The law wont apply to  yeshiva bochur or avreich who is learning full tinme in yeshiva but those that are not learning full time will now be subjected to serve or volunteer in some capacity with army or civil service such as rescue organizations. 1. Ahh, South Africa that land where jews were as usual so progressive while benefiting from the country & were the primary factors in bringing down the (though admittedly unfair ) white socially conservative Gov't system. Because jews like to be with the Left side.

They now keep on suffering belated consequences.
    Take that as a WARNING

  3. The Gedolim of the past were against sanctions, not quotas. Some were against quotas, but most were not.

The question is not, "what did they do?"
The question is, "what is our best option?"

Anyone who doesn't look at it from that viewpoint, has lost his right to offer an opinion.

    1. your not so humble opinion... Harav schach didn't weigh his options at least not the options what he was offered. He said if the giyus law passes he will raise up his right hand and all the yeshiva people will leave for chutz laaretz. Famous speech look it up.

    2. Not a banana Republic? Maybe not the kind which listens, after taking tens of billions of dollars worth of munitions and then minds being told when they could or can't use the shnorred ammunition. The US does not need to punish them for not listening ,just withhold anymore help and the war will be over. Oh I forgot that ridiculous line that the US has a responsibility to their ally.... Shnorrer

    3. Ukraine received four times the amount of American aid than Israel did over the past year. Countries like Egypt and Jordan received about half the amount that Israel did. No one heard a peep from anyone about conditioning that aid. When you give out money unconditionally with one exception the one who the exception is being made for has a valid complaint. If the government started making serious conditions on receiving school aid and food stamps there would be a major outrage among the Israel haters. Particularly if they only did it for the group those Israel haters happen to belong to

    4. Rav Shach gave great speeches, but I am talking about what he did lemaaseh in the negotiations with the government.

Rav Shach was the most pragmatic person in politics.

Additionally, he never said anything about the 'giyus law'. He said if Yeshiva bochurim have to go to the army, we will have to leave. Nothing about sanctions, quotas, or Charedim in the Army. In fact, he had no problem with Charedim in the Army. He even told people to go to the Army, and spoke publicly, to the Charedi public, that a bochur who is not learning must go to the Army.

The revisionists changed the shittah to 'no Army for Charedim' not based on any Gedolim from the previous generations.

    5. "the most pragmatic person in politics." is quite a stretch!
He excoriated the Mumrim of Labour at Yad Eliyahu & refused to join their gov't coalition even though Peres was offering a much better $ deal .
He later refused adamantly to join Labor & Meretz in '92. & condemned Deri for caving in to them.

    6. Mr. Cohen, you missed the point of that story.
Rav Shach pulled off a brilliant political shtick then, and gave up a short-term deal for a much better future.
He had the shrewd ability to see past the immediate future, and the non-religious public knew that they had to be careful of him. They couldn't fob him off with a few promises and dollars.

He was the most pragmatic person alive, and he was very forceful against fantasizers. His entire screed against the 'five Drashos' was that it was fantasies, and much of his anti-Lubavitch speeches was devoted to pulling apart his אמונות טפלות.

    7. Wasn't the slightes political nor shtik. He held himself responsible for the atmosphere of the entire country. Only a terrible cynic would manage to come somehow to any such a conclusion from his איפה יהדות שלך

Rav Shach was a genius in politics, nobody came close to him

    9. Could be also..The chasidish politicians used to back then flaunt how much more savvy they claimed were. So super belated recognition, even if so.

  4. More than being pragmatic he was brilliant and realized that there are some issues which you cannot debate or or concede because every government which sets up which in Israel can be once a year Will Demand just a bit more.
You are right that the discussion was never about frum people going to the Army, Possibly because that was unachievable. But he resisted to the point that they knew that it was absolutely not even an issue which He would entertain discussing. That was his policy and anything else is revisionist history.

  5. "realized that there are some issues which you cannot debate or or concede" because he held the strange foreign thing called core principles that are non-negotiable
