Cicadas Begin Emerging From Underground

Those noisy Brood X cicadas are on the way, expected to crawl up from the ground — where they have been hanging out for 17 years — and flock to the nearest trees. Brood X cicadas are appearing in 15 states and jurisdictions: Delaware, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The brood will emerge in large quantities, covering surfaces en masse and emitting the sounds of a nonstop lawnmower.

See list of NJ towns were cicadas were previously reported.  in Ocean county they were seen in Colliers Mill, New Egypt, Prospertown in 1902.
