Israel News Sunday Dec 21

Day 807

- IDF chief, hinting at potential Iran war, says military will strike ‘wherever required'.

Parents of last remaining hostage say they are hoping for a Chanukah miracle to return his body. The return of Ran "Rani" Gvili's body is the final hurdle before phase two of the peace plan between Hamas and Israel can get under way. But Hamas says it does not know where his remains are. His mother vows to finish off Hamas if he is not returned.

- Israel has released six Gaza prisoners through the Kerem Shalom crossing, as Hamas continues to hold the body of the last Israeli hostage.

- The Israel Defense Forces said Saturday evening that troops had killed two Palestinians who attacked forces in separate incidents in the northern West Bank.

- Lebanese sources report casualties in an Israeli UAV attack on a vehicle in the village of Yater in southern Lebanon a short time ago.

- Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are drafting a proposal to transform Gaza into a futuristic “smart city” known as Project sunrise. A $112‑billion proposal to rebuild the Gaza Strip into a futuristic, high‑tech coastal metropolis after the war contingent on Hamas disarming.

-Senator Lindsey Graham in Israel: "I came here with a goal - we had many achievements in 2025. I want to make sure that 2026 will be a year of peace and of striking the bad guy. My impression is that Hamas is not disarming, it is rearming. My impression is that they are trying to consolidate their control over Gaza, not give it up. And my impression is that Hezbollah is trying to produce more weapons. This is an unacceptable outcome"

- IDF Radio: On the eve of Operation "Rising Lion" about half a year ago, in a conversation between PM Netanyahu and President Trump, President Trump told the PM: "You really want to succeed, because if you fail and they tell me that Bibi is calling me, I'll ask 'Who is Bibi'?

- Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrichast night: "Israel will be forced to launch military operations in Gaza and Lebanon even before the [2026 Israeli] elections."

- Greece is considering sending an engineering force to the Gaza Strip as part of the implementation of President Trump's "Day After" plan for Gaza, and the issue is expected to be raised at a meeting on Monday between PM Netanyahu and the Prime Minister of Greece.

- A report by Kan says Israeli intelligence detected unusual Hamas activity in Gaza on October 6, 2023 less than a day before the October 7 attack through a drone-based operation. Although the intelligence was unclear, it raised concerns and was passed to the IDF Southern Command, which reportedly dismissed it as a routine Hamas training exercise rather than an imminent threat. The operation was not documented in official IDF records and was not included in earlier investigations into the October 7 failures. The report adds to growing scrutiny of intelligence lapses, as the IDF chief of staff has now ordered a review into how repeated warnings about Hamas’s long-term attack plans (“Jericho’s Walls”) were ignored over the years.

- Israeli police arrested three Palestinians in the Bedouin city of Rahat who had entered Israel illegally from Gaza around the time of the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack. The men had lived and worked in Rahat for about two years and were detained after police found stolen military ammunition and a weapons-manufacturing lathe in their possession. They were taken for questioning by the Shin Bet. Authorities did not say whether they were involved in the October 7 attack, nor how they avoided detection for so long.
