The food should be chewed well before swallowing in order for the body to digest it and not have it sit in the stomach. Israel At War Thursday July 31

Israel at war day 664

- Israel is evacuating a large part of the diplomats in the United Arab Emirates

- Palestinian Islamic Jihad released a video of Israeli hostage Rom Braslavski. Rom was abducted from the Nova festival.

- Israel, US now aligning on comprehensive Gaza plan, ‘no more partial deals’

- Hamas tells mediators it won’t resume ceasefire talks until hunger crisis addressed while Witkoff, Huckabee to tour Gaza food distribution sites Friday as US plans to ramp up aid

- Israeli Political source: There is no continuation or expectation of negotiations. We are moving towards the following steps, which are expected to include a massive military operation.

- C14: Drama in the negotiations with Hamas - talks are on the verge of collapse. A political source said a few minutes ago: "Hams has disconnected and is not interested in conducting negotiations. There is no one to talk to on the other side." Another political source says: "Unfortunately, there will be no deal, it seems it's over."

- President Trump: “The fastest way to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is for Hams to surrender release of the hostages!!!”

- Serious incident in the Gaza Strip that could have ended at a heavy price: 12 Hamas terrorists set an ambush near a logistics route; the IDF estimates: they intended to kidnap soldiers. The terrorists waited in ambush while covering themselves with blankets to make identification difficult. IDF forces from the 13th Battalion of the Golani, who spotted them, launched a UAV to the scene - and the terrorists, who spotted the UAV above them, fled back into the nearby shaft without being eliminated.

- Germany calls to immediately start the process of recognizing a Palestinian state

-Senior Hamas official: Recognition of a Palestinian state is a victory.

-27 Democratic senators voted last night in favor of a resolution in the US Senate to prevent the sale of M16 rifles to the Ministry of National Security in Israel. This is the highest number of Democratic senators voting in favor of a resolution to stop arms sales to Israel. In a similar vote in April, only 15 Democratic senators supported stopping arms sales to Israel
The resolution was brought by Bernie Sanders and defeated by 70 senators.

- US President Donald Trump threatened Thursday that Canada’s decision to recognize a Palestinian state could impede ongoing, intensive talks over a US-Canadian trade deal.
“Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh’ Canada!!!” Trump wrote on Thursday, in one of several Truth Social posts on trade.

- Steve Witkoff meets with Netanyahu today
-USA: Sanctions against senior officials in the Palestinian Authority and PLO members. The violations include initiating and supporting actions in international organizations that undermine and contradict previous commitments, including UN Security Council Resolutions 242 and 338, as well as attempts to bring the conflict with Israel to bodies such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Continued support for terrorism – including incitement and glorification of violence (especially in textbooks) – and providing payments and benefits to Palestinian terrorists and their families also constitute serious violations.
The United States has decided to impose sanctions that prevent the issuance of visas to PLO members and senior officials in the Palestinian Authority.

- Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper: Disagreements between Hams and Egyptian senior officials have reached their peak in the last two days, against the backdrop of what Hams describes as an excessive Egyptian media campaign regarding the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip through Egypt. While Cairo claims that it “is investing every possible effort to facilitate the passage of trucks,” Hams claims that many of these trucks are looted and that the number presented in Egyptian media is inaccurate and exaggerated, serving the Israeli narrative that clears it of starving Gaza Strip residents

- Senior Israeli officials: Israel sets an ultimatum for Hamas- either a positive response in the coming days towards an agreement or the start of Gaza perimeter annexation

- Giyus: Rav Yitzchok Yosef shlita launched a public condemnation of the new proposed draft law and the political figures behind it, asserting that the legislation is fundamentally against halachah and lamenting what he described as the betrayal of Torah values by chareidi representatives in the Knesset. He recalled how his father, Rav Ovadia Yosef zt”l, wept over the threat of forced enlistment of bnei Torah
Rav Yosef criticized the heads of the chareidi parties for the understandings reached between the chareidi factions and Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein, warning of dire implications. “Who knows what kind of law will emerge? One of the great rabbanim of our generation told me they want to write into law that all yeshiva students are technically obligated to enlist but receive a deferment. That’s against the Rambam! Will our representatives vote for a law that goes against halachah, against the Rambam?”

-A Story of Hashgacha Pratis – Lakewood, Last Thursday
It was one of those in-between days school was over, but camp hadn't started yet. A Lakewood mother wanted to do something fun with her children, so she decided to take them bowling. When they arrived, however, she was told the entire bowling alley had been rented out by a day camp. Not giving up, she tried another bowling location again, no luck. It too had been rented out to a camp.
She then decided to go boating at the lake, but once there, they were told it was too busy and another camp had taken up all the boats. Feeling a bit defeated, she figured she'd treat the kids to slush and then stop by a toy store to lift their spirits.
Instead of going to a store near her home in the oak and Vine neighborhood, she chose to drive a bit further to the  a Toys  store at  a durther shopping plaza

After leaving the toy store, her young son ran ahead to what he thought was their car to check if his slush had melted but he mistakenly ran to a different vehicle that looked just like theirs.
When the mother caught up to him, she realized he had gone to the wrong car. As she approached the car he had opened, she was shocked to see a small baby inside sweating heavily from the heat. The baby had been accidentally left behind.

The mother immediately called a nearby supermarket to see if anyone recognized the license plate. A short while later, the baby's mother came rushing out. She was beside herself, realizing in horror what had happened, and thanked the woman profusely for saving her child's life. She explained that she always double-checks and takes precautions not to forget a child and usually locks her car too, but somehow, this time she forgot the baby and the car had remained unlocked as well.

In the end, it was clear: what seemed like a day full of frustrating detours and failed plans was really a chain of events orchestrated by Hashgacha Pratis, leading this mother to the right place at the right time to save a child's life.(Kol Mevaser)

- Update from Philadelphia yeshiva on the condition of Maran HaRav Shmuel Kamenetsky shlit”a.

Due to the enormous public interest in the health of the Rosh Yeshiva shlit”a, we would like to provide a more detailed update on his condition and progress.
On Sunday, the doctors informed us that the Rosh Yeshiva was in deep septic shock, and many systems were shutting down. At that time, we were told by the doctors that al pi teva there was virtually zero chance for recovery, the only way would be a miracle.
Sunday, Klal Yisrael held urgent atzeres tefillos  in Yerushalayim, Lakewood, Brooklyn, Toronto, the Catskills, Monsey, Detroit, and many other cities.
Monday morning, to the wonder of the doctors, the Rosh Yeshiva showed slight improvement. The blood pressure rose slightly and his systems began to perform. Over the day, there was slow, incremental progress.
In an update on Monday afternoon, the doctors exclaimed in wonder “nissim, only nissim and tefilla could have done this”. They informed us, that although the Rosh Yeshiva is still in critical condition, while on Sunday the only way was al pi nes, now, there is a potential path for recovery even al pi teva. In the words of the lead doctor “The Rosh Yeshiva is walking a tightrope. Incredibly, he made it halfway across the tightrope, but is still balancing on the tightrope”.
We ask the oilam:
Please continue your tefillos for Shmuel ben Ita Etil.
He has had nissim to reach this point, but is still in critical condition. It is the tefillos of Klal Yisrael which has brought the Rosh Yeshiva to this point, and in the zechus of our tefillos the Rosh Yeshiva will have a refua sheleima iy”H.
Please continue to be מתפלל for שמואל בן איטא עטיל בתוך שאר חולי ישראל as we beseech Hashen לקיים בנו חכמי ישראל

And yes, this is vastly different from the IDF simply capturing territory in the strip. While the military can relinquish any territory it controls, annexing parts of the strip is almost irreversible. Why? According to Israeli law, if the government wants to relinquish territory it has annexed, it has two options: the withdrawal can either be approved by 80 of the Knesset’s 120 members or through a referendum. In 48 hours, the Gaza terror group may finally be forced to decide.

Israel At War Monday July 28

Israel at war day 661

-  In Israel, there is growing concern that Qatar is responsible for Hams' campaign of "Gaza is starving" and is the one behind it. A security source clarified: "The US needs to put a gun on the table and make Qatar choose between Hamas and the US. Only the US has the power to force Hams back into negotiations. If it doesn't do this, the situation will not change."

- Trump issued a stern warning on Monday, making it clear that if Iran attempts to rebuild the nuclear infrastructure that was targeted in last month’s American strikes, he will authorize a new round of attacks.

- Israeli source: If there is no Hamas flexibility - "there will be no choice" but to raise the level of activity and expand the operation in Gaza. It seems there will be no choice but to "try to shake Hamas so that maybe it will present a different response." Although the dialogue with the mediators continues: Hams has not yet shown any flexibility.

- Trump: We know where the hostages are in some cases, we don't want to go precisely to those areas because that means the hostages will be killed

-Trump: Hams does not want to release the remaining hostages now. There are 20 hostages alive. I told Bibi that maybe he should try another way now. A ceasefire is possible - but this must be finished

- J.D. Vance on Gaza: "I don't know if you have all seen these pictures, there are truly heartbreaking cases, there are small children who are starving. Israel must do more to allow aid to enter, and we also need to wage war against Hams so that these people stop preventing food from reaching this area."

- Trump said he is trying to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza: "There are hungry people in Gaza - we are helping them, but other countries also need to help."

- Donald Trump: I told Bibi that maybe he should try a different path now. A ceasefire is possible but we have to end it.

- Israel Defense Minister Katz: "I mean every word - if Hamas does not release the hostages, the gates of hell will open in Gaza"

- Israel Finance Minister and Security cabinet member Smotrich, in a message to his party members tonight: In war, it is not right to make political considerations. The outcome will judge us - the defeat of Hams. We are advancing a good strategic move; it is not advisable to elaborate on it now. Soon, we will know if it succeeds and where we are headed

- Germany says it is prepared to take steps to pressure Israel over the soaring hunger in Gaza, without elaborating.

- Senior Hamas member Khalil al-Hayya, in his speech yesterday, goes out against the Egyptian leadership for the first time, even though it mediates negotiations for a deal and mainly supports Hams’s positions. Al-Hayya addressed the Egyptian people, the Egyptian military leaders, the Egyptian tribes, its religious scholars, and its elected officials, asking them to TAKE ACTION so that their brothers across the border do not die of hunger after the Rafah crossing was closed.

- Barrack Obama: While a lasting resolution to the crisis in Gaza must involve a return of all hostages and a cessation of Israel’s military operations, these articles underscore the immediate need for action to be taken to prevent the travesty of innocent people dying of preventable starvation.

- Netanyahu: 'There is no starvation in Gaza, no policy of starvation in Gaza, and I assure you that we have a commitment to achieve our war goals. We will continue to fight till we achieve the release of our hostages and the destruction of Hamas' military and governing capabilities. They shall be there no more.'

- Egyptian diplomatic sources to the Lebanese newspaper Al-Akhbar: The change in American policy towards the Gaza Strip "has passed the stage of deterrence or reducing Hams’s capabilities" and is moving towards a "more comprehensive approach that redefines the entire war objectives." According to the report, the US has begun promoting in some circles the idea that "the end of the war will only be possible through the establishment of a new reality by force - bypassing the existence of Hams, and establishing a completely different political phase in the Strip."

Speaker Mike Johnson explains how Hamas profits from the food entering the Gaza Strip through the UN: Since the war began, Israel has supplied the Gaza Strip with more than 94,000 food trucks. That is enough food for two million people for two years. They tried to bring it into Gaza, but Hamas stole the food. In 2024, Hamas earned more than $500 million from food that entered as aid and was stolen from people who needed it. That is half of Hamas's budget. This is a broken system. The UN needs to work with Israel to ensure the food reaches those who truly need it.

Haftorah of Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Av 5785

This year's calendar is unique as a year of when erev Pesach falls out on shabbos you have shabbos rosh chodesh Av. The next time isbin 20 years.

The Haftarah for Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Av,  the $64,000 question becomes, what happens when Rosh Chodesh Av falls out on Shabbos? Do we stick with the ‘T’lasa D’Poranusa’or the special Rosh Chodesh haftorah?

Minhag Lakewood Yeshiva Bais Medrash Govoha to read the Hatorah of מסעי which is  שמעו דבר ה' even on shabbos Rosh Chodesh

 Q. Because there is a convergence this Shabbos of Rosh Chodesh with the 2nd Shabbos of the Three Weeks, an interesting question presents itself. Which haftorah should be read? Should it be the haftorah of “Hashamayim Kisi” (Yeshaya 66) which is usually read when Rosh Chodesh falls on Shabbos? On the other hand, should we read “Shimu Dvar Hashem” (Yirmiya 2) which is generally read on the second Shabbos of the Three Weeks because it speaks of the failings of the Jewish community that led to the destruction of the first Bais Hamikdash? Which Haftorah should take precedence?

 A. In truth, both opinions are found in the Rishonim and are cited by the Rema in Shulchan Aruch (OC 425:1). Both customs are firmly entrenched in the tradition of different communities. For example the Magen Avrohom, (425:2) writes that the minhag in the city of Posen was to read “Hashamayim Kisi”, while Rav Yechezkal Landau (Dogul Meirivava) states that the minhag in Prague was to read “Shimu Dvar Hashem”. The Rema writes that those communities that do not have a minhag should read “Hashamayim Kisi” because this is the more dominant opinion of the Rishonim. The Aruch HaShulchan (425:5) rules this way as well.
However, the Vilna Gaon (Beiur Hagra) disagrees. He proves that although Tosfos (Pesachim 40b) writes to read “Hashamayim Kisi”, this is actually a misprint. Many Rishonim cite this Tosfos as their source, and had they known it was a misprint, they too would have agreed to read “Shimu Dvar Hashem”. The Divrei Malkiel (3:27) writes that although in general we read “Hashamayim Kisi” on Rosh Chodesh since it mentions Rosh Chodesh, nonetheless “Shimu Dvar Hashem” is an appropriate alternative because it references Rosh Chodesh as well. Moreover, in this Haftora it is written “B’chadsha Yimtza’ena” (in that month you will be caught), which Chazal interpret to be referring to Chodesh Av, which is also an allusion to Rosh Chodesh.
