Rav Chaim Kanievsky saying selichos early this morning
Selochos in Sanz outdoors due to Corona
Many wonder, is nothing sacred anymore? Selichos which for centuries had klal yisrael approach it with fear and trepidation as the preperation for the yemei hadin has now turned into full blown concerts and kumzits style events. The Piyut says זוחלים ורועדים we tremble and shiver as we beg Hashem to forgive us. The frum Jewish websites made sure to broadcast and post videos of these new selichos concerts. As if they were trying to one up each other by who could post the crazier newer hip selichos prayer. They couldnt portray what selichos looks like in a regular normal shul the way it always was.
ReplyDeletePerhaps these concerts is the only way people feel they can connect and feel close to hashem as it says לשמוע אל הרינה ואל התפילה. Not until the emergence of the Carlebach style selichos has there ever been this phenomenon in previous generations. Truth many shuls had chazonim who would lead the service but it was not in the form of a musical happy concert. It was a soul stirring prayer in a serious atmosphere. Maybe this is what the dor needs but defenitely not the norm.
Deletesad
These parties are geared for and attended mostly by the very spirituality needy. For these people this is all they have and for them, having these concerts is better than not having them.
DeleteThe traditional solemn selichos are still far more popular.
I am not getting involved in the question if we're better off not having these things at all, that's for דעת תורה.
The frum websites have devolved to being just click bait for ad revenue, they have lost any legitimacy
You are right !
ReplyDeleteThese concerts are a massive Chilul Hashem !
They can easily make the concert Sunday Night !
Why ruin a holy night
This is typical man bites dog journalism the empty shalloW frum news sites will glorify any deviance for clicks and hits. They care about the bottom line and use clickbate content to get traffic. Mainstream orthodoxy means nothing to these shallow editors
ReplyDeleteCheck out the lkwd scoop twitter tantrums today
DeleteTls pretending to go woke and progressive to appease the online left modox crowd and shake off the lakewood stigma. Dumb shallow and childish
DeleteI think the rebbes are at fault they started the trend of yiddishe concerts and musical events with weddings and tishin and the non affiliated people are adapting to the new style of yiddishkeit in their own way
ReplyDeleteIndeed, very very sad.
ReplyDeleteTo the ppl who say that they need Hisorerus, so that’s why they need a guitar: why do you need Selichos altogether?? Just bring a guitar, turn off the lights, sing Carlebach and that’s it!
This is an utter Chilul Hashem, and although not necessarily against Halacha, it is has nothing to do with our Mesorah. It is a fringe concept, nothing more nothing less. Remember, Reform Judaism started this way, when a few individuals decided to live their life in a way that “works for them”, instead of clinging to our Mesorah.
Another point worth noting: Selichos is NOT about hisorerus. Yes it’s good to be Nesorer during the Selichos, but that’s not the point at all. The Rishonim were Mesaken Selichos based on the words of Chazal, and incorporated the Yud Gimmel middos of Hashem which have the power to be Meorer awesome Rachamim. As such, all those ppl out there begging for “Hisorerus” are completely missing the boat. And let’s be honest: nobody ever became a better person spiritually after attending a “romantic” Selichos in the dark with a guitar.
המקום ירחם עלינו ועל שארית עמו בית ישראל ויקוים בנו ומלאה הארץ דעה את ה׳ וכו׳
Correct there is no need to publicize and broadcast in Frum Magazines and websites all these " New Selichos and Concerts"
ReplyDeleteWhy tempt the new young generation of children growing up..that they should grow up thinking that Selichos Conserts are the Norm and Mainstream
For those who go ..it is a free country ..no one can stop you ..however do it quietly for yourselves no need to entice young people growing up who would otherwise attend the regular Traditional Selichos that their Fathers and Grandfathers went to
The frum media has evolved into garbage tabloids instead of filtering they post trash.
ReplyDeleteBP had 7 hachnosas.. not 17
ReplyDeleteOne thing I know for sure is that Yidden talking in such a nasty way about other Yidden, is not the way we should be behaving during Selichos or at any other time of the year. If we disagree with the way other people do something, we can say so without calling names and without being mean. If we truly want to achieve the goal of being misorrer Rachmei Shamayim, berating our fellow Yidden in such negative ways is not the way to achieve that goal. We can disagree without putting other people down.
ReplyDeleteWhen our mesorah is threatened we dont play nice we fight back and get nasty if needed.
DeleteMaybe what is threatened is your tolerance of anything or anyone who doesn't think look or act exactly like you. Try being "old" not married and thus not wearing a shatel and being stared at by children. Or laughed at. But no then we're all supposed to judge favorably and no one hears. Blames the innocent
DeleteWe are living in a different Dor. While I would not appreciate such davening, I do understand why some people need it.
ReplyDeleteIf my son would want to go I would go with him.
The same people who are upset at this form of tefillah, are they also upset with all the upscale living, simchas, pot smoking?
Let's realize this is being used for kedusha.
And mind you, many of the people who are attending these slichos would not be by another slichos.
Be proud of all the colors and stripes and give chizuk.
When you see them in a regular shul, treat them with honor and respect.
Speak with them on a level that they understand and they will be back in a regular shul.
Yes, playing guitar in shul, should never be the norm. But times are very different now.
Bravo. Thank you.
DeleteWhen the mainstream minyanim drag out their first night 25 minute slichos to 40 minutes, they cause many people to start looking elsewhere. Elsewhere doesn't have the most optimal frum yidden looking to say slichos at all. Concerts is more their style picking up the many weaker folks.. maybe next time hefkervelt can post minyanim that say slichos the first night the normal 20-25 minutes and starts on time without the ravs drasha going into 1am in the morning...
ReplyDeleteI was at one of these minyanim it felt like chodesh adar and half the place did not daven with a minyan on shabbos. Point is it may be the only option for certain folks but the publicizing and attempt to mainstream these concerts bu the media is a churban to the Dor.
