Memo on Meeting with Rabbi Aaron Kotler: Rabbi Jakabovits and myself in
Lakewood, October 15, 1962.
We appeared in the Succah of Rabbi Kotler at 12:30 P.M. He immediately proceeded
inte a "Shiar" on the laws of Eruv for about one hour. He would not allow us to
interrupt him and divert him from his dissertation. He was anxious to prove in
every way the fact that there was a wks prohibition on the Huv, in fact a
"safek d'oraita." Upon questioning, he admitted that he barely glimpsed at all pny
the literature printed in "Noam" and the other writings of Rabbi Kakher, As a
matter of fact, his conclusions were almost exclusively based upon a reading of the
polemics between the "Mishkenot Yaakov" and the "Beth Ephraim." See full memo Here

Erev Sukkos Vs Erev Pesach?
There's a famous saying if Men had to clean for Pesach and ladies had to build a sukkah they woukd both start on Erev Pesach.
Talk about Erev Pesach the pressure of getting ready for the Seder, making sure there is no chometz, turning over the kitchen, cooking the zeroa, making charoses etc. Men usually have easy chores when it comes to Erev Pesach its the Nashim tzidkaniyos that are the ones knocked out when we sit by the seder.
Its on Erev Sukkos when rolls are reversed that the men get to feel a bit what it is for the women on Erev Pesach. Talk about the stress of getting the sukkah up, making sure its sturdy, adding 2 new panels, last minute runs to the
local hardware store- a screw and bolt here, a light fixture, oops need to run back for an adapter since its 3 prongs, Setting the shabbos clock, putting up the decorations. Then its back to the store for another 6x4 mat for the schach and a fold-able cot for the son in law who sleeps in the sukkah.
Then comes the Daled minim, checking the esrog one more time, placing it in the polished Esrog holder (Ladies job ) running out to get Aravos, a chinuch set, and of course putting it all together keeping it moist and ready to use. Oh, forgot the Lulav rings.. How do you make them?
Finally on the way to shul a voice yells.. you forget to open the shlock!!

ReplyDeletenew? for whom?
DeleteThe chutzpah of those who went to speak to Reb Aaron, as well as their total inability to understand what he was saying, is just unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteLamm was a talmid chacham of note and probably understood it. Let's see you write a 600 page book on r chaim volzhiner, explaining all his shitos and hashkafos in clear English
DeleteLamm always, always, had an axe to grind. Btw Anybody with enough of a self serving agenda can manage to publish anything! & btw he & myself are even distantly related!
DeleteYou have to comprehend that this was before the days of the "Maran" Reb aharon did not have a chatzer and mashbaks And it was perfectly okay to have a down-to-earth conversation and argue it was expected and respected . Today it's a no-no but these conversations nonetheless might not happen in public but rather it's the mashbak who has these conversations with the maran....
DeleteAnd secondly what's good for the goose is good for the gander it's hilarious to think that in Lakewood today we all disrespect his position and have eruvim without proper supervision and without clear boundaries for the most part people are carrying all over without realizing if they are in or out of the eruvim or if they have been checked in the recent past shame on us
The commenters here didn't read what Lamm said.
DeleteHe didn't disagree halachically. He didn't explain why he holds the halacha to be different. He tried to push Reb Aaron to make compromises on matters Reb Aaron believed to be halacha, using college style arguments. That's why he didn't understand what Reb Aaron said, even if some commenters think that level of knowledge makes him a Talmid Chacham. The 'note' of which he was a Talmid Chacham may not resonate with people who actually learned. 600 page books are not the yardstick of a Talmid Chacham. Especially when the topic is not halacha.
Making Eruvin in Lakewood has nothing to do with the matter at hand.
Making eruvin in Lakewood does have all to do with the argument ,it just shows that you claim to be true to our tradition but we too have a little agendas and we too like to twist and mangle the true tradition just like he had and maybe he was just a bit too obvious in showing it
DeleteThank you dear leaders for making us sit in traffic
ReplyDeleteThe link for the memo re meeting with R' aron not working. Can you please repost
ReplyDeleteLamm was a שוטה רשע וגס רוח. His chutzpah towards Maran R Aharon is reprehensible. Here’s a link to the memo:

I completely disagree with Norman Lamm's memo. His words were inappropriate and unnecessary.
DeleteAt the same time, I do find that Lakewood has copied Crown Heights to a large extent, deifying Reb Aharon similar to the way Lubavitchers deify the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
eh no, no one says rav ahron is mishiach
DeleteThose who 'deify' Reb Aaron are mostly the BTs who know nothing about any other Yiddishkeit other than that which they saw in Lakewood. People who came from anti-Torah or non-Torah backgrounds and became Yeshivish, spend Ellul learning Mishnas Reb Aaron. Even those who came after he was niftar don't know much more about Torah.
DeleteThose who learned elsewhere too, and were taught with a connection to previous generations, see Reb Aaron as one of the Gedolei Yisroel, and learn his Torah like they learn the Torah of other Gedolei Yisroel. But they have a broader understanding of life, and even understand Reb Aaron better because of that.
No one has deified Rav Aaron. It's not in the fabric of the yeshiva or in the fabric of anything Rav Aaron taught, said or lived.
DeleteThe strawman set up over here is really projecting about those who live about deifying people. That's why we set up certain legacy websites, which are all about one person.
Going after people who merited to do teshuva (didn't we all just beg and plead for it!) is onoas devarim, absolutely abhorrent, impermissible and disgusting.
Why are you deifying Baalei Teshuva?
DeletePretending that BTs are the same as FFBs may make you feel good and relevant in today's woke world. But it does a disservice to the truth. BTs are to be admired for their strength of character and difficult decisions they made. On a personal level, they probably merit greater Gan Eden than many FFBs. But facts don't change that they were, through no fault of their own, brought up without a connection to the larger Torah world, including the historical one and the current one.
On this site, 'mesorah' is something found in story books. IRL, it is something picked up through a connection to talmidei chachamim, elderly people, and understanding minds.
Ashrei chelkam of those who changed their lifestyles.
I think he speaks about Moran Rav Moshe TZL in a very negative light. Disgusting and shame full
ReplyDeleteAgreed. Regarding Reb Aharon he just reports his chutzpah and frustration. Regarding Reb Moshe he implies that that psak was a result of pressure from Reb Aharon. Now that all of the teshuvos have been published it is quite clear that was not the case. If Reb Moshe was paskening out of kavod for Reb Aharon he would have said so. On the contrary, he was quite clear and detailed in his own reasoning and psak.
DeleteIs Bingo still selling wooden panels before Yom Tov? In stock? Tried
ReplyDeleteCalling but no answer.
it is a chillul Hashem to post that link and it should be removed immediately

DeleteLet's not forget the gadlus of the special mothers in this town that are busy with the cooking of so many meals, baking challahs and pastries for in between meals, and buying clothing all the family (especially teenage girls!) for both Yom Tov and weekday winter season. This is after the back-to-school season of uniforms, school shoes, backpacks etc etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteIf you brought your daughter's with you to the shuk, you are a gold medalist in being inconsiderate to your fellow man.shame on you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your sentiment. As one of those who brought my daughter, I apologize too everyone.
DeleteThe pharmacy's shelves are quite full of everything you might need.
DeleteGood idea. Open a pharmacy in the shuk.
DeleteIt is now less than 24 hours to Yom Tov. I am your neighbor.
ReplyDeleteB’H, our sukkah is built.
B’H, my children (many of them) have new clothes for Yom Tov.
B’H, I got a new suit and hat for Pesach, so I am good to go.
B’H, we have several (small) roasts in the fridge ready for Yom Tov.
B’H, my daughter found out last night while shopping that our government benefits card is not working. We probably need to recertify or something. That’s not happening before Yom Tov.
B’H, I bought several bottles of wine l’kavod Yom Tov.
B’H, we will be buying the whole family Arba Minim at the shuk tomorrow, as I simply cannot afford more.
B’H, we will somehow figure out how to pay for our several-thousand-dollar credit card balance, mortgage, and tuition.
Nobody has asked me how I am managing.
Nobody has asked me if I am okay.
Nobody has offered to give me assistance. Not the big organizations, not my Rav, not my neighborhood fund.
Because B’H, nobody knows that I am struggling financially. On the outside I look the same as I always did. I have the same job as I always did, and my wife has taken on a few side tutoring gigs. But my family has doubled in size. My income has not kept up, and now I am drowning.
You are not alone there thousands of middle class families in Lakewood that are in the same boat
DeleteSomething has to give its simply not sustainable not affordable
Reach out to a rav or askan in your shul, there are many campaigns being done for people exactly in your situation
Deleteמי כעמך ישראל
So he needs to kiss toes to now survive. This whole town & lifestyle was supposed to be predicated NOT to be that way.
