- Several people contacted the state of NJ Dep of Education to inquire about not  paying for courtesy/subscription busing if you qualify for the lunch program. The state responded according to a submitted response "Hazardous routes are determined by the district of residence and the municipality.  You would need to contact Lakewood BOE directly for any transportation services questions. Regardless, as one commmenter points out  The rule is a town offering subscription /courtesy busing cannot charge lunch recipients. There is really no need to discuss why the township is offering the busing. The bottom line is the busing is officially subscription and they can not charge anyone on the lunch program. So far local officials have not said a word nor did the Township explain how it can legally discriminate against private students by only paying for courtesy of public school students.

  2. The question really is can the township wiggle out and say the busing that the LSTA is giving and township is paying for P.S. is not the Hazardous ie Subscription busing that the state has rules for. Rather the busing it is a private setup through the LSTA and Township. The issue is they have a letter they sent out to P.S. parents which clearly state they are receiving free Hazardous busing. Also when I asked a year ago why the LSTA has mask covid rules - as the busing is a private setup between parents and the LSTA. The response was "It is not -The LSTA is not considered a private setup.. we are basically the same as a BOE transportation..."

    1. The answer is NO the LSTA is not a private entity they are a provider working for the Lakewood BOE and are bound by the same rules. Askanim want you to believe otherwise to avoid any accountability for the shtick.
The reason the askanim set it up was because a few schools that are located in middle of town have most of their students living less than 2 miles away. Otherwise there was no need for another million dollars in administrative fees for something that the BOE is responsible for. The $260 from parents is probably covering some of the administrative salaries.

    2. Correct me if I'm wrong, but thought LSTA is working for the state, not the district

    3. LSTA originally started out as a contractor for the State, but in 2019 switched over to become a district-contracted consortium.

    4. Although my child is eligible for mandated M-F bussing during the week, the school is charging me an extra 250 for Sundays. That sounds like a lot for just one day a week multiplied by a few thousand kids. Am I being made to pay for the courtesy kids M-F transportation costs?

    5. No, that's not a terribly high amount, considering that Sunday bus drivers are likely paid overtime, and that Sunday bussing also covers the school's summer bussing. But you could probably opt out and drive your kids

    6. Anon 12:17,

So you're telling me that the courtesy kids are paying 260 for M-F plus another 250 for Sunday for a total of 510 per child?

    1. Many roshei mosdos of today are not like the good old days when their sole mission was chinuch of yiddisher kinder. Today, they add another 15 houses on Farmers Drive so they can make loads of money. They also install fancy banquet halls in residential neighborhoods, but make it sound much smaller than it is, so they can get their approvals. In the meantime the neighbors lives are ruined from the terrible hezek thrust upon them by these callous owners. Let's face it, schools have become big business for many.
