Close to $200 Million in Covid Relief to Lakewood, Taxes & Tuition Not Likely To Go Down

Lakewood will be receiving close to 200 million dollars for Covid related funding from the stimulus bill. The money will be going to the school district and township govt. How the money will be spent remains to be seen, Will Taxes and tuitions go down? Not likely as the funding goes to specific covid expenses and educational assistance. Yeshivos will also get funding from a # billion grant for private schools.

Tomorrow the Lakewood BOE will introduce the budget for the 2021-2022 school year at a total of Total $291,587,611 million. which includes request for a loan of $69 million from the state

The following are the covid funding:
- $130 million for Lakewood Township School District $130,174,000 as per NJ.com
- $27.3 million in direct assistance to the township from the American rescue plan
-The Murphy administration announced plans on Feb. 19 to spend $1.2 billion in federal COVID relief funds to address the academic and mental health impacts of the pandemic on New Jersey students and educators.  Lakewood Public Schools will receive- $51.2  million according to LNN (not clear if this is included in the 130 million or separate)

In addition, The Stimulus relief bill includes $2.75 billion for private schools and yeshivos as reported in

the NYT that Senator schumer and OU outreach lobbied for it. It will enable private schools, like yeshivas and more, to receive assistance and services that will cover Covid-related expenses they incur as they deliver quality education for their students.”

  2. This money can not be used for regular budget. Only for specific things related to Covid ,mental health fir covid kids and things like that. Reooening expenses fir social distancing . Cant pay teachers salaries or any regular expenses .
This 1.9 trillion is mostly a big waste of money. Democrats know how to waste money very well.

  3. We should cut the before and after public school programs & sports that are not mandated to save a few million. Don't worry, they won't really be cut.

As soon as the BOE proposes that, the state (with help from our black & Hispanic senators and bleeding liberal democrats) will all of a sudden come up with extra money for this. But as long as they increase taxes and just borrow and eventually hit the Jewish homeowners with more increased taxes, then no one in government cares.

  4. Anon 4:58 - It seems this needs to be explained, although I don't know why.
We all gain from the before and after school programs, not just those attending them. There are children off the streets, and they are more likely to stay out of gangs. We all gain when gangs' membership goes down.
We, the Jewish homeowners, need a robust public school system, for today and the future. A better public school means a better society, 10 20 and 30 years down the road.
And your racial slur on certain senators is disgusting and warrants strong condemnation.

    1. Everyone benefits if the public schools provide a better education and deal with gang problems etc. but I don't believe for a second that the millions of dollars being thrown at the public schools will even make a dent towards accomplishing those goals. You can throw the money into the garbage directly and expect almost the same results.
