Monday August 14 News Updates Lakewood

- The Toms River Democratic Committee is set to choose a new candidate to run for mayor, after John Furey informed the club he was resigning from his candidacy for the seat.

- In a big win today for religious institutions of all denominations, the New Jersey Supreme Court released a decision finding that religious institutions may follow the tenets of its faith in establishing and utilizing criteria for employment, and that the state's anti-discrimination laws do not apply when they conflict with the employer's religious beliefs. full story at faanews  

“This decision is a victory for all religious schools in the state of New Jersey, but it is especially important for Orthodox Jews,” Rassbach added. “There are too many examples in history of governments interfering with Jewish schools, or worse. Today, the court did the right thing for Orthodox Jews and all other New Jerseyans by stopping this attempt to drag government into direct control of religious schools.” Jns

- Dlux Bistro at Gourmet Glatt Plaza has sadly closed.

- Sesame bakery of Brooklyn opening their Lakewood location tomorrow morning 10:00 am the store is located at the cedarbridge commons mall 700 Cedarbridge Ave and will be open daily 6am to 8 pm

- The LDC is holding a special meeting at 4:30pm  this afternoon to formally authorize the $2 million loan for a period of 12 months from UEZ funds as it awaits funding from the state. Faa reports The Township Committee is expected to additionally approve this loan this Thursday. see agenda here watch livestream  here. Last week the township gave 3 million for nom mandated services including busing for the school district not as a loan.

- BMG Elul Zman begins Thursday night rosh chodesh the yeshiva will be learning maseches Bava Metzia perek Elu Metzios 

- The FDA has now admitted that Doctors CAN prescribe Ivermectin to treat COVID. FDA attorneys argued that the agency did not prohibit doctors from prescribing the drug but had issued guidance recommending against its use.senator Ron Joghnson said the FDA sabotaged the use of ivermectin to treat covid19 in the early days of the pandemic  

- Biden slammed for heartless ‘no comment’ response to Maui wildfire, as death toll mounts
President Biden offered a stony-hearted “No comment” Sunday when asked about the mounting death toll in the catastrophic Maui wildfire  the deadliest US wildfire in more than a century  “After a couple hours on the Rehoboth beach, @potus was asked about the rising death toll in Hawaii,” Bloomberg reporter Justin Sink wrote on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter. “‘No comment,’ he said before heading home,” 

- OLS report says  that Lakewood Lakewood school district’s excess costs of $9.7 million for  Reimbursement of Nonpublic School Transportation Costs represented 60 percent of the total excess costs. 

- Several websites reporting on Lakewood have called out a report on another site as 'false" that states Lakewood would have to come up with as much as an additional $3.8 million to fund aid-in-lieu and transportation for tens of thousands of private-school children, after the state raised the figure from $1,022 to $1,165 per student.  LNN reports "The claim is wrong. The additional $143 per child will be fully funded by the state. Local BOE contribution to aid-in-lieu and transportation is capped at $710 per student. Any additional costs are borne by the state. To be sure, Lakewood’s demographics present unique funding challenges. But the false narratives must be stopped.

  4. B"h for such great news for the opening of sesame, my wife has been complaining that she needs to frequent the same stores so often. Lets hope more ppl will come forth and help the community by opening more such stores

    1. How are you helping the community by diluting everybody's business? And then people complain about prices and service too. A new bakery might be successful, but chances are that it will be taking clients away from existing places.

  8. Why is it sad that Dlux closed? They increased their prices, decreased their options, and the public voted with their feet. That is how it generally works.

  11. Basically, restaurants/prepared goods establishments in Lakewood serve unimaginative and largely unhealthy food. It’s the same chicken coated in sesame/cornflake/pretzel/crumbs everywhere. The restaurant menus offer the same exact food items - at relatively high prices. The bakeries are the same. The same kokosh/sponge/ etc everywhere. We need newer ideas and better products - like Patis , that at least tries to make better breads. We also need better facilities. The GG shopping center is ugly - the operator hasn’t put a nickel into upgrading anything there for years. Traffic in and out can be a nightmare. Customers deserve a better experience.
