  1. One street is closed, Williams Street. And traffic is unbearable. At all times of the day, Route 9 is full, Central is packed and Prospect is bumper to bumper.
This is a wonderful lesson to us. If the closure of one street causes such damage, how much more benefit we will have if more streets open. Imagine the planning board allowed the same amount of new construction as now, but forbade any new cul-de-sacs. All roads and developments need to have an entrance on one road and an exit on another road. The traffic level on all main arteries would be so much lowered, and the quality of life of almost all of us will be improved. Imagine they opened Arlington to Cedarbridge! A third of the traffic on MLK and Pine Street would be eliminated. Yes, the Arlington children wouldn't be able to play on the street. But why should they have that right, while stuffing up MLk with their cars? And children on the street are a recipe for disaster even on a cul-de-sac.

Make this simple message clear. Even if building won't stop, we can stop the dead end roads. No more blocked off developments, all must open on both sides. Let there be space for all of us on the roads.

    1. The members of the planning board are appointed to be Yes-men for the developers. It cannot be more blatantly clear that overcrowding and traffic is of no concern to them.

    2. There are other pple on arlington besides the cul de sac. Our kids don't play in the street and its scary. Cars zoom down the narrow street and this is without the street being opened to Pine. There are also cars parked on both sides of the street and its not made for constant traffic and cars.

    3. How will the developers lose? They will still build houses, demand isn't going away. The houses will just be normal houses on normal streets, like we all grew up on. In Lakewood, Brooklyn, Monsey, Cleveland, Toronto, LA, Yerushalayim and Antwerp. There is no need for cul-de-sacs.

    4. Anon 9:15 - you can change the parking rules. There is no reason that Arlington should be treated differently to MLK. If you use MLK, you should allow others to use Arlington.
That is just one example. People complain about traffic, but are not willing to give up anything for it. And then they complain about developers. Developers are the same as you, they want their benefit, ignoring everybody else. So do you.

    5. how will developers lose? They will still build houses..

For each house they build on an ordinary street, they need to buy the property of a previous house. There are zoning laws to which the neighbors will have a say. Instead, they buy large swaths of undeveloped property for cheap, and proceed to build many houses on them - without contributing and building the necessary roads that the people buying those houses will now need.

The reason that property is cheap, is because you can't just build a house for yourself in middle of the forest, as you'll need roads to get there.

  3. Why can't they do it on Shabbos? The workers are not Jewish, and nobody is driving there. And the kids will be entertained so the parents can nap.
