering because the $200,000 was repaid within 12 days the money was a loan and  not theft that would constitute an underlying crime needed to sustain a money laundering conviction.

Jackson hires a RLUPIA lawyer, Agudah asks Judge to move case forward

A game of tossing around blame has begun in Jackson Township. Jacksonleaks reports:
"The hot potato has just been passed to them though. On February 26th, Jackson agreed to pay $800 per hour"

Agudath Israel, currently suing Jackson over bans on eruvs, schools, and dormitories, lobbed the first flaming spud last week with a letter blaming the township for unilaterally scuttling the results of over a year of negotiations. The letter to Judge Douglas Alpert, overseeing the case, alleges that the two sides came to an agreement in December that Jackson then ignored and discarded.

- Shkia/sunset 5:48 pm
- סוף זמן קריאת שמע  is 9:20 am
- Rosh Chosesh Adar II is Thursday and Friday of this week
- Molad for ראש חודש אדר-ב is Wednesday afternoon, 41 minutes and 16 chalakim after 12:00 pm.

Shabbos weather:
Friday night - Rain likely. Low 33F. Chance of rain 100%. Rainfall near a quarter of an inch.
Shabbos day: A few showers early with overcast skies later in the day. High 41F. Chance of rain 30%.
