Bais Medrash Govoha Appoints Rav Reuven Hechster as Mashgiach

Rav Reuven Hechster shlita, the mashgiach of Yeshivas Mir Brachfeld in Modiin Illit, has been named as mashgiach at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood, NJ.

The appointment comes nearly two years after the passing of the longtime Lakewood mashgiach, Rav Mattisyahu Salomon zt”l.

Rav Hechster, a close talmid of his revered rebbi, Rav Nosson Meir Wachtfogel zt”l, mashgiach of Bais Medrash Govoah, will assume the new role while continuing his position in Mir Brachfeld.

According to details that have emerged, Rav Hechster was recently approached with the proposal to take on the Lakewood post and sought guidance from Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch before reaching a decision. Delegations from Modiin Illit appealed for him to remain, citing the many mussar talks and vaadim he delivers in the city, while representatives from Lakewood urged him to come and serve the yeshiva as its mashgiach.

Following consultations with Rav Hirsch, it was decided that Rav Hechster would divide his time between the two mosdos. Under the agreed arrangement, Rav Hechster will spend approximately 20 days each month in Modiin Illit at Mir Brachfeld and 10 days in Lakewood. He is expected to travel to the United States on Sundays following his free Shabbos in Mir Brachfeld to fulfill his responsibilities in Lakewood.

Rav Hechster is widely regarded in the Torah world as a central address for guidance and chizuk, with thousands of avreichim seeking his counsel. In Modiin Illit in particular, he is viewed as a trusted source of direction and inspiration. He was originally appointed as mashgiach of Mir Brachfeld by the late rosh yeshiva, Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel zt”l.

Following the decision of Rav Hirsch, the appointment is set to take effect in approximately a week and a half.

Rav Hechster is expected to arrive at Bais Medrash Govoha in Lakewood during the week of Parshas Yisro, when he will formally begin his role as mashgiach at the yeshiva.

  2. Is there a reason why the yeshiva did not want to choose a full time mashgiach?

    1. Its the new age. Something called airplanes. You can finish your shmuz in Brachfeld at 10pm and give the same one in Lakewood at 10am next morning after shachris and breakfast.

    1. Many years ago when Rav Nosson Vachtfogel was visiting in Eretz Yisroel he heard a smuz from R"NV . He decided he wants to be a Talmid and moved to the USA. He lived in Lakewood for the next twenty years (until R"NV was niftar) I'm sure he picked up English during that twenty year period.

    3. Rav Nosson Wachtfogel attended YU predecessor school.
He grew up in Canada, came to NY to RIETS, then joined his fellow RIETS talmidim Rav Gifter and Rav Avigdor Miller travelling to Slabodka

    4. He actually traveled before the other aforementioned names, together with the iconic Rabbi Yehuda Davis.

His attendance there together with quite a few other distinguished REITs fellow students who are less well remembered today. Fact is they chose to leave because they were unsatisfied even then with Yeshiva college.
P.s. Except as an opportunity to broadcast your insidious propaganda how in any fashion is it relevant?

    6. That was relatively a minor problem. A significant percentage of the student body were quite deficient in their religious Outlook. And R. Bernard Revels rabbinic goals and style didn't fit with the better part of that student body

    3. Instead of the yeshiva conforming to you perhaps try to conform to the yeshiva And maybe realize that there is some logic behind the madness since a great bulk of our tradition is in Yiddish... A lot gets lost in translation

    1. We all know that Rav Matisyahu was more effective because of his eloquence in both Yiddish and English, especially the latter.
