Gezeiras Giyus: Statement of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of America

The American moetzes gedolei hatorah released a letter in Hebrew with no English translation regarding the gezeiras giyus in Eretz Yisrael and the redifas Hadass against the bnei yeshivos as the army canceled the exemptions and defermens of the military draft to yeshiva bochurim. The moetzes is mishtatef in the tzaar and  joins the call of gedolei Eretz Yisrael calling on toshvei EY to stand strong with mesiras nefesh in the face of the gezeiros and calling on everyone to be mechazek in Torah and Tefilla pleading to Hashem that even one neshama from Klal Yisrael should not get lost. The letter is signed by the moetzes without individual signatures and the Agudah logo is on bottom.

  1. They aren't forcing that the Yeshiva bochurim go to the army.

They are merely cutting off funds, amounting to around $200 million a year.

If frum people support Torah, they have more than enough money to step up to the plate and come up with $200 million. If frum people don't care enough to come up with $200 million, why should we force secular Israeli taxpayers to come up with the money. Does this sound fair? Is there any precedent in halacha for any of this?

    1. Did we issue letters thanking the govt for the millions of dollars of support for Torah until now? Why do we put out letters only to complain?

    2. Why should frum taxpayers support hundreds of millions for secular culture projects? I guess the Tirah is less valuable to you than the movies and theater and other culture projects sponsored by the government. Frum oeople pay billions in taxes , contrary to the nonsense of the Secular press. They pay 17% of evert product they purchase in the grocery store and anything else. That alone is billions of shekels. They pay crazy percentage if taxes on every apartment construction and purchase. . A huge percentage of frum women plus 50% of frum Ken work and pay taxes. So stop this garbage that all tax money comes from the Secular. That is a left wing talking point and it's pure sheker .

    3. Yes, the frum people do pay taxes. Did I ever say otherwise? The point, however, is that they pay much less, per capita, than the secular Israelis. The poorest towns in Israel are Haredi (even poorer than the Palestinian towns). Even after cutting this 200 million, the Haredim pay less than their share. But there are enough wealthy Haredim - particularly in America - that can easily support this system without having to force secular Israelis to support it.

  2. What you are saying is not accurate. Tge law at this time requires them to force every bochur to leave yeshiva and go to the Army. They may or may nor actually enforce the law because they don't have enough jails for all the bochrim . But just having a law on the books that technically closes all yeshivas over 18 years old ,whether enforced or not is a very big kitrug r"l.

  4. There was obviously alot of politics behind this letter notice there's no mention of the word gezeiras giyus nor is it on Official Agudah stationary and no signatures like they did for Avi Schnall however and it came out 2 weeks after the gezeiirah but better late than never.

  5. Why did Avi Schnall get a stronger backing and support from Aguda vs the Geziras Giyus

  6. Pending the circumstances with the current moetzes this letter is a pretty strong statement against the IDF and Israeli government. It's a shame the Agudah as an organization is playing games and didn't go full blast and put it on the official stationary with the logo on top and in large.

  7. Missing the timing is simply willful head-in-the-sand syndrome.

At precisely when the government declared an active war on the learning of Torah is exactly when they war forced to surrender to the enemies.

It is clear that even 100 million IDF wouldn't help them us in our current situation. Only miracles and zechusim

  11. For those who don’t understand the Giyus law in Eretz Yisroel, there is a way to avoid doing direct combat and that is by civil service like volunteering in hospitals, etc. Yes, it will cause bitul Torah but I just wanted to explain the actual law.

    1. Absolutely false. The law as it stands says that every 18 year old needs to get drafted directly yo the army . There are all kinds of unofficial proposals ftom various people on the table but none of them have become the law and even if they did ,they would likely get thrown out by the Supreme Court for favoring one group over the other .

    2. Little has changed, but everybody on both sides needs this to be an issue as opposed to any other issue,so now it is

    3. Volunteering in hospitals is not Bitul Torah.
Do you want an Arab to do such work in hospitals? That's who's doing it now.

And there's an established system in place for such "volunteerism" for decades, called "Bituach Leumi"
And RYs are going to arrange such work for yeshivot (like work-study programs in US), only problem is -- no faking it, yeshivas in Israel don't know how to make legitimate programs.
