Hesped during Levaye of Horav Reb Yehoshua Safrin zt"l - Komarna Rebbe by Horav Michoel Sorotzkin
A moving hesped delivered during the levayah in Brooklyn on 17 Elul 5786 for Horav Hatzaddik Rav Yehoshua Safrin, zt”l, the Komarna Rebbe of Manhattan.
The Rebbe, zt”l, was a towering talmid chacham, distinguished in both Nigleh and Nistar, a scion of an illustrious geza tarshishim, and a man of exceptionally refined middos. His life was marked by an extraordinary devotion to chesed , a true gomel chasadim whose kindness, generosity, and concern for others knew no bounds.
In this hesped, tribute is paid to a rare synthesis of Torah greatness, avodah, nobility of character, and selfless concern for every Jew ; qualities that made the Komarna Rebbe, zt”l, beloved and revered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
הספד מרגש שנישא ע"י האב מיכאל סורוצקין במהלך מסע ההלוויה בברוקלין, ביום י״ז באלול תשפ״ו, על הגה״צ רבי יהושע סאפרין זצ״ל, האדמו״ר מקאמארנא-מנהטן.
הרבי זצ״ל היה תלמיד חכם מופלג, גדול בתורה בנגלה ובנסתר, נצר לגזע תרשישים, ובעל מידות תרומיות ואצילות נפש נדירה. כל ימיו היו מסכת מופלאה של תורה, עבודה וגמילות חסדים, כאשר לבו וביתו היו פתוחים לכל נצרך, והוא נודע כגומל חסדים שאין שני לו, במסירות, בנדיבות ובדאגה כנה לכל יהודי.
בהספד זה מובעת ההערכה לדמות נדירה ששילבה גדלות בתורה, עומק בעבודת ה׳, אצילות המידות ומסירות ללא גבול לזולת, תכונות שבזכותן היה הרבי מקאמארנא זצ״ל אהוב ונערץ על כל מי שזכה להכירו.

IHaving known Rav Shia Safrin zt”l for many years from the West Side, I felt deeply moved to attend his levayah at Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park.
ReplyDeleteThe kavod shown to him was remarkable. A large and distinguished crowd came from many different circles, reflecting the many people whose lives he had touched over the years.
Rav Shia was a rare combination. He was an outstanding talmid chacham, descended from great Admorim, with an exceptional knowledge of Chassidus. At the same time, in his daily life he was a successful businessman and an extraordinary baal tzedakah who helped people whenever and wherever he could.
He learned from great Litvishe Gedolei Yisrael and was close to leading Admorim, including Lubavitch, Ger and others. Yet perhaps what people remembered most was simply Rav Shia himself. Anyone who came into contact with him, from any background, immediately felt his warmth, his sharp understanding, and above all his compassionate and generous heart.
Several important hespedim were delivered, including one by Rav Yeruchim Olshin, Rosh Yeshiva of Lakewood.
But the hesped that shook the room and touched every heart was delivered by Rav Michoel Sorotzkin.
In only a few minutes, he managed to say everything that needed to be said. It was a lesson in what a true hesped should be. There was no shouting, no attempt to overwhelm the audience with tears, no long quotations from Gemaras and Midrashim, and no complicated mahalach from the podium.
He came to be maspid a great man. He spoke briefly, from the heart, and with a few carefully chosen words he defined who Rav Shis was.
It was one of those hespedim that leaves a mark on a person and is not easily forgotten.
May Rav Shia zt”l be a meilitz yosher for his family, for all those whom he helped and inspired, and for all of Klal Yisrael.
