ReplyDeleteLakewood Needs District Representation—It’s Time for Change
ReplyDeleteLakewood has grown tremendously over the past few years, yet the way our town is governed has remained largely unchanged. While our current leadership does a good job addressing individual concerns, the reality is that in a town of over 150,000 residents, this approach is no longer enough. Without making noise, many residents find themselves without representation—their voices drowned out by the sheer size of the community.
Right now, our elected officials serve the entire town at large, but as Lakewood expands, this structure is proving inadequate. A small group of committee members, many of whom live in just a few select areas, are responsible for decisions that affect everyone. This has led to reactive governance, where those who complain the loudest get attention, while long-term planning and equal representation fall by the wayside.
It’s time for Lakewood to consider a district-based system, where representatives are elected from specific neighborhoods rather than town-wide. This would ensure that every part of town—whether it’s Coventry Square, the Oak Street area, Westgate, or any of the new developments—has a dedicated voice in local government. A system like this is already in place in other large New Jersey cities, including Jersey City, Newark, and Paterson, and it allows for fairer representation, better responsiveness, and a more structured approach to managing growth.
Switching to a ward-based Mayor-Council system wouldn’t just help fix potholes faster—it would allow each neighborhood to have a real say in infrastructure planning, zoning, traffic solutions, and other key issues that shape our town’s future. Instead of governing by crisis management, we could have leadership that plans for Lakewood’s long-term success.
This isn’t about politics; it’s about good governance. A petition is circulating to bring this issue to a public vote. If you believe that Lakewood deserves a government that truly represents all its residents, now is the time to get involved.

9 seats.5 that are ward based.the other 4 at-large.with a strong mayor-weak council system.Hatzlacha.would take around 7 years to accomplish.
DeleteWhy should they pull the ads? Why are people so afraid of seeing different opinions? Yes, our Roshei Yeshiva came out against Eretz Hakodesh and that definitly should carry great weight in our decision making. However, there are other gedolim who came out for Eretz Hakodesh. That means it's not a sure thing. Why can't people see ads for Eretz Hakodesh? Why are people so afraid of seeing opinions different than theirs? Is the next step rioting and calling anyone who thinks differently than you a Nazi?
ReplyDeleteWhich gedolim came out in support of it?
DeleteBecause of your dishonesty.
DeleteDo any of the paid trolls here reveal this little fact?
I read on Hefkervelt that Reb Eliyahu Levine is pro-voting.
DeleteThat should be enough for anyone from Lakewood. But ask him to make sure.
The billboard is spewing filth into the streets of Lakewood and its shocking that any frum establishment or mosad advertise on it
ReplyDeleteNo it’s not you and I both know it. It brings in money. There are gedolim on both sides who say what they say - I personally am not voting.
DeleteBut for bachurim to call and threaten the owner of the billboard is disgusting
We should pat $ to bring down these ads that lead people astray and are oyver lfney evir. Our town follows ONLY OUR gedolim not YU or young Israel

ReplyDeleteOur heilige town doesn't have problems with OTD, mental illness, shidduch crisis, poverty and abuse etc. No. Our biggest crisis is that money and power might be taken away from reform. Thanks for the chizuk !
R' Asher Weiss, R' Gurewitz of Gateshead, R' Fuerst from Chicago are not YU or Young Israel and they came out for voting for Eretz Hakodesh. You don't have to follow them. And it is admirable to follow your own Roshei Yeshiva. But you shouldn't be afraid to hear other opinions.
ReplyDeleteI thought the billboards are run by people who are part of the Vaad???!
ReplyDeleteWas he the brother of Reb Moishe Kahan from Denver Yeshiva?

So??? They caved, rather than stand up for basic values. If it was supposed anti-Semitic values would they suddenly cave as well? Doubtful
DeleteSo far there weren't ads showing other opinions, it was illusionary anti daas Torah propaganda.
ReplyDeleteWhy be busy taking away money from the reform, is that your only problem now?
