It is now less than 24 hours to Yom Tov. I am your neighbor.
B’H, our sukkah is built.
B’H, my children (many of them) have new clothes for Yom Tov.
B’H, I got a new suit and hat for Pesach, so I am good to go.
B’H, my daughter found out last night while shopping that our government benefits card is not working. We probably need to recertify or something. That’s not happening before Yom Tov.
B’H, I bought several bottles of wine l’kavod Yom Tov.
B’H, we will be buying the whole family Arba Minim at the shuk tomorrow, as I simply cannot afford more.
B’H, we will somehow figure out how to pay for our several-thousand-dollar credit card balance, mortgage, and tuition.
Nobody has asked me how I am managing.
Nobody has asked me if I am okay.
Nobody has offered to give me assistance. Not the big organizations, not my Rav, not my neighborhood fund.
Because B’H, nobody knows that I am struggling financially. On the outside I look the same as I always did. I have the same job as I always did, and my wife has taken on a few side tutoring gigs. But my family has doubled in size. My income has not kept up, and now I am drowning
Dear Middle Class
ReplyDeleteI feel you. We are all in the same boat. We are all struggling financially. That guy you met at the Shuk Erev Yom Tov buying daled minim - that was me.
I didn't buy several bottles of wine. I am using grape juice. Much cheaper.
I don't have several steaks for Yom Tov. We're sticking with chicken. Much cheaper.
I did not get a new hat or suit for Yom Tov. My old one will suffice. Saved a few hundred dollars.
My point is.... its possible to manage. Don't look at what others have. They can afford it and we can't. So lets just buy what we can afford.
Now, if you really can't afford basics, please reach out to your Rav. He will help you.
Everyone else will help you if your Rav asks for their help. But your first step is to involve your Rav.
Hatzlocha and Gut Yontif.
I'm not exactly sure of the purpose of discussing those who don't have, for what I understand the husband doesn't work maybe you should get a job. Oh! He is learning so we're not dealing with poverty but Torah. so then the question is we should really be supporting Torah more... and maybe set our tzedaka priorities right and maybe not send the bulk of our funds to EY and if you think there is enough money to go around for everybody why is it not getting to the right people?. On the other hand If they are overspending more than they should be then it shouldn't be anyone else's problem...
DeleteNo way! You got a new suit and hat on pesach and are not getting another one for Sukkos?!
ReplyDeleteI have the same hat I wore to my chasuna 11 years ago (it was not new then either) and am wearing a 5 year old suit. Stop buying so many new things and your credit card bill won't be so high! And if you do buy lots of new things, don't expect the community to step in and bail you out due to your lack of discrection.
Thank you,
Someone who have enough money because he is smart about using it
For the last time in the next twenty years, we will be doing a certain mitzvah for ELEVEN days in a row.
ReplyDeleteGuess what the mitzvah is.
Krias Hatorah
DeleteWhy are you interfering with the public works people who get up early in the morning to wake us up, then they run off to their second job, collecting overblown salary in the early morning.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't they be hiring the homeless to collect the garbage, a completely unskilled job?

DeleteEveryone with EBT needs to change their password! There have recently been new cases of fraud & that may be why your card doesn't work.
ReplyDeleteThe reality is that no one is going to reach out to ask if you are ok because they cannot read your mind. YOU are going to need to reach out for help.
