-APP: Lakewood groups are canceling Purim festivities fearing a repeat of last year's COVID-spreading events, and the deaths and illnesses that followed. "For the first time in 80 years, Beth Medrash Govoha, the rabbinical college at the heart of Lakewood, won't host Purim festivities, rabbi Aaron Kotler, the school's CEO and president, told the Press.  The biggest statement possible is that we're not scheduling any celebrations (at BMG)," Kotler said. "... The physicians and the rabbis and community activists continue to caution folks to be extremely careful on whatever activities are taking place or being done in a far more careful fashion."APP

  1. It is smart to cancel the Yeshiva's celebration ומשום שנאה משום איבה.

But don't not one person think that the Purim מסיבות last year was the cause of any spread. The entire NY NJ area was hit right after Purim in all communities. Enough with the big lie. The people who are blaming Purim are not just stupid, they're point blank liars.

    1. What do you mean? Tons of pple got sick right after purim. I guess not your friends and family. Its not a lie at all!

    2. It was the best brocha that we all got it then after purim and we've been 99.99% done with it ever since

    3. He's right. I never thought of that. The entire region got hit within those few days. It was a coincidence that it was Purim and probably had nothing to with it.

  2. People flew to Florida for midwinter all out of town schools had very strict rules about quarantine for 2 weeks. Lakewood was a free for all with no restrictions no letters were sent from askanim or rabbonim

    1. Because the askanim were the ones flying to florida

    2. This isn't true, they put a letter out earlier in the winter as well.

    3. Shtusim. The real askanim flew to Dubai.

  3. And the rabbanim wonder why we don't listen to them about serious matters. It's because they give out meaningless rules. We all know that the yeshivas in town are all wide open, so not having a purim mesiba changes little about the facts of who we are mingling with. This is nothing but a cave-in to some loudmouths. If they are so concerned about covid, every yeshiva in town should be closed.

You can't have it both ways. Covid is not active only on purim. If we are still concerned, then shut the town down. But we are not shut, so that shows they are not overly concerned. We have defied every CDC recommendation, and the fatalities have been few. Yes every one is too much, but statistically irrelevant. Study the halacha of mageifa and we have not reached the halachic threshold.

And for those concerned, STAY HOME!!

    1. You sound like such a tipush. Maybe you had an early Purim lchaim. They weren’t saying that the virus spread more on Purim than other times. Just that you should stay with the same group of people you are typically with as opposed to mingling from all over. That is something that is very normal to happen on Purim so they are just saying to avoid that.

    2. Thank you for deciding when you need to and when you don't need to listen to the Gedolim. This is exactly the kind of argument Korach made. Great job!

    3. more name calling. Is that the only tactic they teach in yeshiva? Nice to see the only two people talking in town to the APP are Aron Kotler and Harold Hershkovitz. Anyone with a brain says "no comment".

    4. Yeshivos must stay open since as we all know to keep them closed forever isn't an option. Sadly there isn't an alternative, same goes for schools. Even in the broader world they all agree to this. Purim however is different ppl can stay home yes it would be nice to have a regular purim this year but we can also do without it. Remember the Rambam the Ikar is to help the poor which can be done in some way at home too. And that's where the Rabbonim come into play. No they won't dictate if you should or should not go to Florida since this isn't communism and that's beyond their control. But as far as Purim is concerned where it's all a matter of Halacha then obviously yes it's very fitting for Rabbonim to issue (Halachic) guidance so we don't repeat last year's mistake.

    5. 9:58. Please, keep your kruma sevaros to yourself. Every day theres an enormous amount on mingling taking place - brissim, bar mitzvos, vorts, chasunos etc why is the mingling on purim any different

      Delete
    6. 10:32 The reason its NOT fitting is because there is NO pandemic in our town. There is mingling (simchos) every day, every night and no one says a peep. Why are they letting it out on purim? Simchas purim is the highlight of the year for many people, myself included. Why ruin it for us?

  6. Anon 11:08 there’s a big difference between ppl’s personal Simchos אין גוזרין גזירה שאין הציבור יכולים לעמוד בה and Purim. Purim is a Simcha of the Tzibbur so that’s why guidelines makes sense. The fact is that everyone runs wild, so to speak on Purim. So the point is to do it responsibly it can easily be celebrated on a smaller, more private scale. Nobody is trying to deprive you of the highlight of your year, on the contrary celebrate your yearly highlight but do it responsibly.

I mamesh dont chap the hevdel you are making. Every chasuna is a massive assifas tzibbur of family, friends, neighbors, people from the shul and shiur, people come from out of state etc etc full of elderly people who are 100 times more at risk than yungeh bochrim.

    2. The ones who decide how many people to invite to a chasuna are the balei simcha. The ones who decide if yeshivos should have misibos and if bochorim should collect are the roshei yeshivos.

  7. Don't be fooled for a minute that the Rabbonim here in LA are really doing this. Its a bunch of local askanim making pressure, just like by you in Lakewood. And what a joke- corona is RAMPANT in LA! As if a few groups knocking on doors will make a difference. Sure.

  8. There cant be any greater way for honoring the spirit of purim then by shutting down large gatherings etc , the Spirit is ahava vreius to highten our love for each others well being to the highest level by going above and beyond to protect others on purim even if we dont do it rest if the year can only be a great meilitz yosher for klal yisroel espo after there is so much spilled blood on our hands that we are in denial of just like the nazis where post world war 2 , nuo because you cant live with the guilt if death caused by our own hands dosent mean it didn't happen

  9. Nobody’s going to listen anyway. It will be toned down because it’s Friday but otherwise pretty much a regular Purim.
