New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s tweets last night about a large funeral that took place in Williamsburg, Brooklyn created a maelstrom of protest. They gave the impression that he saw the Jewish community, in particular, as flouting rules of social distancing in this challenging time.
The mayor expressed regret this morning for the way his words were taken. We agree with that sentiment. No matter how well-intentioned the Mayor might be, words that could be seized upon by bigots and anti-Semites must be avoided at all costs.
The Jewish community as a whole, and the Orthodox Jewish community in particular, are heeding social distancing rules, including at funerals. In fact, weeks ago, Agudath Israel shared clear guidelines for funerals and burials developed by the National Association of Chevra Kadisha (NASCK); guidelines that were patently violated by last night’s funeral.
While we at Agudath Israel keenly understand the deep grief over the loss of a beloved leader, the health and safety of our community, neighbors, and that of our dedicated law enforcement officers must always be our highest priority.
Ver hut say gebeten Tzvi redden????
ReplyDeleteThey forgot to mention that the mayor had approved this funeral plan and that the NYPD set up for it.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at the videos of the levayah they were wearing masks & social distancing, however in many many cases a whole family was there & they don't have to social distance from each other, so it seemed as if they were violating SD, but the areilim don't realize how many the zechorim of one big mishpocha.
ReplyDeleteI am surprised no one seems to have made this point. The families were social distancing from each other.
Do they really think chareidim are so dense that while attending a levayah, they would cause others Chas veshalom?
guidelines that were patently violated by last night’s funeral.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the point of that line. This statement is apologetic and chastised the chasidim
The Novominsker Gadols passing has truly left a great void.

ReplyDeleteThey should have never Made a large Levaya in the first place even with Permission from the NYPD who I am sure they pressured and Fardreid a Kup with a few connected Askonim and Machers.....there is no need for a large Levaya in Middle of a Pandemic family members and 10 people are enough...it was good enough for the Novominsker Rebbe and other Rabbonim and Roshei Yeshivos...
ReplyDeleteWhile you are certainly entitled to your esteemed opinion - which may be valid - it is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. The mayor's tweeet was dangerous and anti-Semitic. Period. It required a real response. Period. Muddying the waters in this public letter with your mussar to this shul is dangerous and may make things worse.
DeleteI agree 100%
DeleteThe kuntz is to put out a statement before the apology when the story was hot not when the story got old
ReplyDeleteAguda had no problem with a statement attacking Trump he did not get the same White glove treatment as Blas
the point of the statement , is that the press should understand that WE ( agudah) is not THEM ( willy)
ReplyDeleteAgudah threw willy under the bus even though it was approved by the nypd.
ReplyDeleteThis is achdus? Do chasidim have no right to mourn according to their standards?
There should be a apology from agudah to klal yisrael for such a divisive and attacking statement
Double standard
ReplyDeleteagudah not issue the same statement when lakewood vaad arranged to have weddings in middle of a pandemic no one else had weddings was it not a chilul hashem that the entire country cant host weddings but the yidden have a different set of rules. Oh it was also approved by the cops just like the funeral..
Stulovics levaya was impeded by the Agudah politicians not the Cops
