- Thousands attended the “Night Out Against Crime” event yesterday at BlueClaws Stadium in Lakewood. Throughout the evening, police raffled off 40 bicycles. However, organizers ran out of wristbands early in the evening, leaving children who arrived later without raffle tickets.
- Last night, the Lakewood Planning Board approved an application for a new school on Ridge Avenue that will accommodate up to 160 students.
The board also stood by its previous approval of the Bais Reuven kamenitz extension, adopting the resolution despite an attorney’s objection that a neighboring property owner within the 200-foot notice radius did not receive proper notice from the township after purchasing the lot from the developer. The board’s response was essentially that the neighbor is welcome to challenge the approval in court and see whether a judge will overturn the board’s decision.
- Bike shop owners in New Jersey reported a drop in e-bike sales ranging from 20% to 90% since New Jersey’s new restrictive and confusing e-bike law took effect on July 19. NJ.com
- Ohel organization won Camp Lavi’s auction in Lakewood, PA but agreed to let the second-place bidder take over. That bidder backed out before the deal became official, leaving Ohel as the winner. Ohel is now working with parents to find another buyer who will keep the camp operating as it is. EJP
- Giyus: Protesters blocked a main highway outside Bnei Brak in response to the police arresting a bochur and handing him over to IDF military police for draft evasion.

Hefkervelt made a mistake in today's report about the elementary school expansion approved at 831 Ridge Avenue. The school owner's plans show 12 new classrooms with an average of 27 kids per class, which equals an additional 324 kids on top of the over 705 already accommodated in the existing 27 classrooms. They also show a very large Hall-like area which the owner claims he will only use as a second gym & breakfast area.
ReplyDeleteEveryone acknowledged that the developer failed to provide the legally required Notice to the neighboring property owner, though the school's attorney blamed the “innocent mistake” on her paralegal. Despite multiple requests—and explicit citations to the Municipal Land Use Law confirming the neighbor’s right to present expert testimony and cross-examine the school owner's experts—the Board Chairman adamantly refused to allow it. He explained that he did not want to spend any more time on the matter and added, “I don’t care if you go to court to overturn the Board’s decision.”
HV got confused with a different high school application for 160 students a few blocks further down at 1244 Ridge Avenue, which was also approved at last night's meeting.
As far as Kamenitz is concerned, the plan is to grow it to about 1,053 kids and squeeze in a few more if the owner feels it’s necessary. It's too bad for the neighbors but they better learn to live with the hard facts.
Where is the school planning to park the over 20-25 buses it will need to transport over 1000 kids? There's NO WAY their parking lot which is already stuffed with cars can handle more than a few buses?! What was the Board even thinking??
DeleteThere are copycat organizations because it is profitable since EMS organizations can bill insurance companies for hundreds of dollars a call. I don't think municipal authorities have the latitude to deny permits based on arbitrary parameters like addresses. I wonder how many of their EMS actually lived in Jackson.

Mordy is right as pikuach nefesh is not a game and saving lives shouldn’t be risked to stroke Hatzoloh rejects ego. HN has had several publicized mess ups which endangered peoples lives while Hatzoloh has an impeccable safety record and rightfully has very strong communal and rabbinic backing. Those who seek attention can try another field where they won’t take peoples lives in their hands.
