- NJ Globe reports: A hugely influential member of the Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood is exploring a run for State Assembly in the 30th district as a Democrat against Republican incumbents Sean Kean (R-Wall) and Ned Thomson (R-Wall). Avi Schnall,  the director of the New Jersey office of Agudath Israel of America and a staunch advocate for non-public school students, is preparing to take a leave of absence from his post in advance of the March 27 filing deadline to see if he can flip an Ocean/Monmouth legislative district that has been solidly Republican since its origin in 1991.There are 26,5551 more Republicans than Democrats in the 30th district – a 39%-19% edge, with 41% of the voters unaffiliated with either party – but the ability of the Orthodox community in Lakewood, Howell and Wall to split their ticket creates an interesting opportunity for Democrats. A new scientific review suggests that widespread masking may have done little to nothing to curb the transmission of COVID-19.
The review, titled "Physical interventions to interrupt or reduce the spread of respiratory viruses," was led by 12 researchers from esteemed universities around the world.
Published by Cochrane Library, the review dug into the findings of 78 randomized controlled trials to determine whether "physical interventions" — including face masks and hand-washing — lessened the spread of respiratory viruses. Fox

High school issue explained:  submitted via comments
When houses were going for 500,000 why are we in bidding wars to give the goyim a million ? Why don't all buyers band together and say enough is enough and we won't give in to this price gouging and only pay a fair price ? In reality that's is what should be. But people don't think about the klal . They need a house so they say ,I'll pay whatever it takes to have a house and it's not my problem if that raises the prices way above what they should be .

Same here . This school put out the noise that this year there will be a big shortage of slots . They hyped that up and got parents very nervous . Then they gave parents a 24 hour ultimatum. Either take our offer or risk your daughter being on the street. The parents didn't even have the chance of getting interviews or answers from other schools but they went into panic mode . The other schools are all disgusted by this one school and asked the parents not to cave in and so are the elementary school principals . but nobody was willing to tell parents to risk having their daughter with no slot. So the elementary school principals put tremendous pressure on the other schools to give answers quickly even before the interviews and some schools caved to the pressure and also started demanding answers from parents and then some sent out acceptance letters . So the system totally broke . Once there is panic in the streets , unless you have a tight kehila structure like by Chasidim , you can't prevent parents from taking care of their kids or buyers taking care of their housing needs.in both cases ,it destroys our society one in ruchniyos and one in gashmius but panic creates bad things.

As far as the Vaad , the only thing the Vaad had going for it in past years was a certain level of trust between the schools and a certain level of the machanchos of each school caring about the big picture of trying as best as they could to help all the girls. It wasn't a perfect system but with all its faults ,it worked for the most part. Nobody had to give answers until the interviews were done and all acceptance letters went out at a mutually agreed upon date . Now that this school has destroyed the trust between the schools , there will be no cooperation because every school just assumes that this school will just do what it wants and the system is over . It will actually be much worse than the mesivtas going forward because of the tight space and other reasons.

As far asthe Vaad I don't think it was an ultimatum. It was simply throwing up their hands and stating a fact that they no longer had the schools cooperating with each other ,because the other schools felt very wronged and taken advantage of by this action and without cooperation the Vaad hs no power and its like the mesivta system.

In short you are technically right. I'm theory if all patents would have told that school that we will not give in to intimidation and terror tactics and they all banded together and said that ,then this woukd not have happened. But the same can be said fir the housing prices . When sellers started raising prices because of the crazy bidding wars ,if all buyers woukd have banded together and said we are not going to pay raise insane orices ,then Lakewood woukd stillbe affordable for Bnai Torah. But since there are always those that don't think about the ramifications to the klal, we have panic in school acceptances and housing prices . Same concept.

  1. Sorry but the lomdes her is farkrumpt. The housing market is so imbalanced with demand being tens of times more than supply that you cannot expect der gantze velt including 60-70 year old grandparents from Toronto or Brooklyn (with homes worth 1-3 M) not to pay to be near their kids so your spoiled 24 year old daughter can get her ''dream house''? How do you compare materialism to education? Nor vos? You can have a taina on 100 Roshei Mosdos much more than on 30000 couples looking for nicer. newer. or better priced homes/investments for them or their family members. Why? If you look at a child from a perspective of how it will affect your Moisad instead of thinking how you can affect that child than the Moisad becomes another investment which is what the first 99 Roshei Mosdos have shown. hundreds of kids sit at home for months every year waiting for answers - ''but they all get accepted'' - but waiting while all their friends (and I am talking about entering elementary too) have school is Achzoryes she-ein leshaer!

    2. The response of 9:54 AM of ridiculing and degrading someone else's thoughts are wrong. Is this intended to make the vaad look better? I hope that no member of the vaad ever spoke to a parent in this sort of way.

  3. Der oilam does not chap the growth in this town. Everyone is looking for their own opportunities. Housing is done there are more buyers. should they not buy? Should we make a goral like section 8 and the rest will stay in basements?? There is a land called Eretz Yisroel where Hashem promised there will be space for us. when 300000 people will live here in 15 years do you think the roads will be better. Schools will be easier? Homes will be cheaper? it will take an hour to get your kids to Yeshiva

  5. The comparison is odious.

People buying houses are private individuals. How should they think about the Klal when that is not their job, their focus, or realm of understanding? The Menahalos of the schools, otoh, are part of the Klal system, they knew exactly what they were doing. They are not as excusable.

    1. so you decided that private schools are klal but families are Individual? Just because you arent involved in the klal means you never have to care about the klal? How about because you NEVER do any klal work think about the klal for once when your buying a house?? Sounds like we have a bunch of fellas over here excusing their home purchase!

    2. The menahalos of all the existing schools are Noshim tzidkoniyos. They had nothing to do with this and they are crying about the matzav . It is one school that is controlled by an individual who is not a menaheles . In the schools that previously cooperated, the menahalos have a strong say in things and never did anything like this. It is unfair to blame menahalos for something they are crying about

    3. I don't think anybody said students are like houses. The question was why didn't parents band together and not give in to the pressure and terrorism of a school that needs them . If they had banded together ,this would never had happened. It was just meant to give a moshol that once there is panic , without a central authority ,people do not band together for anything ,they just grab what they can get for fear of losing out.

    4. Where did you see anywhere in that comment ,excusing the haschoso of what that school did ? It's not excusable. The comment was explaining why parents panicked to accept slots even if they really wanted to wait to hear from other schools like every year.

  7. By houses one can always get the next one, or live somewhere until the "perfect" one comes along. Not so with schools.

  8. In many ways the vaad was a problem. They played sudoku and placed kids in slots, many times in schools that were not a good match. Some schools were forced to take a certain element of girls that hurt the character of the school. The vaad clapped their backs and took credit for finding every girl a slot. That should not be the goal. The goal is every girl in an appropriate slot. Too many girls were turned away from their school of choice because they were granted a seat by another school that they did not belong in, because they were forced to apply to 4 schools by the vaad. I believe that in the end, the demise of the Vaad will be a good thing. More elementary schools will open high schools. Girls will be able to focus on the school that's best for them. The issue of not enough seats is one remaining problem, that can only be solved by the elementary schools, and the collapse of the vaad will force that. Too many parents and schools relied on the vaad finding "every" girl a school.

    1. Very well said! Thank you for recognizing that! Too many people cast judgement on parents saying that they weren't realistic. Parents were realistic and the vaad just dumped kids in empty seats. There were way to many karbonos due to that!

    2. You sound like a very wise man. So please give me your plan. If there are 2000 8th graders needing a place and there are only a small number of schools with 1800 slots with normal class sizes. And some schools were willing to stuff their classes to almost 50 so no girl should be left out. And then 100 parents feel that the only appropriate school for them are those stuffed schools which can't even fit a fly in their classroom and there are other schools that these parents won't deem appropriate .Even assuming the parent is right . Then please make believe you are the new Daas Torah or eitzes geber. What will you advise these parents ? To keep their kids at home ? Send them to NY schools? Come up with a few million dollars to open up a new appropriate school that may or may not be successful and considered appropriate. Please we are anxiously waiting for your solution?

  12. It's really ironic. All the girls high schools are officially private and can do what they want. Yet practically they defer mostly to the Ehrlich women mechanchos who lead the chinuch of the schools. The one school that is officially a kehilla school that was founded by the kehilla and run by a board on behalf of the kehilla , is officially not a private school. Yet in practice, all the chosuve members of the board were pushed out and 2 people run the school as if it's their private kingdom without giving any thought to what the mechaneches or public or Daas Torah says . In reality ,this real kehila school is more private than the private schools. The private schools each have some Daas Torah and definitely rely on the mechanchos for most chinuch decisions ,while the supposed Kehila school does whatever these 2 private individuals want without regard for anybody else. Fir fund raising purposes ,they can raise huge sums by claiming that they ate the only true kehila school ,but the reality is just the opposite

What an upside down world we have here .

  14. Reb shloima yehuda rechnitz was right its a man made problem.Rabbonim of shuls who work very hard to get children in schools say that the problem stems from the establishment who are not lemalach and get their way. There is no touro college or chabad yeshiva in lakewood because that is the will of the establishment .The same is true about children not getting into schools and when rechnitz tried to help and offered to finance consruction of new schools and staff he was booted from lakewood by the same "helpless'" establishment.

  15. I wish to mention something

There is no such thing as a private school. Even if a school received no government funds, did not fundraise and received no tax exemptions on its property, it still would not be considered a private school. Kal sheken when every single school takes something from the public.
When a service is done in public, it must take the public into account when acting. Just like a person may not establish a 'private' Shul, and then forbid someone from entering (Cherem Derabbenu Gershom), the same makes sense with a school. If they have rules, they must make sense, they can't just hide behind 'private school'.

    2. Kol Yisroel Areivim doesn't mean that a person does not have to look out for himself and his family first.
But public figures, people who live off the public dime, and people who have institutions that affect the public, may not act like that. They owe the public to act in the public's interest.

  16. As a resident of Lakewood for over 40 years, I would like to point out that once upon a time, each school had its own mehalech and people sent to the school that was a good fit for their families. Now no school can keep to its own mehalech because, in the end, each school has to admit girls who don't have a school to go to. If the school tries to keep to a certain crowd, it is considered elitist. And in the current situation it would be cruel to stick to a certain crowd and not accept these unfortunate neshamos. Who in the world wants to open a school in this kind of atmosphere?! Once the school is opened, it practically has no say in the kind of school it wants to be. Of course the schools can't really be a private school.

    1. How can a school who wants 30 in 2 classes and ends up with 45 per class in 4 or 5 classes be called elitist ? What do you want them to do? Put 75 in a class and then they won't be elitist ?

  18. Every year, when someone wants to open a school, he needs to kowtow to the Va'ad. That is why nobody wants to open a school.

This year is a perfect year for people to show the Va'ad their middle finger and open a school as they wish.

    To summarize:
No reason to panic, although some kids won't get in this year. But all you have to do is apply pressure and use protektzia, and all will be fine.

I think a better idea would be to write 'Calm Down and say Na Nach'

  21. If there is a real problem of kids not getting into high school, that means at least 60/70 kids. Then the best thing just happened. We'll know how many kids didn't get in and someone would be able to open a new school for all those rejected, (we're always told that these girls are the cream of thecrop just with no pull) and the problem would be solved once and for all
