Menendez, Booker Announce $323M in COVID-19 Emergency Funding to Support NJ Colleges, Students
    Sunday, April 12, 2020
NEWARK, N.J. – U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker today announced the awarding of $323,080,779 from the U.S. Department of Education (ED), with half being promptly released to support New Jersey’s students and institutions of higher education that are suffering tremendous losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The federal funding comes from the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which allocated approximately $14 billion to help colleges and universities across the country mitigate their financial losses and help students and their families struggling because of the economic downturn caused by the outbreak.
“Now more than ever, students and their families across New Jersey need our help weathering the economic storm caused by COVID-19,” said Sen. Menendez. “This funding will ensure students receive the assistance they need and that our colleges and universities can continue operating during this crisis. As Congress works on another stimulus package, I’ll continue fighting for the resources our students and institutions need to fully recover from these troubling times.”
“The coronavirus pandemic has touched nearly every aspect of New Jerseyans lives, from our health to our jobs to our colleges and universities,” said Sen. Booker. “I fought alongside Senator Menendez to ensure the economic hardships being experienced by students and our institutions of higher education are addressed so they receive the help they desperately need. This federal funding is a critical first step in supporting New Jersey’s colleges and universities, students, staff, faculty, and researchers battling this ongoing crisis.”
Earlier this week, Sen. Menendez led the state’s entire congressional delegation in calling on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to expedite the delivery of the emergency COVID-19 funding. New Jersey has the second highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the nation, with over 58,000 cases and nearly 2,200 deaths.
"“The financial aid grants through the federal CARES Act will assist tens of thousands of community college students in New Jersey with their critical food, health care, housing and other emergency needs,” said Aaron Fichtner, president of the New Jersey Council of Community Colleges. "

When are the talmidim and yungerleit getting the assistance that is due to them?

    1. Before you post comments on blogs, maybe read through the regs and see what the bill is about. First of all, BMG did not yet receive anything. Secondly, there are many many rules and restrictions on how the money can be spent and who is eligible for it. Therefore, don't assume that every talmid will be getting a big fat check.

    2. They are receiving the first half to go directly to the students. What are the rules and restrictions just give out the gelt.

    3. Please let us know about all these "REGS" It is pretty simple, the bill is for the students during the current crisis. The students should wait until this is over to get the much needed money from BMG because you say there are many "regs"???! Please stop with the spinning.. Please give the money to its intended recipients , the talmidim and yungerleit! They are struggling!

    4. Regs Shmegs. If BMG can't figure out how to help the financially strained students, they should not be in the business of taking federal grants on behalf of others. This is not any more complicated to understand than the other millions of dollars in federal grants they receive on a yearly basis. Stop the spin!

    5. They will get the funds when Yeshiva gets it but there are very strict guidelines from the government as to who is eligible and what the funds are meant to be used for. It is not a free for all....

  3. So some Republicans are trying to cover their lame response to this virus with deflection onto our governor. Shame on them!

    1. no everyone was lame now the Dem governor is using it for political purposes extending a lock down for a bad economy hoping for Trump to bail him out from the deficit that was created BEFORE the virus.

    2. This entire shut down was about overwhelming the healthcare system, There is minimal hospitalizations so why are we not opening up?

The governor says only when we have testing we can really proceed. Seems like only democrats are saying this impossible request. Why is that? Once politics are involved then we should open up the senate and have representative government as the constitution stipulates. Politics has no business in a healthcare that most people are suffering financially.
Wisconsin supreme court overruled the governor and there are no restrictions in place, lets see if there is a spike of cases...
We need to open NJ! Vote MURPHY out! Stop being sheep rise up and have your voice heard! call you state representative.

    3. Sad that this still has to be explained.
Two weeks after we reopen, we will know if it was a good idea. Opening up because hospitalizations are down is a short-sighted approach, that we have come to expect from republican ideologues who will consistently never look further than the end of their bulbous noses.

  8. LSTA is saving millions by not providing busing why are they charging parents of yeshiva students that are non mandated $150 for next year. who is watching all this tax money

    1. Lets insist saving a penny. The bus companies are getting paid and delivering food and school supplies etc. Nzybe the companies are saving money but not Lsta. Besides they still have a huge deficit ,as the 150 is not enough to cover

    2. If LSTA would stop losing people’s checks and be a little bit more organized then they’d have a lot more money.
