Fierce snow, ice storm heads toward New Jersey. Snowfall forecasts shift as ice threat rises.
With snow falling at a heavy rate and some wind blowing the snow, drivers could face whiteout conditions at times, forecasters noted.
In addition, officials are worried about the potential for heavy icing on trees and power lines, which could spark isolated power outages.
The weather service is expecting about 8 to 14 inches of snow across most of northern New Jersey, 6 to 12 inches of snow and sleet in many parts of central New Jersey, 6 to 8 inches of snow and sleet across much of South Jersey, and 4 to 6 inches of snow and sleet in the far southern counties of Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland.
For Monmouth, Ocean counties - Winter storm warning from 2 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday. Heavy snow with mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 6 to 10 inches and ice accumulations about one-tenth of an inch. Ice accumulation on power lines and tree limbs may cause tree damage and power outages.

“Snow begins after midnight tonight, with the heaviest snow occurring daytime Sunday into Sunday evening (1-2 inches per hour rates likely),” the weather service said. “The storm winds down into Monday morning, with very cold conditions through the week.”
