Artscroll is not really learning? Someone should be embarrassed for learning from it?? In gantzen nisht varshtandig.
ReplyDeleteWhen learning is not just about getting the daf done or getting the info on the gemara in the easiest way possible, rather it is the toil of the mind to understand Hashem's Torah - even at the most basic level. Then learning with an artscoll gemara becomes counterproductive to what you're actually trying to accomplish in learning.
DeleteThis can be debated for those who are not in the yeshiva system, as many do benefit from this gemara.
However for mesivta bochurim who's minds are being trained to be able to learn, an artscoll gemara is the definitely harmful to their shteiging
Used to be obvious.By you're raising the question shows how far away who we are from who we once were.
DeleteYou think that learning Gemara from an Artscroll doesn't require any toil? It's a great Gemara and all, but you guys really give Artscroll too much credit. It doesn't make learning effortless.
DeleteSimple. Magidei shiur are afraid they'll have nothing to add if talmidim can look as well. 😄
ReplyDeleteIt's assur to say that learning from Artscroll Gemara is not considered learning. It may not be the highest form of iyun, but one still needs to toil to understand a Gemara even when using the wonderful Artscroll Gemaras. And the same applies to using Mesivta on Shas. All the eminent Gedolim who gave haskamos, including Rav Elyashiv and R' Dovid Feinstein would disagree with that statement, and, as is well known, R' Aaron Leib Shteinman used and praised the Artscroll Hebrew Yerushalmi (there is a photo of him using it). Moreover, after learning a sugya, even an advanced Talmid Chochom can gain a lot of clarity from reviewing the material in the English Gemara, his spoken language, and perusing the wonderful mareh mekomos (which are often even more substantial in the Hebrew edition). As the gaon Rav Dovid Cohen of Flatbush has noted, the massive recent interest in Daf Yomi is completely to Artscroll's credit.
ReplyDeleteWrong
DeleteR'Shteinman said about something similar while it was in the process, if it supports yungerleit he'll give a haskama
though he considered it questionable
There could be a positive in something that's overall negative
DeleteAnd what's the problem with Steinsaltz
YOU are wrong. There are multiple photos of him and his chavrusa using it and he praised it highly. It is a masterpiece -- the clearest and most comprehensive elucidation of Yerushalmi that exists. He certainly did not see anything "questionable" about it. Rav Elyashiv also highly praised the Hebrew Artscroll Bavli Gemara and used it himself on eili tereifos.
DeleteWho says the recent interest in Daf Yomi is a positive thing?
ReplyDeleteI hope you're not serious about that comment. If you are, you need your head examined by a specialist.
Deleteit's certainly a positive thing for those who wish to become true Talmidei Chachomim and not over-analyze four blatt their whole lives, an exercise in futility
DeleteTorah is Torah. It is the elitist attitude that Artsscmroll is not learning that helps those who don't fit the mold want to leave the fold.

ReplyDeleteThe world can be divided to two eras : BA Before Artscroll -1976 (BT,Barely 1976-1990)
AA 1990-
The nostalgia people have for the earlier era - though they're unaware of what they moan for, was due to the atmosphere that existed prior
Superficial and artificial knowledge information that doesn't impact the fiber of your being is not what/who we are about .
ReplyDeleteAnything else or alternative is elitism
