Flashback: What The Vaad Said About Taxes

Article from 11 years ago still relevant

As elections are here there's alot of distraction of the real issues facing Lakewood residents such as Traffic Taxes and quality of life. In the last 10 years property taxes have gone up a shocking 70% and continue going up with over 200 million owed to the state that will have to be repaid. So where does the Lakewood Vaad stand on it? it seems that nothing has changed since 10 years ago.

An Article in Hamodia dated November 2013 by a  Vaad spokesman states, there is no real frustration in the kehilla regarding rising property taxes.” Weisberg says that the Vaad is “very pleased that the great vast majority did as was suggested” and dismissed, as “not serious analysis,” the notion that there is real frustration among the kehillah in regard to rising property taxes.

He also says that taxes, although nobody likes them, “aren’t going away — that’s the way it is. If you don’t pay taxes, you don’t get the services.”

Those who pay taxes are not only frustrated they are MAD. This year Lakewood Township raised the municipal budget taxes by 8 million while also giving out tax abatements in the value of 6 million and the politicians all raised their salaries while Lakewood taxpayers are left footing the bill.

The only candidate on the ballot who addressed this issue and will do what it takes to stop it, is Moshe Raitzik

Urgent Election Message

As many of you know, I have litigated for change in the school funding formula for over a decade. B’zchus ha’rabbim the Court has found that our district is underfunded, effectively making Lakewood what is called an Abbott district. I urge all citizens to vote for the Fixing the Formula candidates for the Lakewood Board of Education on the top three rows of the school board section of the ballot.

Fixing the formula will IY”H stabilize our public finances into the next century. Fixing the formula will bring more funding to help all the students in the district and alleviate transportation costs. Fixing the formula will enable us to build an infrastructure of opportunity and an engine of growth for all of Lakewood.

By way of example, currently, Newark with 54,000 K-12 students receives $944 million in state equalization aid. Lakewood, with roughly the same number of students, receives $15 million in state equalization aid. The discrepancy is because the funding formula does not count the tremendous amount of nonpublic school students for whom the district is mandated to provide transportation and special education services, costing about $100 million a year.

To make up for the shortage in aid, last year the BOE borrowed from the state $100 million, increasing our total debt to $300 million. To put that in perspective, since our entire school tax levy is just $100 million, the encumbrance upon every taxable property in Lakewood is three times the school tax of a single year. There is no end in sight to this mess.

Why does who serves on the BOE matter? The BOE takes care of a $400 million budget. Most of your local taxes go to the BOE.

The “Fixing the Formula” candidates support our court victory. There is still work that must be done as the litigation continues.

Please vote for Avrohom Schubert, Mordechai Lang, and Eli Eisenbach, dedicated to fixing the school funding formula and working for the students and taxpayers.

However, there is a shita of Reb Yaakov Kaminetzky ztl who  that the Minhag not to take a haircut on Friday only applies to a one day Rosh Chodesh. Then there is an option to take a haircut on Thursday, which is still considered L’kovid Shabbos. When Rosh Chodesh is two days, taking a haircut Wednesday would not be considered in honor of Shabbos. In that case Reb Yaakov held one could and should take the haircut on Friday, the second day of Rosh Chodesh.

A Few Tips for the Gabbai about Hagaba on Sefer Breishis

(Reposted)
Dear Gaabai, Please make sure that Hagba during these weeks is performed in a way that is proper kavod haTorah and shouldn't give anyone in shul, heart failure. There's been too many close calls where people near the bima end up catching the sefer.

As we read the parshios of Breishis  the sefer Torah is rolled  that the left side is heavier making it harder for a righty to lift up during Hagbah. The newer sifrei Torah are lighter but older sifrei torah  are heavier.

The Mishna Berura writes that Hagbah should be given to someone who has the strength to lift and turn the Torah without needing to sit immediately. If one knows they do not have the strength to do it properly they should decline the honor. Although generally one should not turn down an invitation for an Aliyah, we don’t find this with Hagbah, albeit the greater honor.
 A Few important tips:

 1) Please whoever is performing Hagbaa ask them if they have the strength and technique to lift the sefer Torah. Try giving to lefty's or able bodied men.

2) Gelilah should also be given to someone with knowledge to immediately secure the atzei chaim and begin rolling the sefer Torah

3) Very important for the Gabbai to stand nearby within an arms length until after gelilah is done.

Thank You
K. H.

Lakewood November Elections

Early voting is underway localy Lakewood has 2 seats up for election on the township committee and 3 seats on the BOE
The good news is that Lakewood voters have choices at this year's ballot.
R' Moshe Raitzik is running as a republican for a seat on the Township Committee.
R' Moshe currently serves on the Board of Education, and he previously served on the Planning Board until this year when he was swapped by the Township Committee in favor of Yechiel Herzel.
Importantly, R' Moshe has a proven track record of fighting for "how can we do this even better."

A vote for Moshe Raitzik for Lakewood Township Committee is truly a vote for the taxpayer. Faanews.

The incumbents for township committee  didnt  have the decency to reach out to the Lakewood community pre election.

The needs of the kehilla and quality of life are continuously ignored to a point where people have given up and are told to just accept the reality or move away.  Yet they call themselves representatives of the entire town. Any opposition is quashed in the name of not keeping the "Achdus" .

Alot went on over the past few years and there's been not a peep out of anyone besides for some election time articles, puff pieces and PR through their controlled media outlets.

Are you happy the way the township committee is still in covid mode hiding from the public by meeting on zoom once a month for 10 minutes while the mayor speed reads a few emails of public commen denying any criticism or interactions from the public?

Are you ok that municipal taxes alone went up this year by 8 million after raising it by 4 million last year?

Are you OK with the committee  giving out over 7 million on tax breaks and abatements to corperations just this year while the taxpayers are left with the bill to pay the lost revenue

Are you ok with a committee that voted themselves a huge salary increase of 20k while raising taxes on you to pay for it

Are you ok with having your bloc vote abused by the same few always getting the public funding allocated for Lakewood and not filtering the money down to the needs of the residents and infrastructure

Are you ok with the attitude of always shifting blame on the county and state but taking no responsibility after being in office for over 20 years

Do you enjoy the traffic now  some predict it will soon become one big parking lot

There's an opportunity for change see below on candidate Moshe Raitzik

Lakewood BOE Member Moshe Raitzik Pursues Township Committee Seat with Focus on Transparent Growth and Public Safety

Moshe Raitzik, a Lakewood Board of Education member, is running as a Republican for a seat on the Township Committee, determined to bring a fresh perspective to the town’s leadership. Drawing from years of public service and community involvement, including a five-year tenure on the Planning Board and a long career as an educator, Raitzik is campaigning on a platform of transparent governance, responsible growth, and enhanced public services. His goal is to ensure Lakewood residents have more input in decision-making processes that impact their everyday lives.

Biography from Israel media
