  2. Trump still going at on. McConnell is going to whip all his members into line and is urging House Republicans to stop.

I saw Newt Gingrich, when asked about Trump's prospects, he did not think they looked good. He said Americans do not like sore losers.

I do not think most politicians are as alarmed as academics about the bad precedent. They apparently feel republic is safe and Trump's behavior will not be repeated by a future president. They probably are right but at the same time we witnessed the balances of the system prevailing (good) we cannot take comfort that half the country supported the push (not good).

Perhaps we can take note, that even though the system stood strong, future generations will know what to be vigilant against. We assume that one day the system might fail, but now we have a vision of what that failure one hundred, two hundred years from now, will look like. I always assumed it will be when the Supreme Court loses its authority. No. It will come about, just like in every other politically backwards country that we thought could never happen here in our sophisticated American-British tradition (the British have a great monarchy whose whole purpose is to promote democracy), that one party will become dominant and controlled top-down by a super-popular leader who will have to win at all costs.

    1. Liberalism is why we are free and live in a capitalist society. Before liberalism, the economy was like you find in Choshen Mishpat 156, where you could not do business without the privilege from the government, like ma'afuria etc. Once you got the privilege you got a right of hasagas g'vul. Liberalism said that the economy should be free.

Keep religion out of politics. Tocqueville said in the 1830 that the reason why religion was so strong in America, and it still is, was because clergy did not take political positions. It was always like that until the silent majority under Reagan but that was just an aberration. Traditionally, religion is kept separate from politics in this country. It moderates our politics and keeps religion pure. Once a clergyman becomes a partisan, he is open to attack just like any other partisan. That is theory, at any rate.

    3. Trump is as liberal as they get. But the president has extremely limited power. He cannot affect freedom in one way or another.

Edmund Burke, a Whig leader during the revolutionary period, was the father of conservatives. He did not believe in any grand theories of society like Locke, Smith or even today, Milton Freidman, who considered himself a liberal. Burke held reform comes about through the political process without any reference to theory. Burke had a good point because he said that France, by doing away with all its traditions in favor of some theory, became a bloodbath. The killed in the name of freedom, just the the Communists killed in the name of their theory. BUrke said that the American Revolution was really a conservation because Parliament violated the long recognized rights of Englishmen in America and therefore the Americans were not fighting for a theory but to preserve the English constitution, without the king of course.

So now, how is Trump a conservative, he had tried to undo, overturn, upset, recreate almost all we hold dear in this nation. That sounds like a radical liberal to me.

    4. The terms liberal and conservative as used today have nothing to do with Liberalism. You can be liberal with the spices and put in a lot or conservative and put in less. Liberals today want more government and change (of standards). Conservatives today want less government and less change. Liberalism is as the first reply wrote.

  4. I made a mistake. It was Carl Rove, the man who gave G. Bush his crash course in Texas politics when he became governor and made him president also, who said Americans don't like a sore loser. I saw him saw it.
