Rav Hershel Waxman zt”l

Matzav.com - It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Rav Tzvi Elimelech (Hershel) Halevi Waxman zt”l, one of the pioneers of the Monsey, NY Torah community. He was 96. The levayah will be held on Monday, at 11 a.m., at Beth Medrosh of Monsey, located at 3 Harvest Court in Monsey, NY. The aron will then be taken to JFK Airport, for kevurah  in Eretz Yisroel

A descendent of the Bnei Yissochor, Rav Waxman was active in the Monsey community for over half a century.

After his yeshiva years, he married his rebbetzin, Esther, a daughter of Reb Mordechai Bruks of Williamsburg.

Rav Waxman was prepared to enter the field of chinuch when, seeing his unique organizational abilities, the roshei yeshivah of Bais Medrash Elyon asked him to become a member of the administration of the kollel. Rav Waxman didn’t want to become a fundraiser, however, and he spoke to the rosh yeshiva, Rav Reuven Grozovsky, about it. Rav Reuven showed him a Gemara about the value of limud haTorah of the rabbim and said, “You will have a zechus of supporting yungeleit who will each have their own yeshivos one day.” Indeed, members of Bais Medrash Elyon like Rav Simcha Schustal, Rav Don Ungarisher, Rav Moshe Dovid Steinwurzel, Rav Mottel Weinberg, and Rav Yaakov Moshe Kulefsky, among others, would go on to become gedolei roshei yeshiva, much to Rav Waxman’s delight, as they benefitted from his years of leadership at Bais Medrash Elyon.

Following his years of serving as executive director of Bais Medrash Elyon, Rav Waxman went on to found of the Beth Medrosh of Monsey Kollel, with the blessings of the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Moshe Feinstein, and Rav Yaakov Kamenetsky. He labored on behalf of his kollel, meriting to oversee the building of a beautiful bais medrash to serve as a home for the kollel. The kollel has been in existence for some four decades and has produced many rabbonim and mechabrei seforim.

He is survived by an outstanding family of bnei and bnos Torah. His children are Rav Meshulam Zishe Waxman, Rav Reuven Pinchos Waxman, Mrs. Sima Greenes, Mrs. Charna Minzer and Mrs. Rivky Kutner. He is also survived by his brother and sister. His wife, Mrs. Esther Waxman a”h, passed away 2-1/2 years ago. He was predeceased by his son Rav Yechiel Meir Waxman zt”l, longtime administrator of the Lakewood Cheder and gabbai at Bais Medrash Govoah.
