The lithium battery was not the cause of the explosion. It powered the device while receiving an advanced technology message that "awakened" the explosive.
Devices turned off or found in an area without reception did not explode.
Within 4 seconds of the beep sound of receiving the message, the device exploded whether the message was read or not.
