This project has been in the making since 2016 the NJDOT had several public meetings over the years.
The NJDOT proposal to ease traffic on Rt 9 Through Lakewood calls to eliminate left turning lanes from Rt 9 onto Central avenue and on to Hurley. By doing so it will open an additional lane on Route 9 going north bound which will take away the bottle neck that causes a mile back up at that intersection. Officials noted that these left turning lanes only allow a few cars to turn per cycle of the trffic light. So, If you are coming from 7-11 on rt 9 North you will not be able to turn let onto Central avenue. Your only option is to go from James street to Sunset or to John street to Cedarbridge and back up from Hurley. Same for motorist traveling from Rt 9 South coming from rt 88 you will not have an option to turn left onto Hurley at the gas station you will have to turn left at rt 88 or at John street.
Other key fixes that were planned along route 9 intersection
-Adding wider side walks on southern part of rt 9 for a 1.7 mile stretch
-Intersection of Locust street adding a right turn going to the west onto route 9 North for traffic coming off 70
-Cross and chestnut will be adding additional right turn lane a thru lane and a left lane
-Broadway and chateau will get a traffic signal adding left turn lanes to rt 9
-Oak street and rt 9 will be adding a traffic light
-Prospect street adding right turn lane for rt 9 south bound more space for trucks turning
-James & Pine widening providing two lanes
-Extend the turning lane from rt 9 south to rt 88 first street will be right in right out only.

ReplyDeleteThe local committee has been in power for 25 years, yet they have no control or influence over state and county road decisions that run through Lakewood. It’s like having someone living in your house who does whatever they want without your input or control. It’s time for a changethey’re our representatives, and they haven’t been able to get things done.

ReplyDeleteThis has the potential to minimize the drive of Rt 9 North by 10-15 min, for hundreds of people daily.
The only downside is the elimination of a turning lane, people can turn earlier for Northbound on James or for Southbound on Rt 88.
I think that this is a great thing, an actual solution for the crazy traffic situation in town. Of course widening the 9 would be better but this is good for the reality that the 9 widening will never happen.
People just love to complain!
This can not eliminate the problems you mention. The solution you mention are not feasible either, you probably never traveled that route.

ReplyDeleteI am not looking to criticize, but I don't understand where the cars who wish to go to Cedarbridge will go. Won't they just be moved to Route 88, causing the bottleneck to start there? Will life be improved?
ReplyDeleteIf you think about how many cars have to get from north Lakewood to Cedarbridge park every morning (Cedarbridge is a parking lot during rush hour) and imagine all of those cars trying to make a left turn at the 88 intersection, you will understand what a disaster this is going to cause. The 88 turning lane cannot be extended any longer so cars will inevitably have block the left traffic lane. Bad Idea.
ReplyDeleteI travel south down route 9 everyday at 2 o’clock and actually think this is a good idea. Most people turning left on Central from Route 9 south or left on Hurley from Route 9 north are coming from a place that they would have the opportunity to turn left on james street or left on 88. The only caveat is that they would need to make sure those left turns turning lanes get extended to accommodate the extra traffic and that the turning light has enough time to clear out to new extended lane on each red green turn. Maybe they need to eliminate the left turn onto first street from route nine south and make the whole middle over there a left turning lane onto route 88.

Left turn lane onto Hurley is barely used, was okay.
DeleteAdding a second lane northbound there -those few feet- is not helping much, that was not cause of traffic.
Best thing ever. The left turners onto central from rt 9 always went past the red by a few cars and delayed the cars trying to get off central.
ReplyDeleteOpening a second lane on route 9 north at the light at central is an excellent idea. But it will only help if they open the second lane going north by the 7-eleven, so that twice the amount of cars will get through the light. Yasher koach

So you might be saving some time for some people but creating havoc for everyone else. That's not called fixing a problem, that's putting a bandaid or not even. Maybe putting the problem in an alternate place. The only way to solve the problem is to widen route 9 and stop the building(which should've been done 10 years ago). Good luck to everyone that has to travel this route. It's going to pit more traffic on james on prospect on cedarbridge and even on cross street. Time to move out!!!

DeleteWith all due respect the maximum amount of cars that made those lights was 2 or 3, most of them went thru red! And those tractor trailers that tried to turn onto Hurley were a disaster for central ave traffic.Adding an extra lane to route 9 is a great idea and should help the traffic.

ReplyDeleteCall the Police. They are supposed to deal with roadway obstructions. I dont think drivers should be responsible for letting other drivers know about lane changes. Imagine the scenario " Hey, you cant turn left! Where does it say that, i have been doing this for 25 years?! Look under your car, the arrows were repainted to go straight!"
