Congressman Chris Smith announced that $3 million to address Lakewood’s traffic congestion and expand mental health services are closer to reality after it clears major hurdle in congress.
The average Lakewood resident may or may not gain much from this. There are several existing mental health facilities in Lakewood this money is only going to a specific one.
As for the millions to alleviate traffic the new roadways are going to be built on the newly acquired parcel of land on GCU property behind Forest Ave between 9th st and 14th st where 450 Apts will be built for yeshiva students whi h will help alliviate the housing crisis.

LAKEWOOD—$3,000,000 requested by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) to address serious traffic congestion and expand mental health services in Lakewood cleared a major hurdle in Congress this week as the House Appropriations Committee voted to advance legislation funding projects for the upcoming fiscal year to the House Floor.
The federal dollars championed by Smith include $2 million for the construction of two roads in the densely populated town as well as associated improvements, such as street lighting, sanitary sewer mains, drinking water mains and stormwater management infrastructure.
“Lakewood is one of the fastest growing cities in America and a growing economic engine for Ocean County, and there is an urgent need to lessen congestion on narrow streets that were designed and built in many cases over 100 years ago,” said Smith.
"The Lakewood Community Servicer Corporation, a non-profit community social service agency, is extremely grateful to our beloved Congressman Chris Smith for his assistance in procuring significant funding for an expanded mental health facility through the Community Project Funding program. This facility will greatly increase the LCSC’s capacity to provide quality outpatient mental health services to the greater Lakewood community,
which was especially hard hit during the recent pandemic. In securing this urgently needed funding, Congressman Smith continues to demonstrate his unparalleled concern for all his constituents and has followed through with bringing concrete and substantial results to his district." said Rabbi Moshe Zev Weisberg, President of the Lakewood Community Services Cooperation.“This federal support will help create a thoroughfare that drivers can use to overt excessively congested local roadways to get to Interstate 195, the Garden State Parkway and other highways,” Smith said.
Smith’s requested funds also include a separate $1 million for a new 5,000-square-foot mental health facility to expand outpatient mental health services provided by Lakewood Community Services Corporation (LCSC), including individual and family psychotherapy, group therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy.
“The rise in mental health issues across the country combined with the town’s surging population and the alarming surge in anti-Semitic attacks targeting the Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood have drastically increased the need for counseling and mental health assistance beyond the capacity of existing resources,” said Smith. “These federal dollars will go a long way toward ensuring that those who seek care can get access to mental health services and receive the support they need.”
Just last year, LCSC provided over 26,174 units of service, including telehealth, to over 1,500 unique patients—86 percent of whom were Medicaid insured or uninsured.
Passed by the House Appropriations Committee, the two appropriations bills containing the projects now await consideration by the full House of Representatives.
I don't understand.
ReplyDeleteWe voted for Chris Smith as a community. In return, he will arrange funding for a large building, in order that LCSC will make more money. How does the average voter gain from this building that will be built? Will mental health services be cheaper for him? Will he have easier access to a counselor?
And this road is for people who don't even live here yet. Those who live here, those who voted for Smith, gain nothing from this grant.
The ones who own these are Lakewood Vaad members when they meet with elected officials they have the wink wink game. The conversation starts why should you earn our vote than the needs of the community are brought up and the politician gives the wink wink to deliver the goods. In return they promise to deliver the bloc vote and they begin a campaign of letters by Roshei yeshiva how we must vote for so and so because he listened to our concerns
DeleteThat is how the game is played.
If there was any accountability and transparency no vaad member should have a say if they get funding.
But that's the whole point of the Vaad. Each member runs (or ran) an institution that relys heavily on government funding.
DeleteIf they did it as volunteers and didn't take a penny that's one thing but if they are profiting off it that's another story
DeleteWhich Mosad does Mr LCSC run?
DeleteIf it doesn't improve current traffic woes then this is worthless
ReplyDeleteMental health and congestion. Never thought of it in the same sentence...
ReplyDeleteRead all pork bills they throw in money like water for pet projects. The question is would these funds go to other projects or be happy that lakewood is getting it
ReplyDeleteSolve the traffic problems and you cure most of the mental health issues.
ReplyDeleteChris Smith should know better and come down to talk to his constituents in Lakewood directly in Town Square or the pizza shops local parks and
ReplyDeletesupermarkets to hear their concerns not meet VIP style with self appointed activists who claim to represent the community.
The askanim tell him
ReplyDeleteThanks for shedding light on the real story here. Will not be voting for him in the general…
ReplyDeleteDoes Chris Smith live in the district?
ReplyDeleteHas he no idea of route 9 and the traffic that goes on?
He's the longest serving member of congress he should know better to fix route 9.
Please correct me if I am wrong. The Yeshiva buys land from GC and will build student housing on the site. The Federal government will pay for roads to connect the apartments from Ninth St. to Fourteenth St. And this will cure Lakewood's traffic problems like Route 9, which should have been widened fifty years ago.
ReplyDeletehow do you know the roads the money is for are in gcu? it doesn't say that anywhere in the press release.
ReplyDeleteIt says the new road will help the Olam get to the 195 and GSP
