  1. while that "askan" has a point, it's laughable to say those numbers. My combined family income after taxes is less than half of that, living paycheck to paycheck, yet I'm able to figure out how to pay tuition.
Another point, what does a lakewood school, where most of the parent body isn't making anywhere near that amount think of that equation? Somehow the parents are figuring it out.
It isn't easy in any way, but you have to figure out how to make it work. Life is expensive.

    1. The problem is that people think tuition is on bottom it should be on top, everyone in this town thinks that tuition and everything else will be served to them people don't realize that you need to work for yourself same reason why we don't take free money you don't want to take charity guess what this is CHARITY!!!!!!!!!!

    2. The issue he is saying is for people that don’t own their house from pre covid. Anyone buying now anywhere near Lakewood, and is paying 7% mortgage, needs to expend on housing costs 80k(he said 96k but that’s in Monsey for a 4br house). Do the math now and explain how someone making 150k can afford it. And once you make more then you have the next 20k for health insurance. And full, full tuition. Unless you can explain how you are managing on 150k these comments are a disservice. And separately, even if you have a house, when it comes time for weddings and down payments for the kids, you better hope some solution is thought of so I’d suggest people stop commenting how they are managing on their 2% mortgage and public assistance.

    3. Can you please letoeles horabim elaborate on how you survive on 150k before taxes with 5 children and still pay tuition?

    4. Many people have tuition bills for 7,8,9 kids. As the family grows expenses balloon such as camp, braces, therapy, rabbeim ( father getting home too late to learn either boys) , bar mitzvahs, weddings, support of married kids. 300k may sound like a lot to a younger family and they can get away with less and still cover their tuition obligations. But as the family grows people in the 300k income bracket will struggle immensely to make it. Tuition for Bais Midrash yeshivas or dorming is around 20k per kid! ( BMG IS MORE!) Families have three or more at a time! 150k is ok for a younger family or a family who gets breaks or govt support but for an older family who is expected to pay everything in full because earning 350k means you are rich (big joke)! Vacations or country homes (without parental help) is a far off dream and making tuition payments are extremely difficult- as is making it in general. A large frum family needs at least 500k to get by and breath a little ( not even luxury).

    5. Tuition is never actually $20k per kid. Only when someone is making an illegitimate profit. The 'reduction' people receive isn't tzedakah.

And BMG doesn't actually charge it. The government pays it, so they charge it. The price of a bochur in BMG is negligible. True tuition should be about $3k per year.

    6. I currently have three boys in an out of town mesivta and pay 20k per son. Many people get reductions but the ones that don’t carry the the class. And no we aren’t rich and it isn’t easy for us. We cannot give more for the dinner or fundraisers on top of that. Don’t think school is making a profit at all, they actually pay the rabbeim well run a dorm etc… we also have one son in a local yeshiva Bais medrash age in a dorm and pay 17k straight up. And these yeshivas are barely making it no nice building….most of the parent body cannot pay full which is understandable. BMG charges an insane amount because they can get fasfa funds as a college but for those who don’t qualify for fasfa have a huge tuition burden. Which brings us back to the middle bracket, earning too much for reductions or govt assistance but really finding it very hard to make ends meet. Hashem should bentch us all with enough to fulfill all our obligations and to carry the burden of those that cannot.

    7. I didn't say Yeshivos don't charge these amounts. Just that it doesn't cost that much, you are paying for something other than tuition.

    1. Who are you to say so? Many people live in small homes and have old used cars and buy clothing and food on sale, and still cannot afford to pay for the many required expenses such as tuition, camp, and local seminaries! Everything is tremendously expensive and is unaffordable when you have more than a few children.

    2. That's not who they are talking abt. They said "90k for mortgage etc".
      That's not a small house.

    3. Because a mortgage of 8k and 1.5k for cars and 1k for food is not small homes and used cars and food on sale. I was addressing the budget that he was talking about. Next time read and comprehend before lashing out.

    4. A house that costs 750k with 5% down these days will end up costing, after utilities, mortgage and tax. A used minivan financed will cost around 400 a month, plus insurance so around 1k, add gas for 1k miles each and add 400. So around 1400 for a user minivan. I’m wondering if the original commenter gets his housing and car covered by the Shver?

  9. Simple numbers are
    48k for house
    25k for food
    3k car
    5k clothes
    16k tuition (5 kids bargain)
    Insurance 10 k bargain
These are simple numbers for family of 5 and almost didn't pay for basics and need 110k in pocket after taxes and here you are living well below poverty and have no money even to make simple bar mitzva or give teduka

  10. With a gross income of $300,000 and expenses as indicated, federal taxes should be around $35,000 or so. Not $75,000.
