Faa: On Monday morning, Lakewood committee members gathered indoors at Town Hall for the annual menorah lighting ceremony, speaking to the community and celebrating the holiday. But when it came to their swearing-in ceremony, those same officials chose to remain behind screens, opting for a virtual event instead. The decision to hold the menorah lighting in person while avoiding an in-person swearing-in has drawn sharp criticism from residents who feel the move reflects skewed priorities.“They’re happy to show up for a public celebration indoors, but when it comes to facing the public for an official event, they retreat to their computers,” said Sarah Johnson, a frustrated local resident. “It’s a slap in the face to the people they’re supposed to represent.”

ReplyDeleteLakewood is not affordable for kollel guys and even the middle working class the town has become affordable only for the uber rich
ReplyDeletePeople are moving out of existing neighborhoods like coventry Chestnut to other towns. It is no longer a town that for bnei Torah.
Thanks to all those who did this you reap what you sew.
Who cares if bnei torah don't live in Lakewood? What so special about the city of Lakewood, or BMG, that we need to prop it up?
DeleteGreed and corruption

Anything establishment bad! Anything Anti-establishment good!
DeletePerhaps it's time to see the Yad Hashem in this and the benefits of it.
Is there any locale in golus which has stayed the same?? Brownsville? East New York? The Lower East Side?
Boro Park? From farmland to an eventual Torah community. Eventually went Chasiddish. And then the chasiddish youngsters started moving out. Based on the current trajectory, what will it look like in a few years?
As other places.only Rich or toadies or old or remnants left on the side
DeleteWhy didn't the committee men appoint members to the Rent Control Board? Don't they care to settle all the fights going on in town between the landlords and their tenants??
ReplyDeleteMaterialism is a replacement for real meaning in life. I Suspect why people are Starting to wake up to it now is because they are used to having all the materialism, now that there is so much inflation they are in pain. And they're looking for a way out. Let's be realistic it's not like we've gotten fancier in the last few years it's just that it's much more expensive....... And we don't have the willpower to control ourselves unless we make some sort of community wide rules....
ReplyDeleteThis is incorrect. Materlailisim has skyrocketed over the past few years. Just a few years ago, a vachtnacht was a time when kids said Shma and got a peckel. An upsheren was some pecklech to the kids in class of the rebbe who read with the kid. This is just two examples of lots and lots of money being blown 'lshaim Shomayim'. There are too many more to go through it.
DeleteWhy are lakewood taxpayers paying for these volunteer organizations that also serve Jackson and Toms River
ReplyDeleteIs the free gas only for the trucks in Lakewood
does chaveirim ot hatzolah not go into Jackson howell etc..
Let those towns pay
The idea that Citifield style assifos are the solution to problems is strange.
ReplyDeleteWhen it came to Internet/Smartphone usage, those that attempted to force a certain standard on society were stymied by the splits in society. They figured that a group undertaking would push those standards. Were they successful? Maybe, it's still hard to tell.
But regarding materialism, when we are attempting to educate people, not adopt a standard, assifos are just a distraction.
Each person can work on himself. A poor person can refrain from buying a coffee in a store as opposed to making one at home. A more well-to-do person can refrain from replacing a car because it's 'old'. People can buy cheaper clothing and accessories, teaching themselves and their children that life isn't about objects. And rich people can use their money to better society, paying workers a higher wage, giving more tzedaka to more organizations (and withholding donations from the unnecessary and phoney organitzations), and hiring local for more of their needs.
But these decisions are all personal, there is no place for national standards.
It's worthwhile to listen to the whole speech. He was not suggesting an asifa about spending within your means. This wasn't another "we are spending to much money" speech. The asifa was regarding the "level 4" which starts at minute 25.

DeleteGottheimer is the askanims choice and he has a friend in Avi Schnall. They will try to cover up his liberal pro toeva voting record to fool the Lakewood andJewish community by touting his pro israel advocacy
ReplyDeleteMotza min es mino.
DeleteThe corruption is a holdover for when the town was small and everything revolved around the yeshiva. At that time a bloc vote made sense to get services that benefit everyone as time went on and Lakewood outgrew the yeshiva the needs for residents also grew but the system stayed the same only benefiting a select few. They are still holding on to power abusing the bloc vote and using govt funds and grants for their own projects instead of sharing it for the needs of the entire community. The old vaad system has been exploited by well connected to help themselves why they have the chutzpah to abuse our votes and tell us how important it is to vote so we can get more funding from Trenton which they end up diverting for themselves denying the taxpayers a better and safer quality of life
