Yeshiva University, has filed an emergency application in the Supreme Court in an urgent effort to maintain its religious autonomy. The particular dispute arises from an effort by Yeshiva students to create an undergraduate LGBTQ club—and to do so precisely in order to alter Yeshiva’s religious environment. A New York trial court ruled that the New York City Human Rights Law requires Yeshiva to recognize an official Pride Alliance club. It has entered a permanent injunction against Yeshiva, and New York’s higher courts have denied Yeshiva’s requests for emergency relief. The club-application process is now open, so absent emergency relief from the Supreme Court, the permanent injunction will require Yeshiva to approve the club
The Yeshiva explains in its application:
Yeshiva is the world’s premier Torah-based institution of higher education. In Hebrew, the word “yeshiva” literally means a school for studying Talmud. All Yeshiva undergraduate students are required to engage intense religious studies, with many receiving up to four and a half hours of Talmud instruction each day. And the entire undergraduate experience is designed to form students in the Jewish faith: the laws of Shabbat and Kashrut are strictly observed on campus; there are separate men’s and women’s campuses; students are expected to dress and behave consistently with Torah values; the campuses are adorned with religious imagery and symbolism; and the affiliated Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary is integrated into the men’s undergraduate campus and programs. Yeshiva has determined, based on consultation with its Roshei Yeshiva—who opine on Jewish law for Jews all over the world—that an official Pride Alliance club, as described by Plaintiffs and as understood by the culture at large, would be inconsistent with Yeshiva’s religious environment and Torah values

Lakewood Mayor Ray coles blames the state for requiring the township to pay for the courtesy busing of public school children and not private school students. Responding to a question last night at the committee meeting why the Yeshiva children of Lakewood have to pay $260 to the LSTA yet the townahip fully sponsors the public school courtesy busing. The mayor said part of the deal when LSTA was approved, there was a requirement by the state for the township to pick up the tab for the public school students. Other reasons were because of safety, including a public safety issue since alot of the public students would not go to school if they weren't bussed to school. The mayor said the $260 that the LSTA charges is well under the actual cost and under 2 dollars a day. The township gives the BOE 1.2 million a year to help the LSTA and hopefully they will become a vendor where the township could work with them directly.
The mayor did not explain why it is legal to pay for public courtesy transportation and not private school. There was no mention of

Lakewood Parents Hit Hard with Tuition Increases
Update: Several Lakewood playgroup morahs unite in raising tuition by more than $100 a month to keep with the going rate. Some ate not giving a set price yer until there's a standard one, a $1000 increase for this year. For an average of $500 a month
After all the fanfare, PR articles and photo ops about the need to raise the morahs and teachers salaries, at the end of the day it is the struggling parents who are forced to pay the bill. At a time of record inflation with basic living wages through the roof high grocery and gas prices families having to pay more in rent and other expenses you would think the schools would have some rachmanus. The average American family is paying a a extra $500 a month in costs due to inflation. you can double or triple that for the average frum Lakewood family. Following a year when Schools made money during covid when costs and expenses were down and schools benefited from PPP loans (and food boxes). Instead they raised tuition for this coming year up to $1200 per child at some schools while others kept it to under $500 nevertheless it all adds up.

Rabbonim in EY Issue Rent Control Guidance
Rabbonim in the Arzei Habira neighborhood of Yerushalayim put out guidelines to control the rent increases recently which they say falls under what the Rishonim called מפקיעי שערים . They urge new landlords and agencies not to increase the rent for new apartments by more than 10% from last year and for existing tenants not to increase by a maximum of 5% from the previous year. In Lakewood some poskim hold that if one rents out a apt in a house that you live in higher increases are allowed.
