Minhag to Give Gelt on the 5th Night of Chanukah

There is a minhag to give Chanukah gelt to your children and to the poor on the fifth night of Chanukah. The simple reason since the 5th night never falls out on shabbos. Another reason that the nasie of the 5th day is from shevet Shimon who will produce the Rebbeim to teach the children.

  3. To clarify:
    There are 2 minhagim:
    1. To give zedakah on Chanukah. By definition zedakah is money given to needy people.
    2. To give money to the children’s teachers - Rabeim (and morahs).
Zedakah is usually given all nights.
Chanukah felt to the family ( if that’s your minhag) is given on the fifth night.

    3. Egregiously untrue. The minhag to give more to anyim on Chanuka is a long time minhag mentioned in halcha. I wasn't looking for them but just yesterday I happened to have seen a reason for giving chanuka gelt to children given by the Ponivtcher Rav in the Dirshu Misha Brura. Rav Menasha Klein in his sefer on chanuka brings down other reasons as well. It's safe to say they weren't influenced by the Santa culture. Some of the sources R'MK mentions predate Santa
