Media Coverage In First Wave of Covid tied to Vaccine Rates in Lakewood

Discussing the vaccination rates in Lakewood theres no mention of the 50,000 kids who are not eligible for the vaccine or the natural immunity factor but a attempt to explain the lower vaccination rates on anger with the media coverage.

Nj spotlight: Nearly half of Lakewood’s adult residents have received at least one shot, according to the latest data from the state Department of Health, but the township still has the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rate among New Jersey communities of 10,000 or more. While Lakewood is somewhat unique — it has a large Orthodox Jewish population, many of whom claim to have immunity after contracting COVID-19

Coles, the Lakewood mayor, said there is a sense of frustration in his town about how the Ocean County enclave has been the subject of regular media attention during the pandemic. At the start of the virus’ second wave in New Jersey, in October, COVID-19 cases were spiking

in Lakewood, and state officials raised concerns that the infection was spreading amid the large families and religious gatherings that are central in the community’s culture.

“There’s still an awful lot of anger in the Orthodox community about the stories that targeted them early on in the pandemic,” Coles said. Despite that, efforts continue to encourage more of Lakewood’s diverse residents to get vaccinated.

“It’s a work in progress,” Coles said, but with the persistent spread of the virus and the emergence of new variants, “there’s a sense of urgency in the community.”

  1. Let's whine about the media coverage, instead of actually encouraging vaccination.

    1. Sheifeleh, stop being such a self-hater. Most of this town already had covid, a factor that's being totally ignored by the media/medical industry. And also, sheifeleh, no matter how many people vaccinate there will still be only negative coverage of our community, sheifeleh.

  2. The article literally caveats the infographic with "percentage of *adults* vaccinated" and repeatedly says, 'adults over 18'

Yes, the 50,000 children are being accounted for.

    1. They single out Lakewood as a large city because of the thousands of children included in the population but the adult population is half of that, if you take out the kids Lakewood would not be a stat

    2. Imagine if the 50000 would be able to vaccinate

    3. Do you not know how percentages work???

'percentage of *adults* vaccinated' literally does not take any children into account, no matter if there 10, 10,000 or 100,000. The statistic is for the adult population only.

  4. Ray Coles should look in the mirror for the statements he made about the orthodox community. Blaming them for following Trump and not adhering to social distancing he took mo leadership when the pandemic hit even when a resident warned the committee that covid was coming before purim of last year they did nothing and took no preventive or proactive action.

  5. If you don't listen/watch news, then it makes no difference. Let them say what they want.
Unfortunately there are still those that believe the reason for the hate is our own doing, and don't realize that they hate us regardless, just looking for a rational reason for it.

  8. john hopkins university did a big study that showed that if you had the virus then no need to vaccinate. in israel now , the vaccinated are getting the new variant, but not those who had the virus ( 40% of new cases are vaccinated but only 1% already had virus) these are facts. anxious politicians and unions dont make the facts.
