In regards to Rav Noach Weinberg's ZT"L understanding:
ReplyDeleteRav Nota Shiller ZT"L - co-founder with Rav Noach Weinberg ZT"L of Chavatzeles Hasharon and Shema Yisroel-Ohr Somayach - made some autobiographical recordings/podcasts where he discusses it at length (obviously it's from his perspective. He put in a lot of effort to accurately portray Rav Noach's ZT"L perspective).
RNW felt that in a time of war and many casualties, you don't have the luxury to properly train each soldier to the highest level. You train him enough to go out there and fight, and to make a difference. He did agree that the highest goal was to be a true talmid chochom and a true Yeshiva Person. Just we didn't have that luxury for most.
