No, they can't, through no fault of their own. 1925 European style mussar will absolutely not work in 2025 America. You may or not find that unfortunate, but it is simply the metzius. Just like hitting a child no longer works and just causes rebellion. That is a metzius today, that, for the most part, is accepted as such. Perhaps that illustration will help you understand. there is barely a halachic heter for sheitlach in the first place.
