ReplyDeleteI read it but I am not sure about the stinking mafia TV show or West Wing. I have no idea what he is talking about and it seems that his audience is the masses rather than scholars. If you scroll down to the bottom, the man asks good questions. Yes, it we don't want Ukraine in NATO. I think that George Kennan was opposed to the expansion of NATO into the Warsaw Pact. He held that we were pushing Russia into a corner. This mistake started with Clinton and continued with Bush. Kennan was 100 years old by then but there were many experts who help of bringing the Warsaw Pact and Baltic Soviet Republics into NATO. And that probably was the cause of the war, but we are not sure, because Putin, and maybe it is inevitable, wants to rebuild the Russian empire. BTW This person in the link is not a professor, foreign policy expert, member of a think tank or the state department, but just a journalist. At any rate, my concern is not the slippery slope. It is not the Kennan/Truman containment theory. It is a reconstitution of the Soviet Union. Ukraine was their second most important republic after the Russian Federated Soviet Republic. Ukraine with Russia increases its population and industrial capacity. My vote is to keep Ukraine disunited with Russia.

ReplyDeleteIt is funny that Kennan also though it was a failure of American democracy that foreign policy can be dictated by elections. Wilson made that mistake in 1920 thinking that he could bring the League to American voters. Thankfully, Democrats and Republicans do not differ a lot on foreign policy. They might appear to differ to win points, but when they enter office to govern, they try their best to steadily steer the ship. I am concerned about this Ukraine war because it is become an election issue, which it should not, but I would be completely surprised if even Trump ultimately sucks up to Putin. The death of the league was while Wilson was still president, not when Harding was elected. Same might be true of our attempt to prevent the Soviet Union from reviving. They already pretty much have Belorussia, still launch from Kazakstan, and soon might have Ukraine's agricultural largess. They don't need the Baltic states that already joined NATA to become the same threat to America as in the 20th century. So I am not sure that the election will make a difference. We might be doomed anyway to see Russia rise again.
