Harav Aharon Feldman Shlita at Agudah Convention: Eretz Hakodesh Joining WZO Violated what Gedolei Torah said A Charedi Jew Should Never Do

Keynote Speech at the virtual Agudah Convention this motzei Shabbos.
See full video and partial transcript below.

"Eretz Hakodesh purports are received  from Gedolei yisroel for its actions. I and many others do not believe this. Eretz Hakodesh has now made it possible for the charedi public to believe that the whole opposition of gedolei yisrael to joining and cooperating with Zionism has been somehow rendered  null and void it has made it possible for a charedi public to believe that reform is a legitimate expression of Judaism.
To be sure Eretz Hakodesh hoped by joining the Zionists to garner funds for Jewish education and to fight the reform in Israel however it should be obvious that money is not a reason for compromising the foundational principles for which we stand. Had eretz hakodesh publicly refused to identify with the Zionism program and  to legitimized the reform it would have done much more for Judaism than the money it hoped to receive

The opposition of gedolei Torah to Herzl's vision was uncompromising from its very beginning the chofetz chaim said he rather lose a majority of the yeshivos than join forces with the Zionist Jewish agencey... Absent the centrality of Torah there is no Jewish people. The gedolim therefore held that "al tischaber larasha" do not join an evildoer applies to  Zionism we are not allowed to join their organization. The position of gedolei yisrael has never changed any definition of Judaism which does not revolve solely around Hashem giving us the Torah at Sinai is fraudulent and we must reject it. Zionism was successful in creating a state and we support the people living in that state and care deeply about their welfare and security and we will do everything in our powers to strengthen theese but never will we  accept the philosophy which led to the state and continues as its underpinning. If charedi Jews are a member of the Knesset this is because they are forced to do so as citizens of a country they must have representation in the governing body in order to protect their interest or else they will be legislated out of existence. However no charedi member of Knesset will say that he has accepted the Zionist ideology. In line with the views of gedolai yisrael

Agudas yisrael issued a statement a few weeks ago deploring statements made by various organization and various newspaper columnists claiming that the ideology  of Zionism  has been accepted by charedi Jews. The reason for this claim was that Eretz Hakodesh an organization comprised of charedi jews recently became a member of the World Zionist Organization. When the membership of Eretz Hakodesh was challenged in a tribunal of the American Zionist movement with a charge  that Eretz Hakodesh is not a truly a Zionist group Eretz Hakodesh defended itself by stating that it believes in the goals of  Zionism as expressed in the Zionist program and that furthermore all the American charedi Jews who voted for it believe in it as well. This program states that Zionism is a national liberation movement of the Jewish people and that the state of Israel is central to the life of the nation. The program ignores the centrality of Torah to the life of the Jewish nation and instead makes a secular state which does not recognize Torah or G-d as its centrality. It is this program which Eretz Hakodesh proclaimed that it had accepted. With this it violated what the chofetz Chaim and Rav Chaim brisker and a century of gedolei torah said that  a charedi Jew should never do. In addition Eretz Hakodesh signed an agreement along with all Zionist reform and conservative movements in the WZO in which all signatories pledged a true partnership to advance our common goals on behalf of the Jewish people and its  state". Eretz Hakodesh has agreed to the allocation of funds which supports the assimilationist and heretical goals of reform and conservative Judaism as long as Eretz Hakodesh too receives its share of the allocation pie. By joining with the reform movement it violates a  stated position of the gedolei hador of America issued  70 years ago prohibiting any identification with  and certain acquiescence to reform movements. Eretz Hakodesh purports are received  from Gedolei yisroel for its actions. All of this stems from a failure by Eretz Hakodesh to have defined for themselves what a charedi Jew is. We are a nation dedicated to serve Hashem by keeping his Torah.

If that definition would have been clear it would have been impossible to label those who believe that Jews are a nation without Torah, as partners. These movements are nothing less than imposters who have appropriated a name Jewish for their movements and we can not sit at the same table with them to address the problems of Jewry. When we lose our definition of who we are we turn into a ethnic group and are threatening our survival as a nation.

  1. The PR campaign last winter to sign up thousands of unsuspecting frum Yidden for eretz hakodesh was a deception that was pushed by a well funded machine and the charedi media is to blame for its roll in pushing one of the biggest breaches of our mesorah. A slap in the face to all the gedoim of yesteryear. They presented lies to Rav Chaim Kanievsky in a carefully orchestrated scheme.

    1. "one of the biggest breaches of our mesorah"

Is using the internet and commenting on a blog not a big breach in mesorah?

    2. 'They' presented lies to Reb Chaim Kaniyevsky. Wow!
Maybe some other group of 'they' presented lies to Reb Aaron Feldman? Or maybe they presented it to you?
The idea that Reb Chaim's opinion is to be casually discounted by every guy with a black hat, because he was 'lied to', as though Reb Chaim isn't as smart as you and can't figure this out, is the first step on the road to Eitz-style anarchy. A system that allows every young bochur the rights to decide for himself how an entire country should be run. A system that says that a Talmid Chochom and an Am Ha'aretz are equal.

You, Mr anonymous 7:11, are a slap in the face of Gedolim of yesteryear. If your opinion is equal to that of Reb Chaim's, then you are the breach.

    3. Rav Aaron Feldman is the one who said that there was no correct presentation made to Rav Chaim Kanievsky and Rav Shmuel Kamenetzky.

    4. So maybe they lied to Rabbi Feldman too?

  2. One of the great Talmidei Chachomim in Lakewod, who belongs himself on the Moetzes, told me that he signed up and voted. He knows Eretz Yisroel at least as well as the American Kanoim, and he is no less religious than them.

    1. interesting why don't they state so publicly. Rav Shmuel kamentsky did not sign his name or issue any public letter supporting eretz hakodesh, Rav Chaim Kanievsky did not either and Rav Aaron Feldman who is on the moetzes said publicly he does not know of any gedolim that support it. He also said that Rav Chaim Kanievsky was not given the true facts from those who claimed that he said you can vote for the eretz hakodesh slate. More so, Rav Chaim was not made aware that his shver Rav Elyashiv wrote a public letter against joining the WZO as recently as10 years ago 2 years before he was niftar. Rav Elya Brudny also has backed away from any statements in support of it. which Rav is big enough to take on a century of gedolei yisroel who set a precedent against joining.

  3. This seems like a brouhaha about nothing. There is some dusty statement, that nobody cares about, and everything is based on that. There are real issues to deal with, real problems and real people. We have better uses for our lives.

  4. He talks about the two members of the Moetzes who passed away, he missed the third one. What about Reb Chaim Dov Keller zt"l?

  5. Rabbi keller ztvk"l was not a member of the moetzes.

  7. Agudah did not nmention anything of this speech in a article recapping the convention. It left out the substance of the attack on Wzo/Eretz Hakodesh
Well supposedly a delegate for Eretz Hakodesh writes for agudah abd left it out

  8. And then Aguda unashamedly has a Mishpacha editor moderating their conference!
Mishpacha is responsible or at least back all the pirtzos of this dor especially in EY, in their stealthy creep to change the face of Torah Jewry.
Instead of throwing off these unwanted aputropsim they give a hechsher to the chazir.
    Mfarchos zu es zu!

  9. Rav A Feldman declared that had he been aware prior of the junk Kalisch as legislator told the Chicago media he would have refused to appear on the Roundtable

  10. We should be careful when talking about Gedolim but it sounds like he has no idea what actually goes on in the Kenesset every day with the frum parties

Who is the source of this statement? Under what context and conditions did the CC say it? I'm not claiming the CC didn't oppose Zionism but in Dugma L'Abba his son (Reb Leib) writes that the CC celebrated the Balfour Declaration.
