Extreme Heat Watch Issued as Dangerous Heat Coincides With Fast of 17 Tammuz

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Ocean County and surrounding areas from Wednesday afternoon through motzei shabbos, warning that dangerously hot conditions could produce heat index values of up to 110 degrees, with the most intense heat expected Thursday and Friday. Thursday also coincides with the Fast of 17 Tammuz, when many members of the Jewish community will be fasting from 4:20 am until 9: 20pm. Those planning to observe the fast are encouraged to prepare in advance by drinking plenty of fluids before the fast begins, limiting outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and consulting a physician or rabbi if they have health concerns.
