Lakewood Township Commitee keeps it on Zoom

Whats going on with the Lakewood township committee

Lakewood mayor Ray Coles is expected to be appointed to a 6th consecutive term at the reorganization meeting this coming January 2nd but unlike before covid when the meeting was a joyous event attended by dignitaries, community leaders and residents the meeting will be virtual on zoom. The swearing in will be done over the phone as it was during the pandemic. At the same time the Zoning and planning boards have been holding meetings in person and the BOE announced they will do so as well beginning in 2023.

The question many are asking is why is the township not holding in person meetings? What are they hiding?  Why are they denying the public the ability to attend meetings and speak to them directly. they are the 4th largest town in NJ with over 150k residents. some keen observers have mentioned that some members on the committee have not been heard from at all lately, and even during the zoom meetings the committeemen  don't even show their face on the camera but only t have the audio turned on. Township members have attended and seen at public events around Lakewood with packed crowds so that can't be an excuse for keeping things remote.

Coles is up for reelection this year so is Mike Delia, yet reports are that Mike wont be running for reelection opening up a seat on the township for potential candidates which can make a interesting primary race this spring

A petition was recently launched declaring the mayor  for Supreme leadership in Lakewood See HERE

How did Orthodox Judaism come to develop in the winter resort town of Lakewood, NJ?

With an article on Rav Aharon Kotler Zatzal in last week's Mishpacha issue,  historian and columnist Dovi Safier @safier follows up with a twitter Thread: How did Orthodox Judaism come to develop in the winter resort town of Lakewood, NJ? see full thread with documents photos and clippings Here

It began 125 years ago with an unlikely trio that included a former student of Rav Leizer Gordon in Telz, a crippled Baltimore heiress and a hotshot former colonel in the Union Army During the winter of 1879, a speculator named Charles Kimball came to Lakewood (then known as Bricksburg) & saw a miraculous recovery from lung disease—which he credited to the pure air that came from the towns abundant pine trees. He now sensed an opportunity. Assisted by a well-marketed myth that local winter temperatures there were 10+ degrees warmer than NYC, he joined forces with a local developer, postmaster and general store owner named Cap. Albert Bradshaw to promote the picturesque lakeside town as a winter health resort. Bradshaw, who claimed he had “done more to benefit Lakewood than any other man” was not, in fact, interested in nurturing religious life. Instead, he wanted to ensure that the shul was built away from the town’s hotels, believing the presence of Jews would diminish their value.
In an article about the early history of Lakewood, BMG archivist Rabbi Moshe Rockove pointed out the irony that “one who fought to end slavery in the South would seemingly pursue segregation in his own backyard by drawing a Jewish Mason-Dixon line in his own town.”
Sinister as his motivations may have been, Bradshaw arranged for the donation of a plot of land on the other side of the tracks, at Park Avenue & 4th St. Goldstein now turned his attention to building the shul—which is where Bertha Rayner Frank of Baltimore enters our story.
Born into a prestigious family of German origin in 1947, her brother, Isidor Rayner was one of the first Jews elected to the US Senate. In her 20’s she developed an illness which left her crippled. With her husband’s passing in 1906, she vowed to donate her fortune to charity.

Her condition had her spending a considerable amount of time in Atlantic City, but when in 1906 one of the hotels she frequented refused to accommodate her niece, telling her that “Jews were not desired as guests,” she decided to make Lakewood her preferred destination. Mrs. Frank agreed to donate $5,000 and help raise the remaining balance from wealthy friends such as Nathan Strauss, George Gould, and John Rockefeller. By the end of 1907, construction was completed, and Congregation Sons of Israel opened. The congregation eventually built a newer location on the corner of 6th and Madison. The original building, known as “the old shul” still stands and is utilized each day by a chaburah from Beth Medrash Govoha. For more, see Here

Halachos Minhagim For Erev Shabbos Chanukah

 Erev Shabbos Chanukah Halachos Uminhagim

Halachos for this year erev shabbos chanukah based in part on Rabbi Felder's sefer Shiurei Halacha.

One who is traveling should give themselves extra time for arrival, in order to daven mincha and light chanuka candles

One should light the Ner  Chanuka before the Ner shabbos  but it should be done not less then within a half hour to shkia or 5 to 10 minutes prior to licht benching.

The Mishna Berura writes it is preferable to daven Mincha before one lights ner Chanukah on Erev Shabbos since it would be a תרתי דסתרי, (meaning if one considers it to be night after the plag how can you go and daven mincha afterwards).  However if one can not do so, he may daven after lighting the menorah  especially if it means davening with a minyan as opposed to davening before b'yechidos without a minyan.

The lights must be capable of burning until 30  minutes after nightfall they should be lit for an hour and forty five minutes. Therefore, one must be  careful on erev Shabbos to use sufficient oil or long candles that can burn until this time.

Children should also use long shabbos candles so their menorah will burn longer.

A wife can light shabbos candles after her husband lit the menorah and does not have to wait for everyone else to finish lighting

This year shabbos is also Rosh Chodesh we insert in benching על הניסים ,רצה ,יעלה ויבא

According to the mishna Berura we do not give or receive  chanuka gifts on shabbos unless its needed for shabbos

On Motzei shabbos there are various minhagim if one lights the menorah before or after

- From a email that was sent out by a Respected Rov following up on the letter posted in Lakewood shuls by TAG regarding new kosher APP's for Jewish videos and musicand podcasts
-There is a new device being marketed to the Olam Hatorah by the frum media [which tragically has no rabbinic oversight].
This malevolent device can potentially wreak havoc on the minds and souls of young & impressionable future Talmidei Chachamim and Imahos B'Yisroel.
Be aware -
1. This device is essentially a smartphone and only time will tell if it is truly "Internet safe".
2. Who exactly is determining the kashrus of all the videos it contains? One has to be a fool to assume that all the content on the device is of the type that ehrliche yidden are comfortable allowing their children to see.
3. Even if every single video on this nefarious device is truly kosher, putting endless videos in the hands of a child is a sure-fast way to perpetually distract a child from his/her studies, besides for the long term harmful effects it will have on their brain capacity & function.
4. Even just the audio part of this device contains grave danger to young Bnei Torah. Many of the singers featured are frum in name only. Their jarring tunes and provocative lyrics share more in common with hellinistic culture than with the culture of מתתיהו ובניו דרך ישראל סבא
5. Although formidable parental controls are being offered allowing discerning parents to control exactly what their children will see or listen to. The sad reality is that once this powerful device is in the hands of the children, the super majority of parents won't be able to withstand the relentless pressure of their children to make more and more of its very alluring content available to them, and at all times.

Perhaps for the type of children who anyway have free access to poorly filtered Smartphones, this device might be beneficial, but for the children of Bnei Torah who have sacrificed so much to keep their children technologically pure, this device is the proverbial wolf in barely discernible sheep's clothing. It should be considered beyond the pale for anyone who is part of the Olam HaTorah!

Nu, Who Takkeh Makes the best Sufganiyot

When it comes to Chanukah donuts, there's no one size fits all or one that satisfies every pallet. There are many more options and varieties available nowadays to buy a good donut. The traditional chanukah Jelly donut, either homemade or the Israeli style sufganiya, fried in tons of oil is one many yearn for and has a nostalgic feel. With time, a larger variety of donuts has since taken over the market, some have no oil at all which is a far cry from the minhag to eat oily foods on Chanukah. However there is still a large assortment of many more choices, varieties and flavors. Local bakeries and stores bake their own while others get it delivered from New York or from bakeries in the tri state area. Ice cream stores, Sushi vendors, fleishig takeout stores have all made their own donuts lekavod Chanuka.

Despite the steep prices, the stores are selling out. With a large variety of donuts there sure are many options not only as a topic of conversation but to get one of your specific liking.

Recently, a sefer עמק הסופגנים with 400 pages was published for chanukah on the minhag of eating donuts or sufganiyot on Chanukah. The sefer is the 3rd chelek and part of a series called אכילה בהלל: עיונים וביאורים בעניין חיובי ומנהגי אכילה בימי חנוכה written by Rav Reuvein Shwartz shlita of Brooklyn, NY and has haskamos  of the Chevron Rosh Yeshiva Harav Dovid Cohen shlita and other gedolei Roshei Yeshivos.

Here's a review by R' Moshe Schapiro:

Hamodia: Rav Brudny Responds to Rav Twerski on No Chasidishe Representatives on Agudah Moetzes

"However, the reality is that today in America, the Rebbes of the larger Chassidishe kehillos have not joined the Moetzes. We therefore have to find a different way to create a partnership".

In an interview with the Hamodia newspaper with the Mir Rosh yeshiva Harav Elya Brudny shlita was asked anong other subjects about Rabbi Twerski's comments at the agudah convention that there is no chasiddishe representation on the moetzes.

Hamodia: full interview Royalty of Torah

Question: In the lifetime of Rav Aharon, along with the Litvisshe Gedolim in the leadership of Agudas Yisrael were also Chassidishe Rebbes, including the Novominsker Rebbe [Harav Nochum Mordechai], the Bluzhever Rebbe, the Boyaner Rebbe, and the Kopyczynitzer Rebbe.

At the recent Agudah convention, Rabbi Aaron Twerski bemoaned the fact that currently, there is no representation of the Chassidishe kehillos in the Moetzes.

Rabbi Twerski is a tayere Yid whom I personally value.

We happen to have more than one family connection.

Rabbi Twerski, zol zein gezunt, had an older brother, Reb Mottel, z”l, who was my father’s accountant. Reb Mottel told a cousin of his who was a close friend of mine how Harav Shmuel Brudny would go through the tax return with him and ask him, “Dos iz glatt kosher?”

“I never saw such a Yid before. I have to convince him that it is perfectly legal…”

Rabbi Twerski’s twin brother, Harav Michel, the Hornisteipler Rebbe in Milwaukee, is a mechutan of our family. His illustrious eidem HaravLeizer Geldzahler, zt”l, was my first cousin.

Reb Aaron Twerski is an ish yadua u’mefursam. He has all the credentials to say his opinion.

The Eibershter was mezakeh me to be in a position of influence in Agudas Yisrael, and it is from that viewpoint that I would like to reply to what he said.

There is nothing that, at any level of Agudas Yisrael leadership, whether Rabbinic or lay, is wanted more than to have as partners the Chassidishe leadership of Klal Yisrael, and overtures have been made to try to achieve this goal.

The Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah is intended to represent the leadership of Klal Yisrael that is aligned with the Agudah. Just like Roshei Yeshivah represent the Litvishe olam haTorah, the Admorim represent the Chassidishe olam haTorah. That is how the Moetzes of Agudas Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael works, and that’s how it worked in the first generation in America.

However, the reality is that today in America, the Rebbes of the larger Chassidishe kehillos have not joined the Moetzes.

We therefore have to find a different way to create a partnership.

A few years ago, a forum was established in which Rabbanim and Dayanim representing some of the Chassidishe kehillos, along with Litvishe Rabbanim at the helm of the Agudas Yisrael, held several meetings. During COVID, a key member of this forum, Harav Dovid Olewski, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivah of Ger, was niftar, and the meetings did not continue.

Ideas have been floated trying to come up with creative solutions for this issue.

If there is a creative way to establish leadership forums where the two kochos could be united, then members of the Moetzes of Agudah would be glad to be mishtatef.

In an informal way, there already is tremendous collaboration with the Chassidishe velt, particularly regarding the threat to chinuch in New York state. I have been by the Satmar Rebbe Harav Zalman Leib Teitelbaum, shlita, on at least two occasions at meetings in Wiliamsburg, and have worked closely with his son, Harav Yaakov Ber, the Sigeter Rav of Boro Park.

I have also visited the Satmar Rebbe Harav Aharon Teitelbaum, shlita, and the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, shlita, in Monsey about this issue. On the level of askanim, I consider myself very close to Reb Moshe Dovid Neiderman, Reb Yossie Grunwald of Pupa, among others. Anashim achim anachnu.

I grew up in Williamsburg. I never felt like an outsider in the Chassidishe world. When I learned in Lakewood 50 years ago, Litvishe and Chassidishe learned b’chavrusa, and we were and have remained yedidim ne’emanim — closest friends. We never felt any level of estrangement with Chassidim; kulanu b’nei ish echad anachnu [we’re all children of the same father]. One Ribbono Shel Olam, one Torah, and one Yiddishkeit. So it’s all di zelbe zach.

Can the Rosh Yeshivah please give us a brachah?

May we be zocheh to be mamlich each other’s malchus shel Torah, and we should all become an agudah achas b’malchus Shakkai. May it be b’karov, b’karov, b’karov. Like we say in Maoz Tzur — d’chei admon b’tzel tzalmon, hakeim lanu ro’eh shivah. Hamodia

Have We Forgotten

Have we forgotten it was only 2 years ago when people said life is back to the basics when weddings can take place in backyards and consumerism of gashmiyus was a thing of the past. Fast forward 2 years, not only has it been forgotten but we are worse off than pre covid and have far surpassed the  limits of a few years ago. It is not anymore a simple  gashmiyus issue but an acceptance and chasing of mishegassen and over the top luxury consumerism  that have become a way of life.

There's no more buying a slice of pizza, a simple bagel or a scoop of ice cream. It has to be artissinal, hand crafted, or something extraordinary about it where you feel good spending an extra $10 for it. Ice cream is no longer a nice treat if you don't spend $50 for a few scoops. Stores are spending hundreds of thousands on interior decorating to sell their merchandise because otherwise customers won't walk in. A Lakewood magazine recently posted an ad for chartered airline seats  to Fort Lauderdale, FL. This is a standard publication yet these ideals are being pushed on the community as an accepted norm.

It starts  out as a joke but over time the societal pressures mainstream it, raising the bar on everyone else. Spending $1000 on a winter coat is now an accepted norm and puts pressure on teenagers begging their parents to buy the knock off moose knuckle brand for only $500. We've gone from a little extra gashmiyus to way beyond over the top. For Chanukah, a donut is no more plain with jelly but it has to cost  $7- $10 a piece infuzed with anything but oil. A simple challah for shabbos is now a choice of over 25 different types ranging from egg, water, whole wheat, heimish, sweet. pretzel, artesanal, french, sweet, and the latest sourdough trend. Bakeries can no longer sell a few varieties but have to keep on inventing and creating more products to always have something new. A kiddush must have the latest meat or fish boards there no more regular standard. The need to keep on adding new sophisticated products drives up the costs and takes something that used to be a norm for years, to a short shelf life of a few months until the next must have craze comes around.

Now, while  there are  people that can afford this lifestyle and spend as they wish, the social pressure has a direct result on those who can't afford it.

Never has there been such a disparity of rich and poor in the same place with people who barely make ends meet yet this lifestyle flies in everyone's face and the stores are pushing this lifestyle on everyone as they gain to profit by marketing and targeting the high end consumerism. As a result the cost of simple living is not attainable or affordable across the board from clothing to food  to cars, housing, vacations, Simchas and the list goes on.

At the recent Agudah convention this topic of consumerism  and Gashmiyus was addressed throughout the weekend with a special Sunday morning session dedicated to it. The roshei yeshiva spoke about the importance to connect to Limud Hatorah which will satiate the neshama and not have it chase other things, being samech bechelko. but  they said something has to be done about it.

-Ben Shapiro article about modern orthodoxy "Modern Orthodoxy’s Moral Failure" Modern Orthodoxy is in a state of crisis because its leadership class has, in large measure, abandoned its central principles in favor of political expedience. Today, many supposedly Modern Orthodox institutions have moved toward the corruption of Jewish values by infusing the worldview of secularism. Some have entirely abandoned the notion that Torah values are eternal and true. And they have done so in the name of the most dangerous illusion provided by the worldview of secular morality... Judaism allows for the reality of sin, but it does not brook the argument that halachic values ought to be overturned because some are unable to resist sin. Jews are those who accept the Torah, accept the halacha, accept Jewish values – without discomfort, without embarrassment, with pride in a worldview that was born at Sinai and that has stood as the bedrock of Western civilization for three thousand years. - Agudah statement: Agudath Israel of America registers deep chagrin with yet another front-page New York Times attack on the Orthodox Jewish, and, especially, the Chasidic community. This marks nearly a dozen articles spewed by the Times in the past three months – all defaming and misrepresenting our community.

Once again, the “reporting” exclusively features the opinions and stories of individuals who have left their communities and those closely affiliated with groups dedicated to tearing down traditional Jewish education and helping religious people leave their roots. Conversely, notwithstanding repeated outreach to the Times, the paper has consistently shunned any narrative that does not portray the Orthodox community as backward, societal leeches, controlled and persecuted by their own religion. Even the photographs selected, the sullen faces and marching children, are marshalled to further this narrative. This, notwithstanding that the Orthodox Jewish community produces thousands of hardworking, successful, civic-minded, peaceful families, who are an asset to every New York community they choose to reside in.....
