Winter storm watches have been issued for most of New Jersey for a major snowstorm this weekend with increasing chances of snow totals topping 10 inches, forecasters say.
NWS has issued a winter storm watch for the entire forecast region for late Saturday night through Monday afternoon for heavy snow potential of 6 to 12 inches with some snow accumulations over 12 inches possible.
Confidence continues to increase in a major winter storm impacting the region Saturday night through early Monday afternoon. Major impacts from accumulating snow are likely areawide. Snow may mix with or change to sleet or freezing rain across portions of SE PA, S NJ, Sunday. This may hinder snow totals some, but significant impacts are expected nonetheless Snow is still the favored outcome, especially inland, but coastal areas need monitoring in case warmer air sneaks in later and changes precipitation type.
Preliminary forecasts show 8-16 inches of snow can be expected for much of the region, including New York City, the Hudson Valley, nearly all of New Jersey and into Connecticut. Areas along the coast may see slightly lower totals, as could eastern parts of Long Island and much of the Jersey Shore. per NBC
While the weather service has not issued a snowfall forecast map with specific amounts, the watches were issued because there’s now a more than 90% chance at least 5 to 6 inches of snow.
