We have to allow China to at the least equal our power in the Pacific (like each country gets a certain amount of ship tonnage like the Washington Treaty of 1922 or maybe firepower.) Before he died Kissinger said America has to go back to Nixon type detente. Of course since our industry is much better (and China went through perhaps three generations of a declining population and labor supply) so we will still lead for close to a century or more.
ReplyDeleteFor thousands of years it has been East against West except WWII. We will remain the leader of American capitalism (which just means freedom of enterprise with government regulation to protect the people) and China Communism (they say their people will be richer in 100 years, sound like Kruschev, same ole, but China is a historicly old civilization) and Russia is the leader of chaos as they always are. The Chinese were treated terrible in the US in the nineteenth century with the Chinese Exclusion Act, and particularly in California . So much evil there at that time. The Chinese are our natural friends and adversaries. We both believe in the bottom line. The Russians are just thugs.
So you a member for the China lobby.Got it.
DeleteChina treated the rest of the world poorly for centuries
China believe they are the Celestial kingdom that the whole rest of the world should be revolving around & kowtowing to
The US saved China twice in last century, was there any gratitude?
Huh,since when has China had any friends at all, except maybe Pakistan?
DeleteRussia & US were friendly for most of the 19th century
China lobby? How about pragmatist in foreign policy like Alfred Mahan, TR, George Kennan, Henry Kissinger. How dumb. China lobby. Who cares what you think, it is what the Chinamen think that will America has to deal with. China is now an adversary that can one day catch up. Russia will never catch up unless we allow them to retake their former rebublics and Warsaw pact. Here is a good book: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9780374714239/worldmaking Always was two shetahs, 1) Make the world like America or 2) keep a large navy to dominate the sea lanes. Stupid saying member of China lobby.
DeleteThat is the point. Together with Russia they are a challenge to American power. We have to keep them separated like Nixon and Kissinger did.
DeleteGet out of oxymoronic twisted tongue. You claim the American way has been so positive, yet you would wish us to get rid of the single most prominent feature of that: American predominance of the Pacific for the last eight decades?!
Delete"leader of American" what?
Ever worse drudgery for the domestic mass public at this rate? Vivà la revolucion!
Russia, for comparison on other hand, in it's root is still somehow closer to the fundamental source of the US than the continental asians-who you find so ok to party on with at whatever coming danger to us.
So it's being controlled by a Caudillo (albeit with nukes) with a far larger landmass than the South American counterparts who we on/off have traditionally cooperated with when it served both sides well.
& with the advantage of many European countries on between with luxurious per capita economic stats yet rather continue to con us through outsourcing of their defense to our collective shoulders.
Whole you're at it,Stop rebranding lefty dripping propaganda-the Chinese back then like other ethnic groups weren't treated as nicely as they could have been, but were they & others have been treated remarkably differently from how they were, this comfortable national edifice from which you excoriate now incessantly those who carried the burden to get us out elevated situation wouldn't be !

DeleteI knew this but the Russians were the immediate subject of the Monroe doctrine (I quote from the convenient Wikipeodia on Monroe Doctrine). "many years after the doctrine took effect, Britain, through the Royal Navy, was the sole nation enforcing it, the U.S. lacking sufficient naval capability. The . . the immediate provocation was the Russian Ukase of 1821 asserting rights to the Pacific Northwest and forbidding non-Russian ships from approaching the coast."
DeleteI think they even built forts in northern California and we did not want any Commies here.
In polling STEM-related workers
Delete76 percent of respondents believed that the United States either lost its global leadership in science and technology or is currently in the process of doing so. Three-fifths of respondents believe China will attain global science and technology dominance within five years
Keep on fiddling while N.America burns
That is exactly the point but it will take more than five years. Russia is not worth the beans. We need to stay ahead of China and not allow the Soviets to rebuild. China is our adversary not our enemy. They have replaced the Soviets in competing with us but the Soviets never had a chance. China does.
DeleteWhat kind of person replies "keep on fiddling." Pretty low class ignorant to close your remark like that. You cannot learn or become smart if you want to be a smart aleck.
Just remember, China will win if we don't play our cards right and that means to exercise our power firmly but with caution in the South China Sea and to keep Russia out of the mix. Xi said they won't catch up until 2050. I say 2100. But they can beat us next year if we abandon Europe and our other commitments because we cannot do it alone.
It is either the American/British (western) system of capitalism, individualism and rule of law, or the Chinese (eastern) system of the opposite. What we have in common is economic competition and we should embrace it. They are not the Soviets.
Gosh, I don't know what you are saying in the "oxymoronic twisted tongue" comment but I don't know why you see Russia in a positive manner. Both China and Russia are our foes, but China is a peer, Russia is just a trouble maker with hands in every criminal enterprise. Can't fight us on the field, just rot us out within by playing the new technology, internet, stealing atomic secrets, sending spies, just take a look in your history book. Russia is NOT A PEER to America. China is despite how clumsy is their spying on the US and American industry because they don't need to spy. They can compete head on. Stronger than Germany, Japan, Britain, France or any other country in coming decades. They can build up on their own, not like the Russians (although you have to give the Cosmonauts and. their program credit back in the day). China is where we have to direct our foreign policy and the more we keep the sea lanes open and free, the less chance we will ever go to war with them.
Delete"even built forts in northern California and we did not want any Commies here." Hope that that was in jest.
DeleteOld Czarist Russia were the overlords of Alaska. Which was without any demarcated southern limit.
Commies, aye? What was that, again? While Marx was still being nursed by his orthodox grandparents?
The Russians weren't even the immediate subject of the Monroe doctrine (though it was broadly inclusive). It was towards the former Spanish & Portuguese overlords of Latin America.
Mahan would have NEVER given an ounce of credence to your surrender of the Pacific.Surely at least that much would have stated re: his presidential protegee
DeleteGeorge Kennan would never have tolerated your "can't we all get along" kumbaya with such an antinomianist aggressive east asian entity.
So skip any further attempt at egregious name dropping.
So sorry Wikipedia. Even if the Ukase was the most immediate catalyst for US & Britain to join viz a viz collective North American competition,it was universally recognized that the Caribbean & S.America were it's primarily turf
Delete[FWIW the Falkland islands were still occupied less than a decade later]
Of course on all points in the 7:50 comment. Joke about Commies, which they always were and will be; Latin America was the reason but Pres. Monroe did get the Russians out. I just love that. And you know about what Tocqueville said in 1835 about our two counties controlling the world in the 20th century. Now China has to be the focus and we have to contain Russia like every administration since Monroe.
DeleteRabbi Hillel's name for tehilim is just יעקב without the משה.
ReplyDeleteהוא נקרא בשם "יעקב" אך חותם את שמו "יעקב משה" על שם אביו כמנהג יהודי בבל.
As you can tell, I am a talmid of TR and Alfred Mahan. Not Wilson or Wolfowitz, like we were going to make the whole world a democracy like us. We need to stick to the naval and air power and NEVER challenge China on the ground in Asia. We will win any war in Europe but aside from Japan, and we can thank Oppenheimer, a great American, and others, but we don't have a good track record in Asia.
ReplyDeleteAlthough overall boots on the ground in Asia would be bad policy indeed, if arguably China joins N.Korea & invaded S.Korea we should just cut our losses & throw in the towel?
DeleteRead that book I recommended if you love studying foreign policy. You will like it.
ReplyDeleteTo address predominance of the Pacific, right, it is our biggest challenge. We are the main power in the Pacific just like England was before us. But we have to have some kind of detente with China. We need another Kissinger or someone without so much blood on hands because of Cambodia (so they say, not sure myself, but I think in retrospect, yes. Still, like Columbus who is now persona non grata, Kissinger deserves our nation's highest honors.).
ReplyDeleteSure he deserves highest honors Lulei Elokei Ovi bezreinu he sold out all yiden leaving in EY in 73 . Also what he did in Chile Bolivia Argentina , Mexico etc was just the way to go Just let the white upper class in Latin America kill indiscriminately communist or not . A real Kapo bemloi muven hamilo and all for self promotion. The highest honors for Mechevraich..
DeleteSo you say that our kids should give up and go to war with China? Why can't we keep the peace through diplomacy? What would be wrong with having something like the Washington Agreement again or some kind of other arms control?
ReplyDeletePossibly.
DeleteSi vis pacem, para bellum. At least.
"Why can't we keep the peace through diplomacy?"Possibly again, but dubious. As China is far better at the long term game than the US & it's short administrations are,the odds should be stacked against.
The astute will grasp that the ongoing debate is less about Russia vs China, They are as much proxies for an intestinal debate re: America
