    1. My co-counsel in 2015 to 2018, who was not from Lakewood, said two things about Lakewood. 1) It does not matter what the newspapers say, and 2) public opinion does not matter.

The man was very smart. He said that you must present your case working backwards. Start with the order, verdict or whatever you want, then work your way backwards. When I look at my 2014 petition today and compare it to the amended version in 2018, you can see that wisdom of that advise. The 2018 pleadings were clear about what we wanted the judge to do and the facts and law provided the path for what we wanted from her (and it was easy at that point because we already presented our witnesses and already knew exactly where the road lead). One of the biggest problems of pro se or clients is that they have no clear vision of what the judge should do. They just want justice or to be vindicated. Judges don't solve problems. They hear two solutions, one from each side, and decide upon the solution that was able to best apply the facts to the law. Many of John Marshall's great opinions that created the America economy and way of life came from s'varos argued by (Senator) Daniel Webster, the lawyer in many of those cases. Gibbons (free trade), McCollough (sovereignty of US government), Dartmouth (birth of the modern corporation free from government control).

    1. The BOE doesn't understand their folly this year in denying me the summer school job that I had for almost two decades. I only get the biggest and most difficult legal work which by nature only comes in spurts. When it comes, like the federal case I just got, there are long intervals of time between work. Having a steady pay in the district, even as low as $50 an hour in the summer, does wonders to pacify resentment. By way of their illegal job retaliation, particularly when someone depends on the paltry pay, they gave me all day to drum up support against them, their boss, and the whole system of governance in Lakewood. Seems like everyone is on my side, including power brokers, but they can't do anything against the BOE, because of achdus and shalom, and the only way the relatively insignificant job action (a $50 an hour position?) might be remedied is by imploding the whole system.

America is a rough and individualistic country. Achdus, may be necessary in a minority kehilla, but not for majority group in large US city. It is counterproductive of the competition of leadership and ideas necessary for a dynamic large city to thrive.

Lakewood is no less rough and individualistic as anywhere else in America. The way people compete in business, s'varos, money, hiring/firing, is the same if not more competitive. The only difference is, in the one area that needs the most competition, politics. But in politics, we're told to have achdus and to show ha'karos ha'tov to incumbents. And the only way anything can changed or any problem can be properly addressed, is if every power broker agrees, which is near impossible in such with so many competing groups jealous of their own turf.

And in my case, when it seems that there are no losers, not the state, not other districts, not the kids, not the mosdos, not the politicians, not the taxpayers, not anyone; if Lakewood power brokers can't come together for consensus, because it means someone else is doing the job, then achdus was an illusion to begin with.
