Hamodia: A Community in the Making – Manchester, NJ

Hamodia.com -"At present, we’re a group of young couples in our twenties and low thirties. Many of the men learn in BMG or other yeshivos in town and their wives generally work". "About 20 families live here now; some more families have bought houses "....

"Essentially, we were motivated by the same factor that has brought people to settle in Jackson and Toms River: the availability of affordable housing (which is almost impossible to come by in Lakewood itself these days). But since the growing demand for housing has also pushed up prices in those places, we decided to look a little further afield.

"Most of the children are very young, although one family has a 9-year-old. The children go to playgroups and schools in the Lakewood vicinity, and as we don’t have bussing as yet, we have to provide our own transportation. If you come to live in Manchester, you know you won’t be getting all the

conveniences of Lakewood and, of course, you expect to do a lot of driving. Incidentally, we already have two Chaverim members (myself and another person) and we should be getting Hatzolah representatives after Pesach. There’s even talk of an eruv, but that probably won’t be happening all that soon". read full report at Hamodia

  1. 2 Chaveirim members and 1 Hatzolah member for 20 families?? Sounds like an overkill to me, when you’re a 3 minute drive maximum to the closest members. From TR or Lakewood.

    1. It’s unfortunate that the yungeliet need to move out of town while the NY chasidim take up all the housing in Lakewood. It should be the other way around. The — are very good at exploiting the infrastructure set up by others.

    2. The real estate people gotto make a parnooseh.
Higher prices (supply vs demand) equals higher parnooseh.
It only a matter of a couple of years until Manchester will be of reach as well - parnooseh for individuals equals higher prices for the house buying public....

  2. Go to Lancaster Pennsylvania and Cleveland where houses are cheap and Taxes are low..the Chassidim will not follow you so Quick to these places ot is to far from New York

  3. Dont blame the chasidim from New York they are doing what anyone does who needs housing. This land in Lakewood sat empty for all the years why was it not developed for kollel younngeleit all these years why did it just sit did investors hold it for long term so the prices will go up? well too bad the olam in lakewood had all the time to take care of the housing needs for the yeshiva olam but did not. The olam is now forced to move to Jackson and elsewhere.

    1. there would not have been "housing needs for the yeshiva olam" to take care of if outsiders from new york hadn't moved in and taken the available housing.

    2. What are you hocking about . The land was being developed as the yeshiva community was growing.

Just try to imagine if a bunch of litvaks moved to all the areas arround KJ or NS to take advantage of the infrastructure and sent prices thru the roof. I dont think things would be too peaceful.

  4. Unzere township committeeman went to NY to recruit people to live in Lakewood they are the ones to blame while ignoring the needs of those who were learning in yeshiva and living in Lakewood. Instead of making houses affordable they helped relocate all of Brooklyn while chasing the youngelit away

  5. Continue to spew lies and hate. The chasidim did not take away any housing from yeshiva leit. The sinas chinum is disgusting. And the chasidim have moved to Arizona, Tampa, Jersey City, Union city, Airmont, Staten Island. They don't need your yeshivish infrastructure.

  6. In other words
The problem is the Litvish Leadership which never did a thing for us .
Not the Chassidim who are taking advantage of this vacuum .

  7. I would bet in ten years lakewood proper will be mostly chasidim and the yeshivah lite will be in surrounding towns , its a free world we live in a democracy and capatalism based society , but its not a question that the more people move from brooklyn the less housing there is. But maybe its. A bracha in disguise as all the smaller communities in ausa are seeing a revival instead if it turning into one melting pot

  8. In a couple of years the yoshon will be Toireh VehYirah haChoodosh.
Just keep it up. Keep ignoring the needs of the Talmidim.
Satmar will just walk in and take it all. They prepare and set up everything for their Yeshivah Lahr.

  9. Lakewood eateries sold out of wings superbowl parties all over the place. This was not imported from Brooklyn

    1. Its VERY important in Brooklyn. But there they can afford 6 to 10 foot hero sandwiches with all the trimmings plus some. Here in The Ir HaKoidesh they only can afford wings with the Kollel type of Checks....

  10. Stating the obvious that the chassidim sent prices thru the roof and take over the towns we develop is sinas chinam??? Btw they should bring along their own doctors too so we could get appointments by our doctors the way we always did until they came.

  11. There is one real estate agency that deserves the most blame for prices in Lakewood going so high. This agency brought all the chassidim to town and they took over the market.

    1. First the majority of chasidesh people like myself are here in lakewood becuase we learned in BMG.Secondly the process are going up becuase every litvish couple around the world is coming to lakewood instead of staying in their oitof town community's. I am in lakewood for the past 25 years and I wont be told by some clueless people here that I dodnt belong here.

    2. Did you barge in as a group Or come as an individual

      Delete
    3. the vast majority of chasidish people who moved to lakewood over the past 5 years are not like you. they did not learn in bmg and don't even know where it is. and you know it.

      Delete
    4. I would disagree with that assumption unless you have facts to back up your statement that the vast majority of chasidesh people did not attend BMG. How about the non yeshivish people moving into to lakewood that never attended BMG,how about all the in laws moving to lakewood that from out of town that never attended BMG why are u singling out the chasidesh community are you a racist?

      Delete
    5. yes. they all are part of it too. (by the way, i don't think chasidish is a race)

      Delete
    6. The non yeshivish people cant move to Monroe or Williamsburg or to any chasiddish town. The inlaww and older parents learned in BMG and regardless they are moving to be with their children and are taking over a existing senior housing in restricted communities

      Delete
  12. The one need that bmg should do is create sattelite locations instead of having shalosh regalim every day

    ReplyDelete
  13. Huh? You are debating the fact that most of the chassidim moving to Lakewood the last few years don’t learn and never learned in BMG?? That doesn’t take rocket science.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The in laws moving to Lakewood are mostly moving to senior communities not affecting the rest of the housing market at all. The last few months prices are crazy because interest rates are so low but before that prices already went up 200k thanks to the chassidim.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Prices went up years ago because of hud rental payments that drove up housing prices Young couples can only afford a house with a rental. The chasidim actually take care of each other and build affordable housing for the kehila

      Delete
    2. That is not necessarily true many in laws are moving all over the place.

      Delete
    3. The last time I checked these new chasidim are a tiny percentage of people that are moving to lak5and doubt they are single handedly responsible for the proce increases.

    4. BMG does not own this township and it's a free world just like the litvish moved here and misplaced the local non Jewish population.

      Delete
    5. we misplaced them? that's a pretty big thing to misplace.
they were here just a minute ago...

      Delete
  15. Really? The chassidim are a tiny percentage? Do you know how many thousands of them moved here the last few years?? There are developments built solely for them. Oak and vine alone is tons, you think that didn’t drive prices up?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No I dodnt think these few developments are responsible and neither do you know.

      Delete
  16. BMG doesn’t own the town but we built this city up from scratch and the chassidim come in and take the place over making it unaffordable for all of us. You did the same in BP, it’s nothing new.

  17. Although I believe some realtors did the wrong thing to advertise and convince new york chasidim to move to Lakewood the language used against chasidim like myself that live in lakewood for over 20 years is no different than the language found on tje rise up ocean county website. Shame on u guys ur full of hateful racist people.

    1. Why is it ok to call the litvaks as shkootzim and litfikes

  18. You sound like a liberal calling everyone you don’t like racist. As someone said earlier chassidim is not a race. I have nothing against chassidim but the fact is they have a big part in the increase of home prices.

    1. First of all I am not going into semantics wether chasidim are a race or not at the end of the day the non jews can have the same arguments that u came here and increased the prices that caused them to move out, additionally we dodnt know exactly why the process went up and this is all pure speculation. I speculate that the out of town non yeshiva peope were the cause or all the yeshivush that are moving from out of town to this community rather than staying in their out of town community.

    2. brother, it's okay. if you have lived in lakewood for over 20 years and were not part of the recent mass invasion like you say, then this is not about you. there's no reason to be so self-conscious.

    3. I appreciate you allowing me to stay here in lakewood brother. I am just not sure how u can tell someone looking for a better more affordable life not to come here even if we are not happy with the influx. U would do the same exact thing for ur family.

    4. The only one u can possibly blame is the board for approving all the crazy developments.

  19. I am also a proud chusid living in Lakewood for 15 years. I do believe the influx of chassidim to Lakewood increased prices. It’s very obvious

    1. Are u guys saying that chasidim have no right to move here for a better more affordable life ,whoe are u blaming the chasidim or the realtors that brought them here?. Although I am not happy with the influx I dodnt see how u can blame anyone for wanting a better affordable life for their families.

  20. This notion that a certain group ( we can debate wether chasidim opened the new york community as most people that survived the holocaust were from Hungary that was predominantly chasidesh)started a community precludes others from joining is flawed and racist in my opinion.
