Lakewood Parents Hit Hard with Tuition Increases

Update: Several Lakewood playgroup morahs unite in raising tuition by more than $100 a month to keep with  the going rate. Some ate not giving a set price yer until there's a standard  one, a $1000 increase for this year. For an average of $500 a month

After all the fanfare, PR articles and photo ops about the need to raise the morahs and teachers salaries, at the end of the day it is the struggling parents who are forced to pay the bill. At a time of record inflation with basic living wages through the roof high grocery and gas prices families having to pay more in rent and other expenses you would think the schools would have some rachmanus. The average American family is paying a a extra $500 a month in costs due to inflation. you can double or triple that for the average frum Lakewood family. Following a year when  Schools made money during covid when costs and expenses were down and schools benefited from PPP loans (and food boxes). Instead they raised tuition for this coming year up to $1200 per child at some schools while others kept it to under $500 nevertheless it all adds up.

The excuse to raise it  besides the inflation is  because of the campaign to raise the salaries. The big money from gevirim never materialized the organizations that pushed it remain silent while quietly right before the year begins when everyone is on summer vacation the tuition contracts arrived in the mail with the shocking increases.

Similar increase with transportation costs parents where given short notice of a $80 increase per child for courtesy busing at the last minute when the town could pay it just as they do for the public schools

. The schools are not fighting on behalf of the parents no one is advocating for them but yes, taking credit for something which at the end of the day ends up hurting the struggling Lakewood families.

  1. You complain there's a morah/babysitting crisis and you complain they can't charge more? Guess what when a seminary girl with no exp. Can make double in medical billing compared to a morah with 10 years exp. Why in the world should anyone be a teacher? The amount they are getting paid compared to any other job is a joke they are basically "Paid volunteers" the fact is there's a huge segment that manage to spend a fortune on vacations, taking their kids to EY! Buying takeout, sushi etc weekly. They seem to have an endless supply of money but somehow hav nothing for tuition??

    1. If you would have read the post you would notice that the point made was not that teachers dont deserve higher salaries. It was that there were ppl (individual askoning and an org.)pushing for the raises making the impression that wealthy donors would cover the raise or schools would raise the money...Yet what actualized is the struggling parents are held holding the bags. P.s. your point about ppl taking expensive vacations is silly as those ppl beleive it or not represent a very small percentage of the 100 percent of parents who had their tuition raised.

    3. Only a matter of time until those jobs start drying up and or paying less. Already happening in a lot of industries including Real Estate and e-commerce.

Healthcare is somewhat insulated because medicare and medicaid money is guaranteed. But the reason for a shortage of workers was constant expansion, and with higher interest rates, that is starting to dry up.

Not to mention, many of these jobs in Nursing Home billing are extremely high stress with a high burnout rate.

  2. Don't you know, Anonymous 11:40, that if we don't give today's children what they want, and what their friends have, i.e. takeout, sushi, vacations, etc., the kids will go off the derech?

  3. Not sure what you are hocking about. The $59 million that BMG raised for the "Adirei Hatorah" will pay the tuition raise

  5. The same parents who can’t afford the tuition raise are still not willing to buy their kids Walmart shoes, target wardrobes, make simchas without miniatures, give CZ engagement rings, stop sending to $2800 sleepaway camps and seminary in Israel. Go back to the Lakewood lifestyle of the 1980s in yeshiva apartments and then you can complain about a tuition that is still half of what parents are paying in other communities.

    1. Really? I do buy Walmart shoes, target wardrobes, and made simchas without miniatures. Did not pay 2800 for sleepaway camp. My 2 oldest daughters have not gone to Israel for seminary. So do I have a right to complain when my kids school wants to raise me 1,600 over last year. No my salary didn't increase. Yes my food costs and everything has gone up, and I wouldn't complain if the Yeshiva would raise me 700. You have some gall to lump everyone together!

    2. You answered your own question years ago you had idealistic people that opened a school for the sake of educating children and they won the support of the community. today you have the same people as well but others made a business out of it and instead of educating children they look make a buck. There's a girls school that was opened by investors and every year the hired rosh mosad must produce the dividends

      Delete
    3. Yes we know about that girls school that was opened years ago by a Rosh Mosed. There has been many schools to follow suit
Today for the most part it is a very profitable business and many school owners have become rich from it.
But they will tell you: if you don't like it go elsewhere or open your own school and that doesn't squish money from parents.
      Are they wrong?

    4. Yes they are very wrong. Schools is not a profit business it is a responsibility to educate children and provide chinuch habonim vehabanos.period full stop.

  7. Here is an idea for all of the budding investigative journalists out there.
Get the public records regarding one school in Lakewood and find out how much money they made off the government during Covid. Work out how large their staff is, and how many children are in the school. Do the math, which will only be an estimate. But when you have a number, you will be forcing the school to answer with better info.
Whining online doesn't do a thing.

  8. We need more community based schools. These ceo's are very special for opening mossdes but unfortunately we can't afford paying him 200k a year plus building fund aka mortgage so he and his kids could retire in Israel and Florida while his building is leased to the new selfless tzadik opening a mossed

    1. There are very few real community based schools in town. Most are run by private operators who get compensated very well from the simcha hall revenue and additional housing they squeeze in because they say it's needed for the school.

Yep, he only makes 60,000. But he and his wife decided that they’ll make it work because they have a desire to give over to the Talmidim.

  14. I lived in Lakewood for many years . When I moved out to a new community the tuition bills were more than double. The reason being the cost of living , housing was much more here. Fast forward many years later . Housing costs in Lakewood are the same as here . Tuition in Lakewood is still too cheap. Every place out of Lakewood will charge 12-15k for tuition. Anyone that needs a break is eligible- based on need. The Lakewood system overcharges those with real need and undercharges those that have the means to pay more

    1. You can't compare Lakewood to OOT Communities. There is a smaller student to teacher ratio in OOT schools. In Lakewood you have up to 45 kids in high school and 30 in elementary. The OOT schools charge more because they provide more of a sophisticated curriculum with professional teachers and lots of other periods with art class gym dance etc..
Lakewood was and still is a yeshiva town of large families poor and middle class who are struggling, yet no one gets a tuition break even if they have many children.
And BTW Bais Faiga is paying a nice chunk of the cheders budget all that extra money is available why does that not go to the teachers and why are they raising tuition to pay another school

    2. Almost everyone gets a tuition break. If you are not paying $6-$7k per kid elementary and $8-$9k for mesivta / BM, then you are getting a break. Almost everyone I know in kollel or kli kodesh are not paying full. And many others as well.
