Gov't approves Giyus Law lowers exemption age to 21 for 2 Yrs

Jpost- The cabinet approved a revised IDF Draft Law on Sunday that includes plans to recruit charedim (ultra-Orthodox) into the military and lower the age of exemption to 21 for those who prefer to remain in yeshiva. The lowering of the age will be in effect for two years.

After 24 months, the exemption age will rise to 22 and a year later, it will increase to 23.

Even after the age rises, charedim will be able to complete their service at the age of 21 on condition they join the workforce through a track which provides professional training.

As part of the new law, representatives of the prime minister, defense minister and foreign minister will form a team responsible for evaluating suitable tracks for haredi service in the IDF and in alternative national service. The team will formulate a plan that meets the security, economic and social needs of the country and the haredim by November 2022.

“For decades, the State of Israel has consistently chosen to ‘cut off our own ears in order to punish ourselves.’ In other words, because they were angry that the haredim were not enlisting, they also forced them not to enter the labor market until a late age,” said Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. “Today we are putting an end to this, and opening the gate of work and employment to haredim young people.”

“We are removing the barriers and allowing freedom of choice to tens of thousands of haredi young people, without coercion and without tanks in Bnei Brak,” added Bennett.

“This is the long and right path for the national interest. The integration of haredi society into the employment market is a top priority for all of us. I am personally excited, this is a historic move for the future of Israel.”

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid celebrated the passing of the law: “After years of previous governments failing to pass a recruitment law, now it’s happening. We promised and fulfilled!”

“This important move will be a bridge to the full service outline that I intend to promote in the coming months that will regulate once and for all the issue of service in the State of Israel,” said Defense Minister Benny Gantz in response to the approval of the law.

Finance Minister Avigdor Liberman celebrated the passing of the law as well: “As the first Defense Minister of the State of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, defined it, the purpose of the army is to protect the homeland but also to constitute a ‘melting pot’ that unites all aspects of society. Our decision balances that melting pot with the needs of the economy today that craves another force participating in the world of employment.”

“This is no less than a vision of the end of days on the way to a comprehensive framework that will enable a common service for all the faces of Israeli society, secular and haredi alike, Jews and Arabs alike,” added Liberman.

    2. If all the anti-chareidi people are praising it, you don’t have to know what it says to know that it’s bad.

    1. I WISH my son who isn't so into learning would be forced to stay in Yeshiva until age 21 or 23 to avoid getting drafted but then be able to join the workforce without any issues.

  3. Of course there's a catch NEVER trust the zionim especially reshaim like Lapid and Lieberman
This law is a joke first of all because it is only for 2 years. Secondly it will push people out of yeshivos at a very young age. Remember the foundation of a young couple are the first years learning this law will be tempting for many to leave learning earlier than usual. The goal is to secularize the charedim in a slick way by enticing them away from Torah. The job contingent attached to the law is not practical academically for charedim to start 4 years of degree study for a job. This is all spin while no such law was passed for the arab sector yet they call it shivyon benetel equality in sharing the burden.

The draft law will have financial penalties aimed at yeshivos if quotas are not met to draft enough bochurim to the army.

    1. There always needs to be a boogie man, to keep the Shepselach on the straight and narrow. Right? Your mind must be a very scary place to exist in.

  4. Basically, this is a terrible law.
There are people who need a 'gzeiras giyus' to raise funds and to justify their existence. If there is no gzeira, they can't exist.
Now that people don't have to go to the army any more, there is no more gzeira.

    2. So now it's the government's responsibility to prevent people from going to work. How did they ever learn before there was an army draft?

  6. Not all the young people went to work in Lakewood
All you need is a few Hundred people to work and make a lot of money off everyone else including the people that learn
And than they use that money to build Fancy houses and shopping malls and restaurants
The same is in Monsey and Bnei Brak and Yerushalayim
Where ever you have a large populations there will always be a few or more than a few who are going to create these fancy restaurants and life styles

The solution is like Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel says
Move to small towns with small Kollels and Yeshivos
Or start Start your own Kollels and Yeshivos in small towns away from the big population centers

    1. Or just refuse to work. No work at all.

Fallsburg isn't a good example, because they aren't self-sufficient. FInd a small self-sufficient town and copy it.
